To think most people still have a fruit bowl?

My friend doesn't, and I think she's the odd one out.

She keeps her fruit, and chocolate Hmm in the fridge.

My 'fruit bowl' is a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=small+round+wicker+basket&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1146&bih=718&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=zJ3VDvGAsfxY7M:&imgrefurl=www.welldressedtables.co.uk/products/Table_Accessories/Tableware/Wicker_Bread_Basket_Round/1090/&docid=xpPjmsou9r8YmM&w=300&h=300&ei=dnaHTv_zB8y78gOT44A1&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=327&page=2&tbnh=158&tbnw=158&start=15&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:15&tx=66&ty=103" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">wicker basket I got as a freebie full of crappy smellies from Grattan yonks ago when we were poor.

It's not swish by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm fond of it Smile

Although, taking it to the other extreme, I saw a lass on telly a bit ago having a go at her DP because he'd had an apple out of the fruit bowl when he should have got it from the cupboard Hmm

Her fruitbowl was for ornamental purposes only.

I bet she's the kind of person who irons her kegs and socks

I do not have a sweetie tin or drawer, however.

Faffalina · 01/10/2011 23:01

fit2drop yes, I heard the Banana Tale too, but not the Plum Story. Will of course abide by that one as well now, and there will be three bowls - General Fruit in one, bananas and plums in their own dwellings.

LidlVoice · 01/10/2011 23:05

I have two [preens]. One in the front room, which is a lovely wicker affair and contains apples, kiwis, clementines and pears. The other is for "big fruit" in the kitchen; melon, pineapple, avocado, lemons etc. I also have a banana tree (as putting bananas with other fruit makes them ripen too quickly). Grapes however, live in the fridge.

I'm right posh I am.

trixymalixy · 01/10/2011 23:07

My fruitbowl is a recycled washing machine door. Normally has mouldy lemons and limes in it!!

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 01/10/2011 23:07

I have a fruit bowl, into which I also throw the Onions and Garlic as I don;t have anywhere else to store them. When I first did this, I was concerned they would make the fruit taste funny, but they dont. DH puts fruit in the fridge when he buys it, and Itake it out again as being in the fridge makes it too cold for my teeth to bear. He feels the same, but takes an apple out of the fridge about half an hour before he wants to eat it so it gets to the right temperature [hmmm] men are odd.

DeepPurple · 01/10/2011 23:08

I have a fruit bowl but tend to only keep bananas in it. All other fruit is kept in the fridge.

Ifancyashandy · 01/10/2011 23:10

2 fruit bowls (for one person) here. One for 'soft' fruits - apples, bananas and (always - I eat tonnes of them) mangoes, peaches and the like. The other for citrus fruit. Tommyfartoes in a separate bowl as they over-rippen all fruits. 'cept when bananas need ripening - then the toms goes in with them.

Berries in the fridge but taken out an hour or so before needed, so they don't just taste of 'cold'.

I have 2 because we have a system whereby the fruit that needs eating up goes in one and the new fruit goes in the other. TBH we do still throw away a fair bit of mouldy fruit though.

AgentZigzag · 01/10/2011 23:13

Our dog loves her veg ruby, but just rolls on fruit Confused

Especially olives and lemons.

Chocolate in the fridge is wrong. I have a fruit bowl too Grin

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 01/10/2011 23:14

I have a fruit bowl (and a citrus bowl) which I inherited from my Grandma. I think of her every time I use it :)

AgentZigzag · 01/10/2011 23:17

Elderberry, my slatterny ways have contrubuted to the general publics overall health, when the cooker I'd not wiped from yesterdays dinner ensnared a score of fruit flies that were from two manky peaches in the fruitbowl came from nowhere overnight.

I hope you're grateful for me saving your life Grin

I have lots of fruit bowls!

In the kitchen, and all stainless steel, I have one with apples, pears, grapefruits, and pomegranates,
a second with oranges and lemons,
a third with kiwis,
a fourth with bananas (actually that one is a wire hammock so might not count).
Soft fruit (grapes, strawberries, raspberries, figs, blueberries etc) is kept in the fridge.

Then a couple more in the utility room, all china, with a fifth for tomatoes, six for onions, seven for garlic and red onions, and eight for potatoes.

Do I win? Grin

Clary · 01/10/2011 23:34

I have three fruit bowls. One metal wirey one, one large china bowl and one huge multicoloured platter. Only the first is actually meant to be a fruit bowl tho.

Went shopping today so all full to overflowing.

I keep strawberries, cherries, raspberries and sometimes grapes in the fridge. If I remember I get them out an hour before eating. Apples in the fridge is odd.

No chocolate here except for cooking, so that's kept in the baking cupboard.

Shallishanti · 01/10/2011 23:42

I made my fruit bowl in a pottery class. It's super big as there are lots of us and we eat a lot of fruit. It was tricky to make and is not perfect but I'm still pleased with it.
do I win?
and YADNBU- surely every normal person has a fruit bowl?

cumbria81 · 01/10/2011 23:45

this is such a middle class thread

Harecare · 01/10/2011 23:47

Is it? My family isn't middle class. Fruit bowls are just normal unless you have a veg rack, in which case the fruit goes in the top rack.

Kladdkaka · 01/10/2011 23:51

Chocolate in the fridge? How very bizarre. I keep all mine my tummy.

BaronessBomburst · 01/10/2011 23:53

Kladdkaka Grin You win.

EggyAllenPoe · 01/10/2011 23:53

fruit that doesn't do well in the fridge is kept in the 'colourful nest of mixing bowls' stored on a shelf in the kitchen.

so i suppose that is the fruit bowl. but fruit bow strikes me as something intended to temp guests/ residents with nice snack fruits....rather than 'bowl i chuck fruit into'

fit2drop · 01/10/2011 23:54

Harecare

Does it?? I have a veg rack , I put, errrrr veg in it.

Fruit in fruit bowl
veg in veg rack
salad stuff in produce container thingummy wotsit in fridge

chocolate in gob

sorted Grin

works for me

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/10/2011 23:54

Yes cumbria, fruit and where to put it is a middle class concept.

AgentZigzag · 01/10/2011 23:59

We keep DIY supplies in our veg rack Grin
