To think most people still have a fruit bowl?

My friend doesn't, and I think she's the odd one out.

She keeps her fruit, and chocolate Hmm in the fridge.

My 'fruit bowl' is a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=small+round+wicker+basket&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1146&bih=718&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=zJ3VDvGAsfxY7M:&imgrefurl=www.welldressedtables.co.uk/products/Table_Accessories/Tableware/Wicker_Bread_Basket_Round/1090/&docid=xpPjmsou9r8YmM&w=300&h=300&ei=dnaHTv_zB8y78gOT44A1&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=327&page=2&tbnh=158&tbnw=158&start=15&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:15&tx=66&ty=103" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">wicker basket I got as a freebie full of crappy smellies from Grattan yonks ago when we were poor.

It's not swish by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm fond of it Smile

Although, taking it to the other extreme, I saw a lass on telly a bit ago having a go at her DP because he'd had an apple out of the fruit bowl when he should have got it from the cupboard Hmm

Her fruitbowl was for ornamental purposes only.

I bet she's the kind of person who irons her kegs and socks

Absolutely hate fruit in the fridge (except berries and grapes)

WinterIsComing · 02/10/2011 20:31

This is like the butter-dish thread all over again except we need more links to coveted fish-bowls Grin

crazycatlady · 02/10/2011 20:34

We have a beautiful fruit bowl that was a gift from an old (and very strange) boss of mine. It usually has bananas, pears, apples and lemons in it. Clementines at Christmas.

Melon, berries, grapes and other soft fruit like peaches and plums go in the fridge.

WinterIsComing · 02/10/2011 20:35

Erm, fruit-bowls even.

I don't keep fruit in a fish-bowl.

You definitely can keep bananas in the fridge, just near the top where it's not too cold. If you put them on the bottom shelf they go manky quick but near the top is fine. It keeps them from ripening too quickly and everyone knows a too-yellow banana is disguting [boak]

WinterIsComing · 02/10/2011 20:38

And the thread takes an even better turn depending on which definition of fruit-bowl you are referring to Grin

GreenMonkies · 02/10/2011 20:45

I do, it sits at one end of the dining table (open plan living room/dining room) and is refilled about twice a week.

Chocolate is kept in a cupboard in the kitchen, I hate freezing cold, rock hard chocolate. Yuck Blush

GreenMonkies · 02/10/2011 20:47

Oh, yes, meant to add, bananas are on a hook, but rarely get eaten, I tend to buy them for putting in cakes, and I keep tomatoes in the fruit bowl, not the fridge.

megapixels · 02/10/2011 20:51

We have a cheapy rectangular, plasticky one but we only keep bananas in it (and bread, and workmen's address cards). Other fruit go in the fridge.

I know someone who keeps chocolate in the freezer Confused. Because it's nice to bite into rock hard chocolate. Bloody wierdos out there.

CultureMix · 02/10/2011 20:53

Two bowls here, kept on kitchen counter and DC are free to help themselves. One for bananas plus whatever other fruit needs some ripening e.g. pears or kiwis, and one for the rest. Overflow does end up with the bananas except for grapes which are in the fridge.

My DH hates bananas though, and blanches at the thought of peeling one and handing it to the kids Grin. But he's ok for other fruit to coexist unless the bananas go really overripe.

nagynolonger · 02/10/2011 20:53

I only put bananas and citrus fruit in fruit bowls I keep everything else in the fridge. I know I should put toms in a fruit bowl but I still keep those in the fridge too. I keep melons out until I cut them then they go in the fridge as well.
