To think most people still have a fruit bowl?

My friend doesn't, and I think she's the odd one out.

She keeps her fruit, and chocolate Hmm in the fridge.

My 'fruit bowl' is a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=small+round+wicker+basket&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1146&bih=718&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=zJ3VDvGAsfxY7M:&imgrefurl=www.welldressedtables.co.uk/products/Table_Accessories/Tableware/Wicker_Bread_Basket_Round/1090/&docid=xpPjmsou9r8YmM&w=300&h=300&ei=dnaHTv_zB8y78gOT44A1&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=327&page=2&tbnh=158&tbnw=158&start=15&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:15&tx=66&ty=103" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">wicker basket I got as a freebie full of crappy smellies from Grattan yonks ago when we were poor.

It's not swish by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm fond of it Smile

Although, taking it to the other extreme, I saw a lass on telly a bit ago having a go at her DP because he'd had an apple out of the fruit bowl when he should have got it from the cupboard Hmm

Her fruitbowl was for ornamental purposes only.

I bet she's the kind of person who irons her kegs and socks

Two fruit bowls < competitive > but keep grapes in fridge

whatdoiknowanyway · 02/10/2011 09:54

Two fruit bowls, one shallow bowl made by DC for pears, one banana tree plus tray in fridge for grapes.

Anyone else use wine rack in fridge for storing long veg - leeks, cucumbers, pack of peppers?

fatlazymummy · 02/10/2011 10:04

I have a fruit bowl, it was a bargain from the 99p shop. At the moment it has a few clementines in it. I do put some fruit in the fridge [strawberries eg]. I also put all my vegetables in the fridge, it lasts much longer that way.
We don't really have chocolate in the house other than Christmas and Easter, then it is kept in the fridge.

arabicabean · 02/10/2011 11:21

I have an Alessi fruit bowl for the fruit I want to eat at room temp (the rest is in the fridge).
Chocolate is in kept in their rather lovely chocolate box (Peyrano).

But why don't you like them LF?

Did you have a bad fruitbowl experience as a child?

Have worked out optimum banana keeping strategy. You get one of those yellow banana bags (from the middle England shop beginning with L) Grin. You split your bunch of bananas in two - half on the banana tree from said middle England shop - t'other half in banana bag in fridge, bag tied tightly but not pressing out air. Doubles the shelf life of the extra bananas so you are never left with those spotty mushy ones you have to throw away. Sorted.

PS - I also have a nut bowl Wink

babycham42 · 02/10/2011 13:16

sportsfanatic I have pretty jam jars for nuts...

Selks · 02/10/2011 13:30

Fruitbowl here. Green glass seventies job, very retro, a quid from a charity shop. Currently has some bananas and a couple of lemons in it. (Note to self....use up the lemons!)

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 02/10/2011 13:34

We have a fruitbowl - a big Ikea silver leaf job piled with apples, bananas, kiwis, melon, pineapple and pears. Grapes are in the fridge. My thinking is that if the fruit is on display it's easier to pick at that rather than root about for biscuits.

Pinot · 02/10/2011 14:27

I have a fruit bowl with a banana hanger over the top of it (essential dontchaknow as bananas hasten the ripening of other fruit) and it holds a couple of bags of fruit. The rest gets kept in the larder and moved to the bowl when it gets depleted.

Thrilling, me.

fit2drop · 02/10/2011 14:28

As I said earlier I have the nana hanger and a fruit bowl , HOWEVER I also have a continuing argument with my DH about Grapefruit.
I say fridge he says bowl,
I say he is a philistine.

Oh and I keep canned fruit in the fridge not the larder. Canned fruit is boaky if its warm.

AuntiePickleBottom · 02/10/2011 14:37

I don't all fruit goes into fridge as I like the fruit tO be chilled and it keeps for longer

Thumbwitch · 02/10/2011 14:45

I say grapefruit in the bowl, sorry fit2drop! Grin I keep all citrus fruits out of the fridge, except cut lemons/limes. Mind you, if you're having half a grapefruit for breakfast, then I'd put the other half in the fridge afterwards.

Bearskinwoolies · 02/10/2011 14:48

I have a fruitbowl that sits on the kitchen table, with a banana hanger above it. Apples and plums live in the bowl, bananas (obvs) hang above, and everything else lives in the fridge (but not chocolate, that's just wrong).

Was told by my greengrocer not to keep bananas in the fridge as it turns them prematurely black and squidgy.

Ephiny · 02/10/2011 14:51

We have a fruit bowl, just a big fairly plain glass bowl. I do store apples etc in the fridge in warmer weather as they last longer, but I think fruit usually tastes better at room temperature so I take a few out at a time and put them in the fruit bowl.

Chocolate only goes in the fridge when it's very warm.

doublechocchip · 02/10/2011 15:23

No fruitbowl here, all fruit except bananas are in the fridge. I prefer the taste of chilled fruit and it seems to keep for longer. Oh like his chocolate in the fridge as well although dont agree with that one, makes it too cold and hard to enjoy it properley.

fit2drop · 02/10/2011 19:25

doublechocchip

makes it too cold and hard to enjoy it properley.

Nooooooooooo it makes it last longer as it melts seductively in ya gob! Grin

I put mine in the freezer sometimes , then smash it whilst its still wrapped and suck all the smitherened (I think I just made a word up there ) pieces bit by bit

tis a lovely past time Smile

NinkyNonker · 02/10/2011 20:09

We have a fruit bowl, assumed everyone did. Important papers live under the bowl until they make it upstairs to be filed.

You shouldn't keep bananas in a fridge anyway, and tomatoes, chillies etc live in the bowl too.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 02/10/2011 20:18

I have a big china fruit bowl - it was from The Pier (remember them, with their crazy coloured wine glasses and ethnic tat?) and was a gift. Only certain soft fruit goes in the fridge. Oh, also have a meat-hook for hanging bananas from. Choc is kept in a tin - doesn't it go white and sort of powdery looking in the fridge?

laptopdancer · 02/10/2011 20:22

OMG It didnt even occur to me that people wouldnt have a fruit bowl Shock

Twattingcuntybollocks · 02/10/2011 20:23

We have a fruit bowl which lives in the fridge and a banana stand with a hook that lives on top of the fridge. I like all my fruit cold as do the DD's. It contains apples, a lemon, mineolas, pomegranates, grapes and a punnet of strawberries. Ran out of bananas today though.

Twattingcuntybollocks · 02/10/2011 20:24

Oh and my chocolate is kept in the freezer, fridge cooled chocolate just doesn't cut it for me, and room temperature chocolate makes me want to vomit!
