To think most people still have a fruit bowl?

My friend doesn't, and I think she's the odd one out.

She keeps her fruit, and chocolate Hmm in the fridge.

My 'fruit bowl' is a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=small+round+wicker+basket&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1146&bih=718&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=zJ3VDvGAsfxY7M:&imgrefurl=www.welldressedtables.co.uk/products/Table_Accessories/Tableware/Wicker_Bread_Basket_Round/1090/&docid=xpPjmsou9r8YmM&w=300&h=300&ei=dnaHTv_zB8y78gOT44A1&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=327&page=2&tbnh=158&tbnw=158&start=15&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:15&tx=66&ty=103" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">wicker basket I got as a freebie full of crappy smellies from Grattan yonks ago when we were poor.

It's not swish by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm fond of it Smile

Although, taking it to the other extreme, I saw a lass on telly a bit ago having a go at her DP because he'd had an apple out of the fruit bowl when he should have got it from the cupboard Hmm

Her fruitbowl was for ornamental purposes only.

I bet she's the kind of person who irons her kegs and socks

when I was lacking room in the inside fridge I tried tomato in the fruit bowl and they went mouldy - well one did so I put them in the fridge and chucked something out of the fridge to stand on the side instead Grin

I have a banana hanger , someone told me putting bananas in the fruit bowl was the reason the other fruit was going mouldy so quickly. Something to do with the orange skin reacting to banana skinConfused

Dh actually told me today to not put plums in the fruit bowl as the other fruit was drying them out Hmm

any one else heard of which fruits should not be in bed with certain fruits.

I have a stainless steel basket type fruit bowl with matching banana hanger and utensil holder that gets used for everything but utensils

ivykaty44 · 01/10/2011 22:22

What about those stand things they sell in Lakeland for bananas. Anyone got one of those?

no but are they any good?

ivykaty44 · 01/10/2011 22:22

no you need to treat bananas like mushrooms Wink

ChippingIn · 01/10/2011 22:24

Kerry - yes they can, unless you have a teeny tiny fridge - you just open the door, put them on the shelf and shut the door.

Whether they should or not is an entirely different discussion Grin

Tomatoes - some in the fridge, some on the bench. They would all live on the bench but they go off too quickly.

ChippingIn · 01/10/2011 22:25

My friend has one of those banana hangers and frequently has brown bananas so I don't think they're all that good. Keep them away from avocado unless you want to ripen them quickly.

AgentZigzag · 01/10/2011 22:26

'Dh actually told me today to not put plums in the fruit bowl'

I read that as him telling you not to put his plums in the fruitbowl Grin

I think the 'bed' in the next line confused me.

I have a fruit bowl on my kitchen table which my oldest DS bought me back from one of his first holidays abroad. It currently contains two bananas and a a couple of 'betting shop' biros courtesy of DH.Grin

springydaffs · 01/10/2011 22:30

yep, fruit bowl here. always had a fruit bowl. always wash fruit before it goes in the fruit bowl. chocolate does not touch the sides go in the fridge. I keep some tomatoes in the fridge but I try to keep some out - I love tomatoes but can't stand cold tomatoes, eat them like you'd eat an apple, no taste if they're cold. My dad grows the best tomatoes and Lidl do the second-best tomatoes imo (not that you asked).

Fruit bowl is huge and looks like paperclips glued together so it's holey so the fruit doesn't go off. It was a christmas present from my sister. The one before that was a yellow plastic bowl that looked cheerful but somebody left it on the hob and one side of it was wonky because it melted. The fruit also went off in it all the time because you need holes and the bowl needs to be flat-ish, like a platter.

Meteorite · 01/10/2011 22:33

Yes I have a fruit bowl. Not sure where I'd put the fruit otherwise, there's enough stuff in the fridge already!

ivykaty44 · 01/10/2011 22:36

lidl do the best avacado, and the cheapest. Sainsbos and tescgo avacados are frozen or deep chilled and then they turn to mush inside Hmm

Most of the fruit and veg in lidl is fab if you make sure you eat it the next day (s'why it's cheap, see)

42day · 01/10/2011 22:46

2 fruit bowls here too fruit moves from shopping bag to fridge to bowl no 1 then onwards to bowl no 2 if it needs to be eaten that day or before the others but anyone can help themselves to any fruit from any container whenever.

bonkers20 · 01/10/2011 22:52

bibbitybobbityhat sob. We had one of those but it broke.

We have 2 Ikea glass fruit bows which look like those collars dogs wear to stop them licking stitches. We have a yellow one which used be my Mums in the 80s and we have a beautiful wooden platter thingy for the bananas. We also use an old mixing bowl. So 4 fruit bowls and then then overflow sits on the table. We eat ALOT of fruit! Oh and there's some grapes in the fridge as well.

I hide keep my chocolate in the vegetable drawer in the fridge.

mousymouse · 01/10/2011 22:54

don't have a fruit bowl, have one of those produce drawers in the fridge. keeps it fresh for longer.

banana87 · 01/10/2011 22:55

I have a fruit bowl. Someone made it (it's pottery) for our wedding gift. And I keep my chocolate in the freezer Grin

ivykaty44 · 01/10/2011 22:55

no need to eat fruit and veg from lidl next day - it keeps fine in this house for a week. The irony is often lidl a German supermarket sells mishaped English fruit from 20 miles away whereas sainsbo and tesco sell fruit from abroad which is already old

bonkers20 · 01/10/2011 22:55

So, do I win because we have FOUR?! Or is my husband truly the fruit eating freak I suspected all along?!

cantspel · 01/10/2011 22:57

i have 2 fruit bowls. A posh royal daulton crystal affair given to me by my mil and a wooden one i got in kenya 2o years ago.
Neither has fruit in it. The wooden one sits on the side in the kitchen with keys, loose change, odd pens and other odd bits of crap in it.
The posh one only comes out at christmas when i fill it with quality street/roses.
Fruit lives in the fridge and i dont have to worry about bannanas as no one in the house likes them.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/10/2011 22:58

MY fruit bowl is the worlds best fruit bowl.

It was carved by my grandad from a piece of shipwreck, he was in the navy and that was how he passed his time on the boat.

Funny bugger my grandad, he didnt agree with the war and tossed his medals over the side of a boat, he died when I was about five, got back from his allotment, sat in his favourite chair with his gardening programme on and didnt wake up again. ?Sad

SecretNutellaFix · 01/10/2011 22:59

he sounds amazing, ACT.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/10/2011 23:00

He was cool, he used to sneak me to the shop for lion bars. Wink

OriginalPoster · 01/10/2011 23:00

I have three, bananas, oranges/tangerines, apples. We eat a lot of fruit...
