i know it is is controversal but i dont understand why some people feel the entitlement to get money for having children and aibu to think it should stop?

I think that if people want children then they should have them but they should not feel they are entitled for some kind of monetary hand out for having them

I especially feel like getting money for being pregnant like the sure start grant, maternity grant, healthy start vouchers ect should not happen because if you cant afford to have a child why should the goverment pay you to do this? what about the people who do not have any children and choose not to or can not why should they miss out on multiple grants and vouchers when they are paying more and more taxes to support the people who choose to have children and then choose not to work?

  • i have a dd and although i wanted a large family i could not afford to have more than one child so stopped but never claimed any grants ect because i did not want to be paid for being pregnant as it was my choice

Well I do understand the posters saying "fuck off" and sarcasm, but I also think that the OP has raised some very valid points. Unfortunately, we live in a society where these types of controversial thoughts need to be thrashed out, whether that results in a change or not.

I would recommend watching this for what I thought was a relatively balanced overview of the current problems, if anyone's interested:

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b016ltsh/The_Future_State_of_Welfare_with_John_Humphrys/

I will defend the Welfare State to the end, but I can't pretend it's perfect. And entering into a discourse limited by "fuck off" and sarcastic replies doesn't really do its defense justice.

IMHO.

Yeah, the birth rate was so much lower before we had a welfare state, and is still so much lower in countries in Africa where they don't have a welfare state, isn't it?

Actually having read a few of these posts, I begin thinking we should scrap the army and NHS and pensions and put all the money into teaching remedial logic.

BumWiper · 01/11/2011 21:26

Well bully for you, that you can save your CB.I have four children, one with special needs and health issues so I'm lucky this week,I have ?14 to do me until friday.
Think of all the money they wasted keeping her alive in the neonatal unit. They should have asked for bank statements before deciding whether it was going to be worth it.

Your last post has got me thinking OP.

WTF has happened to the child trust funds??
DD had one and I got a statement a year later to tell me how much it had grown....then nothing??
What's happened to the child trust funds which were issued??

normality · 01/11/2011 21:28

I am glad that some people have seen my point as not a attack on everyone who have claimed anything such as the pension as i believe that the pension should be universally the same for all as it is as long as you have paid tax into it because there is very very little reason you can go 40+ years without having a job

The current system is unworkable people get trapped in using the benefits when they are needed but then get stuck as it is easier and sometimes you are financially better off on benefits than if you had a job

What was said about a tax break seems viable but would not happen as there seems to be a outcry about every benefit that is taken away as if it is a war on families and not as it has been as a focus on resolving debt and the culture of benefits for having children

OP posts:
tethersend · 01/11/2011 21:28

Anyone thought of what we can do with these so-called 'children' who wantonly get born willy-nilly?

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 01/11/2011 21:28

And I have four children (expecting 5th) - we have enough money to support them although I get DLA for two (is that ok with you because it is a lot of money?) I am quite happy for the large amounts of tax we pay to stave off child poverty etc. Yes there are some pisstakers but the overwhelming majority of people on benefits are not there by choice. Even if their parents are pisstaking fuckwit baby machines those children still need to be fed and clothed.

tooearlymustdache · 01/11/2011 21:29

won't somebody think of the children?

oops, wrong thread Grin

PosiesOfPoison · 01/11/2011 21:29

Child trust find, TRUST fund. Not gift, it's for the children when they're sixteen.

Doublechocchipper is describing what happens where we live in Belgium. Working tax credit just does not exist, housing benefit does not exist, sure start grants do not exist. You know what, the levels of single parents living off the state instead of working is far lower than the UK, people still pay their rent from their salaries or from their unemployment benefits (no £2000 per week houses for unemployed in best parts of Brussels like happens in London for many families in receipt of benefits when most working families cannot afford to live in these same houses). Yes, it's all done on tax breaks, and in fact you are "paid" more in tax breaks for the 3rd child, it actually encourages people to have 3 children, 4th child again brings a further tax break not as big as the 3rd, but these are only available to those who work!!!!!! Far from eliminating child poverty, the UK benefits is encouraging those on benefits to produce another generation of those on benefits. Yes it's a great idea for the state to "pay" for people to have children, but only the way it is done in France, Germany, Belgium etc through the tax system, NOT through the welfare system like in the UK.

nenevomito · 01/11/2011 21:34

Children don't get born willy nilly.

There's definitely willy involved at some point.

Or a turkey baster.

normality · 01/11/2011 21:34

I have never said that all child related benefits need to be scrapped and have said that they should be in place for a short period of time to aid parents in times of need a crisis but there should be a limit and there should be a time constant

There also needs to be a limit of a three bedroom house no matter the size of your family if it is to be paid by housing benefit because if you can not afford the size of your house then you should not be having more children it is that simple

AGAIN I AM NOT SAYING THAT THERE SHOULD NOT BE A SYSTEM IN PLACE TO HELP IN TIMES OF NEED FOR SHORT PERIODS OF TIME BUT IT SHOULD NOT BE CONTINUOUS

I would also like to point out i have not said anything about limiting the nhs as we pay tax to use it and so it should be used

Rocky12 · 01/11/2011 21:35

If the entitlement was a small flat or child benefit was capped at say 2 children, or having a number of children of different ages and sexes didnt entitle you to seperate bedrooms and the like then perhaps we would reduce the number of people relying on benefits to allow them to make their own lifestyle choices. Of course there are some people who find themselves in difficult situations, having SN's children for example. However reducing the entitlement to more and more will I feel make people think more about the decisions they make in life.

Onemorning · 01/11/2011 21:37

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

I think that if people want children then they should have them but they should not feel they are entitled for some kind of monetary hand out for having them

If you believe this, why are you claiming Child Benefit? Or is the only ethical Child Benefit the one that you claim?
