to worry that my child's name is becoming a bit common?

when she was born it was unusual and didn't feature in any top 100 names.

In the last week alone, I have met 3 babies that will be called this name. There will be hundreds of them all over the place. My child will no longer stand out and be unusual and unique.

Obviously there is bugger all I can do about this. It is still a nice name and I generally approve of people using it but it is turning into something a bit common.

Or Maisie, Betsy, Milly.

Whatdoyouthinkthen · 28/10/2011 20:41

ruby, no! :o I'm playing 'guess the name' in my head!

Whatmeworry · 28/10/2011 20:45

Happened to us too - I think it is a truism that when you give your child an unusual name, within weeks there will be a celeb with that name ( I suspect they are doing the same research to get a name that stands out)

Fabby and Mis I have a Jesse too. We've never met another one irl. I like it that way, so Op YANBU. I know you don't have ownership of a name, but if you've taken the time to try and think of something less used, it is annoying when that changes.

My Dd has a very popular name, which although I love, I do regret. We just didn't realise at the time. This year she's in a class with 4 other girls with the same name. She hates it. Particularly as she's tiny for her age, so she's 'little name'. Also it will age her in the future.

So we put a lot of thought into naming Dd2 and Ds in order to avoid this. They don't have stupid names, but at the same time it is possible to give your Dc's nice names that aren't in the top 100.

I don't buy into the 'but if it's unusual they'll have to spell it'. My name and surname are both top ten names and I still have to spell them.

I'd rather my Dc's be correctly identified as themselves because they are the only ones with their names in a class, than them being confused with the other Dc's with the same name.

I hate being sucked in to the whole unusual/common/chavvy/boring debate, but here I am again. Smile

OP is being very mean not telling us the name (convinced it's Ruby) so I'm reporting this thread for cruelity!

Would like to know what name is, again, thought I was being unusual, turns out anohter girl in our street has same name and it is gettign more popular, but so what! Nice to have a name you and child like, which goes with surname and suits them. You really can't tell which names will take on characteristics in later years - when I was young, there was no stigma attached to Sharon and Tracey, I thikn it came about cos of a column by Keith Waterhouse in DM in which he slated two indolent shop assistants with those names, it then becam a more mainstream joke or shorthand for a not very bright, not very classy young lady. Who knows, it could happen to virtually any name - for what its worth, had I had a boy, I wanted those slightly street names, such as Leon, Marlon, etc which I may now have lived to regret.

Appuskidu · 29/10/2011 09:56

Ahh-I've trawled through 6 pages of this and the bloody name hasn't been mentioned!

Are you going to tell us, OP?

hwjm1945 · 29/10/2011 09:58

I started looking through it but couldn't be bothered to carry on so skipped to the end. Who cares?

akaemwahahahafrost · 29/10/2011 09:58

So how do you find out how many kids were given YOUR kids name in a given year then?

akaemwahahahafrost · 29/10/2011 09:59

Love Jesse as well. Not a name I ever considered or even thought of but really like it.

balia · 29/10/2011 10:00

Anyone guessed Freya yet? When I took DS to baby massage class (get me how posh) there were 3 of them. 3! It was dead embarassing, there were only about 8 of us and when we went round the circle doing introductions you could see the Freya mums glowering at each other.

hwjm1945 · 29/10/2011 10:07

For what it is worth, think the most overused and dated names will be
Freya, Megan, Keira, Ellie, Millie and Ella adn Lilly and Ruby and Sophie
But, even if there are 2 in a class of 30, that's not that bad and as they grow up, the ywill mix more with differnet age groups so wil have less likelihood of being in groups dominated by that name. My era was all Karen,Lisa, Claire, Kate etc, no one ever calls their girls these names anymore

ac0rn · 29/10/2011 10:10

is it;
eve
amy
may
sara
???

ageless · 29/10/2011 10:16

why is one holding back on the name?

viewfromawindow · 29/10/2011 10:31

When I was at school in the 70's, out of a class of 20 we had 5 Victorias......! Really fallen out of favour now though.....thanks Posh....

Aislingorla · 29/10/2011 10:42

Ruby is a lovely name, not 'common' , just overused.

seeker · 29/10/2011 10:47

What does over used mean? as I've said before, my dd is called Grace- one of the most popular names going- but we very rarely meet another one.
