To think most people still have a fruit bowl?

My friend doesn't, and I think she's the odd one out.

She keeps her fruit, and chocolate Hmm in the fridge.

My 'fruit bowl' is a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=small+round+wicker+basket&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1146&bih=718&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=zJ3VDvGAsfxY7M:&imgrefurl=www.welldressedtables.co.uk/products/Table_Accessories/Tableware/Wicker_Bread_Basket_Round/1090/&docid=xpPjmsou9r8YmM&w=300&h=300&ei=dnaHTv_zB8y78gOT44A1&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=327&page=2&tbnh=158&tbnw=158&start=15&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:15&tx=66&ty=103" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">wicker basket I got as a freebie full of crappy smellies from Grattan yonks ago when we were poor.

It's not swish by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm fond of it Smile

Although, taking it to the other extreme, I saw a lass on telly a bit ago having a go at her DP because he'd had an apple out of the fruit bowl when he should have got it from the cupboard Hmm

Her fruitbowl was for ornamental purposes only.

I bet she's the kind of person who irons her kegs and socks

Cold apples are awful.

Cold chocolate is bliss. There's nothing worse than squidgy chocolate.

I'm not sure I understand ornamental fruit bowls though.

Nigella does that kind of thing. 30 lemons in a bowl. What do you do with 30 lemons once they start to go a bit eeeew?

WinterIsComing · 01/10/2011 22:07

My OLD fruit bowl is full of ipod leads, phone chargers, Kindle charger, camera leads, iPod headphones, HTC leads and all manner of shite which the wire fairy and I have running battles over.

It is my version of the wnaky basket.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/10/2011 22:07

I do however insist that fruit is taken out of the wrapper before going in my fruitbowl.

DH drives me mad for putting apples in there still in the thin plastic bag. Grrrr.

ivykaty44 · 01/10/2011 22:08

I have one bowl full of apples from some
ones garden, the other fruit bowl has apples bananas, pineapple, one kiwi and some dates, some easy peel little oranges and pears, three lemons and two limes

carabos · 01/10/2011 22:08

All chocolate based items kept in fridge. Fruit in fruit bowl except juicing oranges which are also in fridge (makes nice cold juice). Various other items migrate into fruit bowl when empty including hair bands, specs, lottery tickets, keys, fluff etc.

pissedrightoff · 01/10/2011 22:09

Oh I love my fruit bowl, A giant ceramic ikea job in a kind of a sandstone effect.
Filled with value bananas and apples.

upahill · 01/10/2011 22:09

No fruit bowl here!

AgentZigzag · 01/10/2011 22:09

I'm so envious of the two fruitbowl households, and the posters who obviously have their lives sorted and own a posh one.

I bet there are some people who have competitive fruitbowls stuffed full of fruit you wouldn't even be able to guess at what it is.

And then proceed to show off that they've achieved parenting nirvana, and their DC just eat whatever fresh produce they put in front of them Grin

Ayoop · 01/10/2011 22:09

Berries, grapes and things like melon and pineapple in the fridge.

Apples, pears, bananas and oranges in the fruit bowl Grin

stripeybump · 01/10/2011 22:09

My fruit bowl is ironically named as it only ever has sweets, crisps and chocolate in it Grin

toddlerama · 01/10/2011 22:10

We have a metal/wire bowl with a hook over the top for bananas. If the bananas touch the other fruit, it all goes mouldy. Please tell me this is not only my bananas.

beanandspud · 01/10/2011 22:11

I have a fruit bowl, with fruit in it. I just thought most people did.

It's a wire alessi one that I got as a leaving gift. I'm actually quite fond of it although it leaves strange circles on the fruit if it goes a bit soft.

AgentZigzag · 01/10/2011 22:11

And what about tomatoes?

Fridge or fruitbowl?

OP posts:
Faffalina · 01/10/2011 22:12

I didn't have one for four years. My fruit sat out on the side and pissed me off until I went and bought one the other week. Aaaah, much better.

worraliberty · 01/10/2011 22:12

Surely no-one keeps grapes in fruit bowls?

I thought you all ate them whilst walking round the supermarket? Grin

outnumbered2to1 · 01/10/2011 22:13

i inherited my fruit bowl from my sisters MIL when they cleaned out her house when she moved into sheltered housing. It sits proudly on my kitchen table and actually has fruit in it at the moment. but come wednesday of next week it'll have crayions, mail, a pack of babywipes, the pen i can never find and my spare house keys in it lol

beanandspud · 01/10/2011 22:13

MaryMother my DH does that too - it drives me mad and he can't see the problem.

Faffalina · 01/10/2011 22:13

Oh, was I meant to actually describe mine as well?

It is wooden. And round.

beanandspud · 01/10/2011 22:14

Tomatoes - currently kitchen windowsill - in a bowl that isn't a fruit bowl.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 01/10/2011 22:14

We have a cheapy metal fruit bowl from Wilkos. At the mo it has in it, some Dr Who cards, a Bakugan and some keys.

In the fridge we have grapes and strawberries. If i buy apples, bananas or satsumas though, they go in the bowl.

ChippingIn · 01/10/2011 22:14

I have far more fruit in the fridge than on the bench, but I do still have a fruit bowl - well two actually Grin as I don't like some of the stuff too close to each other but like them in bowls (mainly avocados/bananas). I LIKE my apples kept in the fridge :)

forrestgump · 01/10/2011 22:14

We have one ( we bought it in Mexico and I love it) apples are kept in the fridge and grapes, but bananas and oranges live in the fruit bowl.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/10/2011 22:15

Tomatoes go in fridge.

What about those stand things they sell in Lakeland for bananas. Anyone got one of those?

AgentZigzag · 01/10/2011 22:19

'I thought you all ate them whilst walking round the supermarket? '

Hey worra, have you ever thought about starting a thread on that? Wink

notlettingthefearshow · 01/10/2011 22:20

I have 2 fruit bowls, but some fruit lives elsewhere.

DH's chocolate and related products live in the freezer. Mine doesn't usually get that far as I usually eat it on the bus.
