to worry that my child's name is becoming a bit common?

when she was born it was unusual and didn't feature in any top 100 names.

In the last week alone, I have met 3 babies that will be called this name. There will be hundreds of them all over the place. My child will no longer stand out and be unusual and unique.

Obviously there is bugger all I can do about this. It is still a nice name and I generally approve of people using it but it is turning into something a bit common.

I thought it was getting a bit common? Can't have it both ways, surely?

pinkdelight · 27/10/2011 13:09

And what's the big deal if it's identifiable anyway? It's no big controversy here

ZombiesAteYourCervix · 27/10/2011 13:10

I can be an utter twat here but don't particularly want to be one in real life. that's why.

YABU but i have to admit i feel the same when i hear another child with my dd's name.

ZombiesAteYourCervix · 27/10/2011 13:10

andit is common for those born after 2005 not for those born in 199something.

Speaking as someone with a not very common name I can say that having an unusual name caused me great problems as a child and I can never understand why parents do this to their children.

I gave all my 4 children nice common names and am very happy I did!

oohlaalaa · 27/10/2011 13:14

ZombiesAteYourCerviz - could we at least have clues to try and guess it?

BatmanLovesRobin - I have a friend who has an Isabella and Edward (Teddy). Their children were born pre Twilight. She'd had Isabella as her daughter's name since a teenager, and her husband picked Edward.

AbsolutelyBloodySpiffing · 27/10/2011 13:14

Did you just start this thread for attention then cervix? You clearly had no intention of revealing the name but you're revelling in your contrived bashfulness.

ZombiesAteYourCervix · 27/10/2011 13:17

I did Abs. I told you, I'm bored and it's about time I had some attention.

Im similar my first sons name is verrry popular but I like that my second sons name isnt.

But then I read an article in the Wail about the top 10 most popular names and that two particular boys names which were unusual are now becomong more popular. I didnt think Id be bothered especially sincs ds1's name is SO popular but I was. It irked me. Its Jenson for anyone who gives a hoot.

Deflatedballoonbelly · 27/10/2011 13:18

You are so not going to tell us OP, are you?

Go and do what you are avoiding. The come back and tell us the name cos you feel heaps better

pinkdelight · 27/10/2011 13:18

But you're not being an utter twat. It's a mild debate about a name. And we don't even know the name, so how far can it go?

FWIW I agree with glasscompletelybroken. I was the only person with my name all the time I was growing up and it was embarrassing, esp back then when people tended to be less wacky. I don't think children want to be that unusual.

wompoopigeon · 27/10/2011 13:21

Oh cervix you are teasing us by not revealing the name.

pinkdelight · 27/10/2011 13:22

Thanks for the reveal WhiteTrash - much appreciated! And makes me think that part of what irked you must be the idea that you thought you'd had an original thought, then you find out that actually it's 'in the air' and others have had the same thought. But I think that's a nice thing - shows we're all more connected. Plus the fact that it's a famous person's name, a hero to some people, was bound to boost its popularity, no? Is that the case with your Top Secret name too, Zombie?

DrunkenDaisy · 27/10/2011 13:23

I bet she's called:

Ruby
Lily
Iris

ViviPru · 27/10/2011 13:24

dying to know Hardgoing's DD1's name. As for the OP's kids name - not so much.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 27/10/2011 13:39

I think YANBU as I am in the same boat. Willing to out myself though. Dd is Pippa picked the name well over a year ago and have spent everyday since the royal wedding cursing Pippa Middleton.

LeBOOOf · 27/10/2011 13:39

This happens to everyone- we are all picking up on subtle cultural cues, and unless you choose a name that you actively dislike, the chances are that you are part of a trend (even if you are at the start of it) which will see the name become more common.

BatmanLovesRobin · 27/10/2011 13:40

oohlaalaa - at least someone shares my pain Grin
