to worry that my child's name is becoming a bit common?

when she was born it was unusual and didn't feature in any top 100 names.

In the last week alone, I have met 3 babies that will be called this name. There will be hundreds of them all over the place. My child will no longer stand out and be unusual and unique.

Obviously there is bugger all I can do about this. It is still a nice name and I generally approve of people using it but it is turning into something a bit common.

Oh and if your dd is older and this name is (apologies) trending now it'll take years off her when she's older. She might be grateful for that [hgrin]

AbsolutelyBloodySpiffing · 27/10/2011 12:19

Are you going to tell us the name? [hhmm]

i suppose it must be like being a teacher who meets baaad children with their DCs names. That would be awful.

IIRC you are a midwife cervix? Mabye you could do your part for the name by suggesting to every mum who delivers in the hospital and likes they name that it is indeed a horrible name all the babies you know with the name never sleep/cry all the time? Grin

ZombiesAteYourCervix · 27/10/2011 12:20

good point Jenai.

I called my son Albert which was no 159 last year. Of those 159, two go to his CM Confused

Hopeless trying to predict things!

fifitot · 27/10/2011 12:22

Give us a clue about the name fgs!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/10/2011 12:22

Does it really matter? I'd be sad if a child of mine was only unique and unusual because of their name. No name is really unique anyway. Just remind yourself that you liked the name at the time and you still like it now whether or not 5 or 50 people have it near you. Alternatively, you could move to somewhere where the name is not common.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 27/10/2011 12:22

I might change my name to something that was popular circa 1982, in an attempt to stave off my 40s.

I am in exactly the same position OP, have two DS's with names always in top 10-20 boys names and so far ds1(6) hasn't had a single other child in nursery or school with the same name. DD meanwhile, has a name which didn't feature in top 100 in last ten years, we didn't know any other children or adults with her name (we liked that it had no associations for us), she is at nursery with about 12 other children and two share her name! Ours is the eldest one though so I tell myself the other mums must have overheard me at the park when she was tiny and copied WinkGrin. it's definitely not common though Smile

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/10/2011 12:31

lockets.... I like that name. I've never known anybody with it but I remember reading about a character called "Theo Dane" in 'Ballet Shoes', one of my very favourite books.

loveglove · 27/10/2011 12:37

Put a "La" infront of whatever she's called. That's cool and edgey.

"LaOscarina"

loveglove · 27/10/2011 12:38

LaBattlecat

Hardgoing · 27/10/2011 12:42

I named my dd1 a relatively unusual name because it has a meaning at the time of year she was born. Everyone who hears it says they love it. A book came out with her name in the title, I was convinced it would become ubiquitous. I still don't know of anyone else with this name, eight years later. Not sure what that says except perhaps everyone is lying!

DejaWho · 27/10/2011 12:47

Well even if you're concerned about it -what are you going to realistically be able to do now?

Mine's become a bit of a 20-something mildly chavvy one - fuck all I can do about it really except hope the increased popularity means people might finally learn how to spell it right!

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 27/10/2011 12:50

I'm trying to think of seasonal names now Hardgoing.

Pumpkin? LaPumpkin?

naturalbaby · 27/10/2011 12:51

Yabu for starting a thread in AIBU and not giving enough details....we need to know the name for proper judging of BU.

snowball3 · 27/10/2011 12:52

When at his first primary, my son was the only boy with his name in a school of 465 childrenGrin
We then moved to a tiny school of 57 pupils. There were two others in his class of 12 with the same nameShock

BatmanLovesRobin · 27/10/2011 12:55

Called my eldest what we thought was an uncommon but not stupid name (Jacob). Turned out everyone and their dog was thinking the same way [hgrin]

The second child was named in the same vein, and we have yet to meet another with the same name, even though I'd've thought it more common, iyswim.

Anyhow, it all paled into insignificance when a certain Stephenie Mayer named her two male protagonists the names of my children, and 'Team Jacob' and Team Edward' bags, badges and T -shirts were everywhere. Plus the arrival of Jedward. (Have really outed myself now [hsmile])

You can never win, OP.

coccyx · 27/10/2011 13:01

Having an unusual name does not make your child unique or stand out!

pinkdelight · 27/10/2011 13:01

i HATE these name threads that never reveal what the name is. Why not?? It's the only thing that would make them of any interest at all.

ZombiesAteYourCervix · 27/10/2011 13:06

Far, Far to identifiable so not going to say what it is. sorry.
