I looked at the Dad.

I looked at his little chubby toddler daughter in her pink Ramones t shirt.

I thought "God you are a twat"

YABU. FOr so many reasons! Agree that all clothes at v. young age are expression of parents taste (although my 5 year old alternates between only wearing a suit, including waistcoat and tie, and only wearing red jeans and black t-shirt, a la Jack White. Very much his OWN taste) Both DS's have band t-shirts, some purchased by us, others as gifts. You may well look at me & my toddler and think, "pretentious bitch. She's probably never even heard a Nine Inch Nails album" although I have about 3000 cd's and have seen 100's of bands live, music is v.important to me, and so naturally I would choose a band t-shirt over a toy story one if I am purchasing for a 1 year old! ALso it is better than the "I'm a horrible little bastard" ones that seem to be the main option when buying t-shirts for boys. Or fecking pirates.

The fluffy tutu with wellies and a jumper is all over the place here. It seems it is the first choice of those parents who nod along with the biographies in the Boden catalogue.

I suspect occasionally a child falls upon this combo but mostly it has been carefully put together by a parent. Otherwise instead of the four children I saw in town last Saturday wearing tutu and wellies, there would be the occasional party dress with socks, trainers and a balaclava . But no, tutu and wellies...

Reading this as 4 week old DS is sat in his Beatles babygrow Grin.

Awwwww, pag, you've just reminded me of my mum's friend's little boy - we were born a month apart and always used to play together - for about 4 years, he was obsessed with his balaclave. There are dozens of pictures of us together, at parties, in the park - him always in a balaclava. He used to wear it in the bath Smile

hiss42 · 16/09/2011 14:16

normantebbit it's a child not a lifestyle accessory? I sort of disagree. I understand he's not a handbag or a mini-me to show off with, but the way I chose to dress him and the activities I will encourage him to persue are very much those which I am interested in/how i would dress myself If I could at that age!

YABU, DS looks great in his Ramones t-shirt!

Not sure what he'd wear if I had to dress him in things 'relevant to his little life'.

I judge people who dress their toddlers in ways I don't like though - I think everybody does!

southeastastra · 16/09/2011 14:19

agree with op totally Grin

i also hate boys with long hair because mummy think it looks cool Grin

flame me Grin

BupcakesandCunting · 16/09/2011 14:21

He did, Orm. He doesn't like Oscar the Grouch for some reason...

Pagwatch · 16/09/2011 14:22

I have an issue with balaclavas. Hideous furry one my mum used to make me wear has scarred me I think PumpkinBones.
I looked like a big pubic head. Although I couldn't hear people shouting 'oi, public head' at me because of the furry balaclava.

NormanTebbit · 16/09/2011 14:22

I think it smacks of a mid-life crisis..

BupcakesandCunting · 16/09/2011 14:24

Grin at Pag.

DS has taken to wearing a pair of pants over his jeans when out on his scooter. He thinks he looks the skill and so do I. I won't repress his obvious flair for fashion. Unless he gets to fourteen and still thinks that underwear as outerwear is a good look, then I might have words!

Ormirian · 16/09/2011 14:25

"The fluffy tutu with wellies and a jumper is all over the place here"

Never managed that. DS2 managed tiger's head and willy combination though. Many times Hmm Often running down the street until headed off my kindly neighbours. I don't think anyone thought we were *pretentious' as such......

WilsonFrickett · 16/09/2011 14:29

How about boys with long hair because it actually looks cool and that is how said boy likes to wear it south? Hmmm?

Pagwatch · 16/09/2011 14:31

Tigers head and willy combo is a tough one to pull off.

Err..

HerRoyalNotness · 16/09/2011 14:32

H&M sell them. DH has one, and DSIL bought DS2 (1yo) one as part of a very trendy outfit.

HerRoyalNotness · 16/09/2011 14:33

DS1 has longish hair, friends always comment on how cool he looks, especially when he gets flippy with it Grin. And he likes it. Can't stand the short back and sides look.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/09/2011 14:34

Of course little kids have hair styles that mummy/daddy thinks is cool. Would you deliberately pick a hairstyle that you didnt think was nice/cool just so that you could say with conviction "yeah, I chose that hairstyle for little Johnny because I think it looks SHIT"? Confused

Same goes for clothes.

well yeah, if we conformed to short back and sides, i would think it looked shit.

but he oozes cool anyway, so he could probably make it work.

DS1 had long hair until the start of the summer holidays when he had it cut shorter - still longer than the bullet-head look a lot of the boys at his school sport. But it got him noticed. All the teachers knew his name at least partly because of his hair - when he got up to get his end of year awards the deputy head read out his name and then said "who has just had a hair cut" (cue much laughter). He relishes being he centre of attention so it suited him just fine.

He likes his hair long. I am indifferent what he does as long as he doesn't have it cut really short or with lines in it.

MamaLazarou · 16/09/2011 14:40

YANBU

Kids should only wear band t-shirts if they really do love the band. Band babygros are WRONG!

Anyway, the Ramones suck.

HerRoyalNotness · 16/09/2011 14:42

How do you stop a naturally cool child being cool though? I don't think it's something you can learn to be? I certainly am not.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/09/2011 14:42

Mine has an early 90s 'Madchester' bowlcut. Not intentional, that's just how it grows and I find it easy to trim it myself so it stays like that. I wouldn't like him to have long hair as he is very pretty so I know he would get mistaken for a girl easily, but nor would I allow him to have a grade two because they look like what happens after nits :(
