To use the childrens' coats from last winter again this winter?

Purplegirlie · 15/10/2011 17:53

Am I? Both of my younger childrens' coats still fit them perfectly well. They were both bought brand new about a year ago from M&S and are in great condition.

My mum says I'm being unreasonable by not buying them new this year. I say there's no point spending £60 or so when they each have a perfectly adequate coat.

Of course YANBU! How silly.

I try very hard to buy coats that will last two years. Last year ex H bought ds a North Face coat, that I privately thought was far too expensive when he would be out of it soon, he isn't though it fits perfectly this year so he got two years out of it, no way am I wasting money on a new one. Dd got a decent one too that fits right now but will not last the winter. I always try to buy coats to get two years out of them.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 15/10/2011 18:13

Both dc had the same coat for the past two winters (and both were second hand to them) and now dd's fits ds this winter, perfect!

Purplegirlie · 15/10/2011 18:13

I do the two-year thing too, Akaem. Have had 3 years out of some coats with my older DD but the younger 2 seem to grow more quickly than she did at their ages.

YANBU your Mum is being silly. Did she always buy you new every year?

ClaimedByMe · 15/10/2011 18:14

Tell her if it bothers her somuch she can buy them new coats!

I also buy big to get 2 years out of them!

whatdoiknowanyway · 15/10/2011 18:14

My DDs are 2 years apart. Coats lasted 2 years then DD2 often wore her older sister's outgrown one. Also worked beautifully for school uniform and party dresses.
YANBU

I cannot believe some people would think it's acceptable to purchase new coats just because the winter ones to be used are from last year.

It strikes me as sending a really terrible message to your children, and is - quite frankly - scary that some people have this mindset.

I'm from a working class background, so without meaning to offend - is your mum perhaps slightly pretentious in other ways too? Not sure how else to put it, sorry.

Hatwoman · 15/10/2011 18:18

??? like others - can;t believe anyone would buy a new coat (or anything for that matter) when you;ve got a perfectly good one

Sirzy · 15/10/2011 18:19

I have just got a winter coat and all in one for ds. I have got both a size to big in the hope they fit him next winter to! His jacket from last spring will easily fit him into next spring to!

I don't see the point of buying new clothes when not needed!

ohgoditssunday · 15/10/2011 18:20

And just to put my comment about your mum's background - that statement about being working class - I've found (as I've moved into a professional job and mix with a wider variety of upbringings than when I was growing up at my parents' house) that it's only the working class that would do something as utterly bonkers as think it's the "done thing" to replace perfectly good clothing just because it's old.

lovethislife · 15/10/2011 18:20

Sorry I find it very strange that you would post this - what with unemployment figures and people really struggling. I just find it really bizarre tbh??

LydiaWickham · 15/10/2011 18:21

YANBU - your mum is being odd. If the coats fit them now, your DCs wear them now. There's a very real possibility that they'll have a growth spurt this winter, at which point you might have to buy them new coats, which will be even more annoying if you've already bought them new coats.

BTW - this year I have a choice between 3 coats for myself, the long black wool coat I bought 4 years ago, the short blue one I bought last year or the feather filled quilt coat I bought about 10 years ago. Most adults don't throw out their coats at the end of winter and buy new ones the following year, why would you do that for the DCs unless the coats didn't fit?

ohgoditssunday · 15/10/2011 18:23

Most adults don't throw out their coats at the end of winter and buy new ones the following year, why would you do that for the DCs unless the coats didn't fit?

For a misguided attempt at keeping up "appearences" and/or to externally signal your love for the wearers (materialism/confusion on the level of money spent on a person tallying with the amount you love them)?

Neither of which is a good reason, but may explain the OP's mad mum.

begonyabampot · 15/10/2011 18:25

Well my child is on his 3rd winter for the one coat though i'm surprised it still fits well enough. Not rushing out to buy another though we could afford to easily. Other child now has anew coat but his old one still lasted 2 winters.

keepingupwiththejoneses · 15/10/2011 18:28

YADNBU I buy my ds's coat in the sales a year before they need them, ds1 has had his coat he wears now for 3 years and it fits perfectly fine. Tell your mum if she thinks they shohuld have new coats then would she like to buy themHmm. I'm sure she would change her attitude thenWink

begonyabampot · 15/10/2011 18:31

And shock horror they don't always go back to school in September with brand new uniforms as well unless what they were wearing before the hols is too small or has holes in it.

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 15/10/2011 18:31

Your Mum would probably die of heart failure if I told her how old my coat is Grin

She's being really pretentious - ignore ignore ignore

Hulababy · 15/10/2011 18:31

If they still fit of course you should use them again this year!

I deliberately buy DD a coat in the biggest size I can get away with without looking silly so that it will last two winters.

DuchessofMalfi · 15/10/2011 18:33

Both my children are on their second year for their winter coats. Until recently I'd had the same coat for 10 years [hgrin], but I have now replaced it.

Ragwort · 15/10/2011 18:38

Duchess I think I've had my winter coat about 20 years Grin.

Have never bought my DS a winter coat - apart from charity shops or hand me downs - really, really don't understand this attitude towards buying new clothes.

OP - your mother is barking !

Meglet · 15/10/2011 18:39

Yanbu. If it fits and isn't falling apart then it doesn't need replacing.

We always get a year or two out of coats.

EssentialFattyAcid · 15/10/2011 18:41

Why would your mum speak to you like that?
It's up to you how you dress your children and how you spend your money.
Does you rmum like to try to control you?

duckdodgers · 15/10/2011 18:43

What reasons does your Mum give for this peculiar and wasteful notion?

Purplegirlie · 15/10/2011 18:43

She does try a bit, Essential. Re the working class thing, she's not from a working class background but is a very cold, unloving person and always was through my childhood, I think this is why she likes "things" so much.

OP posts:
FellatioNelson · 15/10/2011 18:47

If they still fit and you still like them, then use them. Only a lunatic would think this was unreasonable.
