To use the childrens' coats from last winter again this winter?

Am I? Both of my younger childrens' coats still fit them perfectly well. They were both bought brand new about a year ago from M&S and are in great condition.

My mum says I'm being unreasonable by not buying them new this year. I say there's no point spending £60 or so when they each have a perfectly adequate coat.

yanbu. How ridiculous!

MissBetsyTrotwood · 15/10/2011 17:54

Your mum's being ridiculous. YADNBU.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/10/2011 17:55

Your mum is being ridiculous.

Flissfloss · 15/10/2011 17:55

No of course you're not being unreasonable. Why on earth are you even having to ask?! Since when does being a year older warrant buying a new coat every year (unless of course it doesn't fit) The mind boggles.

fivegomadindorset · 15/10/2011 17:55

Of course you are not, unless she is prepared to fork out for them.

nightshade · 15/10/2011 17:55

absolutely not unreasonable. dd1 has had three seasons out of her winter coat.

worraliberty · 15/10/2011 17:55

You're Mum is right and I think deep down you know she is too

Your children will suffer badly from this selfish attitude you have...maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow....but some day they will.

Hmm
CroissantNeuf · 15/10/2011 17:56

Of course YADNBU!

ChasingSquirrels · 15/10/2011 17:56

ehhh?????
I purposely buy them too big so they fit for three years - too big, just right, bit small :) ok so sometimes the 3rd year doesn't work, but definitely two years.
And then ds2 wears ds1's old coats a few years later.

member · 15/10/2011 17:56

YANBU, if they fit & aren't threadbare then why would you spend another £60 or so. Ask your mum how she'd feel if you asked her to set fire to a wad of cash Wink

ZonkedOut · 15/10/2011 17:56

Of course YANBU. They still fit and are in good condition. Does your Mum buy a new coat for herself every year?

Aislingorla · 15/10/2011 17:56

What a silly question?

sweepitundertherug · 15/10/2011 17:57

YANBU. You mother is though.
My dd had a coat that we said grew with her Grin
It survived 3 years & is still going strong with my nieces.

schobe · 15/10/2011 17:57

Hmm I suppose you can whip out the sewing machine and bring them up to date fashionwise a la Gok.

It does border on child abuse though.

NorfolkBroad · 15/10/2011 17:57

Madness!! Of course you shouldnt buy new ones if the old ones fit!!

valiumredhead · 15/10/2011 17:59

I agree with worra Grin

I am stunned any sane adult would need to ask tbh!

BehindLockNumberNine · 15/10/2011 17:59

Blimey - I buy my dc's coats big so as to get two years out of them!! YADNBU. It would be a waste of money to buy coats when the old ones still fit!

Fixture · 15/10/2011 18:02

Shock YANBU!

PandaG · 15/10/2011 18:02

YANBU. Winter coats should hopefully get at least 2 years out o fthem, and then get passed on down. DSIS still remembers the brown M&S duffle coat that she apparently wore 5 years on the trot - hers first, and then my passed down one.

Jawbreaker · 15/10/2011 18:02

YANBU.

TheOriginalFAB · 15/10/2011 18:03

Why on earth would you replace something that doesn't need it??

Your mum IBU.

No wonder there is so much waste around.

GuillotinedMaryLacey · 15/10/2011 18:05

YANBU at all. DD still fits last year's winter coat. The only reason she might not wear it is because there are two more coats in the beautifully clean and ironed bag of hand me downs from her cousin. But she was wearing it today and I'm sure it'll have its uses.

flowery · 15/10/2011 18:05

YANBU. How strange to buy a new one if the old one still fits. DS1 has a new coat this year after his old one did him two years. DS2 now has the old one.

flowery · 15/10/2011 18:07

My mum wouldn't dream of commenting on whether my boys needed new things or not. None of her business.

Purplegirlie · 15/10/2011 18:07

I didn't think I was being unreasonable BTW. My mum has been going on and on and on about it, so thought I'd ask the jury on here.

Anyway, glad you all agree with me.
