I love this forum so much , I wrote an entire routine about it . Would you like to see / hear it ?

OP posts:
deviladvocate · 14/10/2011 12:40

hee hee! loved it! Grin

rycooler · 14/10/2011 12:40

Some people take themselves way too seriously.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/10/2011 12:41

Flossie - I wanted to be able to laugh at myself and mumsnet, but as I said, the humour was lazy and relied on the most basic stereotype of a mumsnetter. This wasn't humour about mumsnet, it was humour about a caricature of mumsnet and as such, I think it fell far short of what could have been achieved.

FWIW, I think that there is lots of material on mumsnet for the sharp, observational, intelligent humour I was hoping for, which is why I was disappointed that the OP/Mary didn't try to find any of it.

paddypoopants · 14/10/2011 12:43

I was looking forward to it- but I was disappointed. I agree the stereotypical posh mum on mumsnet thing was just lazy and boring. There are so mnay other things on here to take the piss out of.
It's a bit like how I find Michael McIntyre's material - just a list of obvious observations and he's Huge - so maybe you're on to something.

Hullygully · 14/10/2011 12:43

Not finding something funny because it's sexist, cliched and sterotyped does not equate to taking oneself too seriously.

It simply means that you don't find something funny because it's sexist, cliched and stereotyped.

HTH.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/10/2011 12:44

I think that the objection to comedienne is that, by differentiating between male and female comedy performers, it suggests a difference in standard or quality between comedians and comediennes, coraltoes. And I am sorry you didn't like my C for effort grading, but there's no need to get personal.

Gigondas · 14/10/2011 12:44

Made me laugh

LittleWhiteWereWolf · 14/10/2011 12:45

I didn't find that very funny. It just struck me as false and I couldn't relate to it as a MNetter. Had I never heard of MN it probably would have made me laugh--the OP in question seemed confident and had fairly good timing and delivery. I could imagine she might make me laugh with other routines, but this one was just not funny to me.

LadyEvilEyes · 14/10/2011 12:46

But the stereotypes she's mocking are the exact same ones we mock regularly.
If Mathew Wright had never mocked MN on his show I would never have discovered it.
I looked out of curiosity, and yes these people do exist, but there's so much more to it than that.
Hopefully with that routine, people will come on to the site prepared to laugh at the stereotypes, and stay like I did.

Hullygully · 14/10/2011 12:47

LEE - I am strangely touched by your reasoning.

AgathaCrusty · 14/10/2011 12:49

Disappointing, stereotypical and predictable. Plus, I don't like ranty comedians.

Wonder why the OP hasn't been back to comment on the comments. Could it be because she isn't actually a regular at all? Just indulging in a bit of cheap advertising?

coraltoes · 14/10/2011 12:50

How does specifying the gender suggest a difference in quality? I think you're reading too much into it. But then my first language is one which has feminine and masculine nouns...hmm.

worraliberty · 14/10/2011 12:51

I think the amateur Simon Cowells on this thread are funnier than the OP Grin

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 14/10/2011 12:52

laughter track was very offputting.

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/10/2011 12:53

agree that the laughter seems fixed somehow.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/10/2011 12:53

It's very good, very funny, very populist.

You have a great delivery and fab turn of phrase.

There is nothing wrong with being populist or middle of the road topically.

I'd pay to see you (and I like Michael McIntyre). Frankly, we could all do with a bit more funny in life.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 14/10/2011 12:53

Well, you've all got jobs as judges on Opportunity Knocks. Smile

Kudos to Mary for having the guts to get up there, Stand Up is terrifying! You'll never please everyone. Lots of comedy is terribly cliched & relying on stereotype; Thats why it's funny. As I've said, to appeal to a wide audience a routine about MN has to rely, in part, on stereotype & cliche. This is the comedy! It's not a DM article, the humour is because she's used stereotypes!

BuxomWenchOnAPony · 14/10/2011 12:54

It is a little bit true though, isn't it? Sure, she makes a caricature version of a MumsNetter for us to laugh at and it is all a bit obvious, but it is a bit funny, no? And she does point and laugh at the same things that are pointed and laughed at on here all the time.

I'm touched by so many people jumping to defend MNers against the stereotyping, even though we do it ourselves. It's kind of like how you can slag off your own mother, but woe betided an outsider criticising her!

P.s. In my head it is 'ay-boo', 'yan-boo', 'yah-boo' etc...

ThePopsicleKat · 14/10/2011 12:54

I was the same as you, LadyEvil. After hearing a few too many jokes about MN stereotypes I came to check it out, and found I actually love this website. But, purely as a comedy routine this didn't really make me laugh. It was just lazy 'observations' that have been made a thousand times before, which don't particularly relate to my own experiences of MN so it didn't make me laugh. I didn't get the impression that she'd actually spent much time here.

Personally the "Am I ^beeeeeeeeeeeeing.....unreasonable" grated a bit. That might have been just me though.

rycooler · 14/10/2011 12:55

She must be a M'Netter - she wouldn't know so much about it if she wasn't.

KatieMortician · 14/10/2011 12:56

I didn't like the beginning or the end but I did like the middle. But probably because that was directly taken from this site.

Did you get permission from MN as all content here is copyrighted?

thefirstMrsDeVeerie · 14/10/2011 12:57

I thought it was funny.

But then it wasnt about me

hahaha Grin

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 14/10/2011 12:57

oh, and clearly the OP has never actually taken time to read the boards.

Where's the grapes? where's the bumsex?

It's actually quite funny in that it's joking about the stereotype. Yes, MN has got the smug middle class mummy image for some reason Hmm and it's a piss take of that image and as that, it's quite funny.

But it's clearly nothing like the reality of mumsnet and quite obvious that whoever wrote it doesn't actually read much on here at all.

But, tbh, I just don't feel the rage Grin I don't care who likes or doesn't like mumsnet. I like it, I come here. I don't much care what others think of it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go prepare some olives for Tarquin's lunch...

LindsayWagner · 14/10/2011 12:59

oh lame to the power of fuck, could hv been so much better. Was like when people say 'darling' in a sarky voice to indicate that you've used a long word.

But I liked the delivery of Am I. Being. Unreasonable.

TheScaryJessie · 14/10/2011 12:59

I think the "well, you have a bit of potential" comments are amusing, because. I'm sure I've heard of Mary J Bourke. She's not someone considering a career as a comic.
