i know it is is controversal but i dont understand why some people feel the entitlement to get money for having children and aibu to think it should stop?

I think that if people want children then they should have them but they should not feel they are entitled for some kind of monetary hand out for having them

I especially feel like getting money for being pregnant like the sure start grant, maternity grant, healthy start vouchers ect should not happen because if you cant afford to have a child why should the goverment pay you to do this? what about the people who do not have any children and choose not to or can not why should they miss out on multiple grants and vouchers when they are paying more and more taxes to support the people who choose to have children and then choose not to work?

  • i have a dd and although i wanted a large family i could not afford to have more than one child so stopped but never claimed any grants ect because i did not want to be paid for being pregnant as it was my choice

Get em to the workhouse

OhDoAdmit · 01/11/2011 21:09

Couldnt we set up some sort of system where people who are poor and have children all live together in a big house? They could do menial work to pay their way and it would probably be better if the men and women were seperated to stop them fornicating. The kids could sleep in dormitories too, this would ensure they didnt get spoilt.

I am just stuck on what we could call these big houses were people would work...

I think some people have children for the money because before some of the allowances were scrapped parents were claiming a lot of money for children and having known the amounts they were entitled to and how much it grew with each child then yes some people did have children because of the money and although you say they are the minority that minority has still cost the tax payer a lot of money and statistically a lot of those children go on to the same enviroment and do not end up as the next generation of taxpayers

I think that if you can not afford children you should wait until you can and if you unexpectedly fall pregnant there should be a system in place to help but it should not be continuous as some people rely on this and do not do anything to get themselves out of that place

I pay into my own pension and i do use the nhs but also have private health insurance
Also my dd's child benefit gets paid into an account which i have never touched and will be given to dd when she turns 18 to use unless it is given to charity before then

Well i am happy to live in a cooperative society wherein children are actually valued and the time and money effort it takes to raise them is acknowledged. I don't like paying taxes for many things, but appreciate that is how this society works for e.g. I don't have a child in Uni, but I appreciate that that child may one day graduate and become higher wage earner and help me with my pension.

I can never understand people who resent money being spent on children, the potential future of our country. What is worng with you? In my opinion not enough money is spent.

And you can kiss goodbye to your money the moment you have a child actually.

Sorry O.P. but you sound rather miserable and should opt out of society if you don't like opting in.

Regrettably I only have two children but desperately wanted a big family. We have never been eligible for a single penny (neither have we needed it). Twenty years ago I might have agreed with you and I do agree that for those who are well educated and who make the right choices there is easily available contraception which is safe and effective and in ideal world those people should not have more children than they can afford.

As I have got older I understand more that life cannot always be planned (I never planned to have five pgs and to have a baby die in my arms), and as my children have got older (teenagers) and more delightful and independent and capable with each passing day (not always but on balance, yes), what an utter blessing children can be. If I could have swapped that tiny boy who died for a life of absolute poverty I would have done it and would do every single day since.

I can see where you are coming from but with 17 years of parenthood under my belt I do think you are being unreasonable. The other side of the coin is that 17 years I genuinely never imagined that DH would become as successful as he has so families can't always plan with absolute certainty either way!!

What is right is an ideal world is not necessarily right in the real world and women will always make mistakes, be disappointed in their choices and in spite of striving to do everything right, illness or the unexpected might drag the rug from them. In those circumstances I don't really understand why the children should suffer.

On balance I think you probably are being unreasonable.

I am wondering - there are always the stories about the single women who have child after child to 'get a better house' and 'more money'. Perhaps if we said that you will get a 2 bed house if you are not working and relying on benefits. Anyone under the age of 18 will go into a hostel where you will be supported and offered training to get a skills. I know mistakes happen but tbh - if I suddenly found that I was expecting (not likely!!) and then expecting again (ooops!) then no one is going to move me into a bigger house. If this rumour about getting bigger houses when you have more and more children and are not working is not true then no harm is done, if it is true and the rules change to a 2 bed house maximum then perhaps people will take some responsibility over their decisions and what they choose to do with them lives

Lol ohdoadmit...

OhDoAdmit · 01/11/2011 21:13

Well now all this free money has been withdrawn shall we see if there is a huge drop in the birth rate?

Come back in five years and let us know.

Marne · 01/11/2011 21:15

I'm thinking i may have to have a couple more, the 2 i have have spaecial needs, chances are if i had more they would also have sn's, just think of all the money i could get!

Being serious now, people do not get payed to have children, they get money towards bringing up their child.
