to worry that my child's name is becoming a bit common?

when she was born it was unusual and didn't feature in any top 100 names.

In the last week alone, I have met 3 babies that will be called this name. There will be hundreds of them all over the place. My child will no longer stand out and be unusual and unique.

Obviously there is bugger all I can do about this. It is still a nice name and I generally approve of people using it but it is turning into something a bit common.

Cassius is a great name.

marriedinwhite · 28/10/2011 18:34

Lockets - let's hope he never comes across a Caesar then!

FabbyChic · 28/10/2011 18:42

My son is 18 and during his school time no one had the same name, even at Uni no one has the same name, in fact I've never heard any child called it, albeit there is an actor with the same name and a famous cowboy.

Feminine · 28/10/2011 18:42

My eldest had an unusual name...now it is not though.

My younger son has an very very unusual name ...I doubt I will ever meet another Wink

My daughters name is rare too , well the combination is! Grin

TheFoosa · 28/10/2011 18:43

Mishushed · 28/10/2011 18:46

My son has an unusual name and ,boy, are we glad we called him it, cos when he started school (14 years ago) he encountered 5 Matthews, 3 Daniels, some Sams, lots of Hannahs, Emilys and Rebeccas. Lovely names but way,way too overused.
OP, please tell us your DD's name.

shineynewthings · 28/10/2011 19:19

If you want a name that's unusual you have to choose something that is considered culturally not nice sounding or taboo:

Gertrude, morag, pussy, fanny,....

I bet the name is Amelie.

Or LaRumpelstiltskina ;)

FabbyChic · 28/10/2011 19:22

Mis, I love the name he doesn't so much, it was his dad's choice.

effingwotnots · 28/10/2011 19:25

5 pages I've read and I still don't know the blummin name!!

shineynewthings · 28/10/2011 19:28

Celebrities know how to do this: Just pick something society considers utter tosh and then you end up with something completely shit unusual like Heavenly Hirrani Tigerlilly, Apple, Brooklyn, Sunday Rose, or Harper Seven etc etc.

Next time take a leaf out of their bookWink

Aislingorla · 28/10/2011 19:49

OP, please tell us your DD's name, if it's become common it won't out you.
Come on, come on......

NosfeRaahhtu · 28/10/2011 20:07

Do you mean common as in 'as muck' i.e chavvy or common as in popular, i.e there happen to be a lot of them, but it is a nice name? There is a HUGE differenceGrin

usingapseudonym · 28/10/2011 20:12

Definitely NosfeRaahtu. I posts saying "i've never met another xyz apart from mine" quite amusing. There's a good reason for that! I like traditional names that have been given over the last few generations and are well known/ known how to spell but not the chavvy ones. Its hard when they cross over!

NosfeRaahhtu · 28/10/2011 20:14

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid- our DD2 (Philippa/Pippa) is just over 1- fortunately (not something I usually think in relation to where I live), people round here are more swayed by the cast of TOWIE than the Royals.Grin

(And it is a beautiful, lovely name- congrats on your DD!)

catinthestripyhat · 28/10/2011 20:19

I don't understand why people are so desperate for their child to have a "unique" name. I find myself cringing sometimes at the names that people both on here and in RL have chosen in a bid to be "unique" or "out there". I just feel sorry for the child as they are the one that will have to live with it.

Oh and slightly off on a tangent another pet hate of mine is when people do give their kids normal names but then give it an original spelling. Think Alice/Aliss, Jessica/Jesika. Not only do the parents look illiterate but the poor kid has to spell their name to all and sundry for the rest of their life.

And breath!!

I'm guessing Ruby , Violet or Florence.

Whatdoyouthinkthen · 28/10/2011 20:37

I lived the name Amelie but hated the film so didn't go for it.

Whatdoyouthinkthen · 28/10/2011 20:38

Loved not lived
