STAND UP AND BE COUNTED AND STOP THE ATTACKS ON SN PARENTS

ok NOT an aibu, but this is where it will be seen the most and it NEEDS awareness.

quite frankly, i along with others am appalled at the comments that are being made and left to stand, toward the SN community, they are downright offensive and quite simply appalling.

i am sure (or hope) that the majority on here do NOT agree with them but yet the SN community on mn are not being supported, whether this is because people do not know what to say, or they havent seen these posts i do not know?

BUT IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT THINGS CHANGED, so this a thread where you can stand up and be counted and say that you do not agree with the disregard, blatant trolling and offensive behaviour towards our lovely mn who have or are dealing with sn in their family.

they need this place for support, not the vile behaviour that they are getting.

so please post here and show your support and help make a change for the better.

all it takes is a smile next to your name to show you agree :)

I saw Lissie's post briefly and didn't think it deserved deleting. Maybe MNHQ were just deleting all reference to the vile post?? Although considering there are at least two threads on the go about inconsistent deletions in respect to standing up to ignorance/bigotry I doubt it.

SinicalSal · 13/09/2011 10:50

thanks for teh kind words above Peachy

I think you've got it spot on when you say if someone affected by an issue tells you a word is offensive, you'd stop using it. Look at the dictionary ffs it's massive, it's not like the English language will suffer because we can't (boohoo) say fucktrd, ni*er, or whatever.
that said, it won't get rid of the attitudes, but it at least acts as a kind of sign as to who has enough respect & empathy for other people and those who think their 'rights' trump all other considerations. (The right to use offensive language may well be on the same continuum of free speech 'n' that but it's pretty minor and hardly life changing to sensible people - I do see the point, but I think it's pretty shitty to labour it when what you gain is pretty negligable compared to the impcat it has on others).

Sense of entitlement, eh? Someone should tell the dm.

Thumbwitch · 13/09/2011 10:51

Must have been a different thread it was on then Irma, it's still on this one :(

I didn't see middlesex's post either.

IrmaMuthafucker · 13/09/2011 11:02

Yes thumb that's the one. And you're right it's still there! I had an email from MNHQ regarding a deletion and assumed it was that one. I reported something else last Thursday(!!) but that's still there too!

What is going on at MNHQ?

Thumbwitch · 13/09/2011 11:11

I don't know but I don't like it :(

Mouseface · 13/09/2011 11:11

Thumb - I've just posted on that thread pointing out to the offending poster that she maybe look up what it means........ vile word and should be deleted.

Why are these things being left to stand even hours after we have reported them and yet other posts are gone in second without being reported?

Thumbwitch · 13/09/2011 11:26

Mouseface - I hope she isn't rude to you - seems she didn't like Irma politely mentioning it in a PM.

I don't know - perhaps there is someone at MNHQ who regularly uses the word and thinks it's ok?

I have to say, I can't understand it at all. I'm no saint, please don't think I'm trying to say I am, but I have moderated my usage of terms enormously in case it offends. There was a whole debate recently as to whether or not the term "loon" was acceptable - and since some people found it to be offensive, I for one don't use it now. But there will be some who will stand by their right to use it (and other such terms) because they don't see why they should moderate their language for a few "sensitive flowers" Hmm.

But as Sinical said - it's all about whether or not you care that some people are offended, isn't it - I don't like to offend people so choose not to do it, other people couldn't care less so carry on.

IrmaMuthafucker · 13/09/2011 11:26

Oh dear. I was trying to avoid drawing attention to it on the thread so reported and PM'd the poster to tell her why. However, if people are posting on the thread maybe it'll help educate a few more people?

StartA it has to be hate speech towards a protected group to infringe law BUT the actual definition is hate speech against an indentifiable cahracteristic or group- and single mothers would fall under this.

It's down to whether MNHQ deletes on the basis of hate speech full stop, or legal infringement.

IrmaMuthafucker · 13/09/2011 11:38

Have had an email from MNHQ to say they've deleted the entire thread where that comment appeared. FFS!

From the email exchanges (I say exchanges. I send a reply and hear nothing again) I've had with MNHQ I don't believe they are even reading the messages. I reported a comment on a thread where MNHQ was asked a direct question about their deletion policy. The response back "Thanks for reporting this. We have deleted that post now" Confused

Whatmeworry · 13/09/2011 11:39

My point was one has to define hate speech/ unacceptable words carefully, and IMO some enthusiasts take it too far and you wind up with something unworkable. The argument a while back over use of "loon" was a good example of what i am talking about.

Irma, there was a strong suggestion of trollery on the thread - I expect people also reported it as a troll thread, which may be why the whole thread has gone.

Have just looked at that deleted thread and this is the message:
Thread deleted

This thread has been deleted by MNHQ because, let's face it, it turned into a bit of a bunfight.

Shock
Thumbwitch · 13/09/2011 11:43

I'm not really shocked but there wasn't really an appropriate smiley to explain how that made me feel!

IrmaMuthafucker · 13/09/2011 11:46

Thanks thumb I did see that but tbh even if it was trolling it wasn't doing any real harm IMHO. Apparently, according to MNHQ, it was deleted because it was becoming a bun fight.

I find it all baffling.

Peachy · 13/09/2011 11:46

I wouldn;t expect loon to be deleted (and do use it myself, I admit, at times) but whilst I may not expect a word to be deleted- fit is a good example, as in having a fit- equally I might expect the poster to politely refrain when someone has explained.

That thread links went whsilt In was reading it to a post from MNHQ saying it hd become a bun fight.

hate speech defined in law is simple to define and we are all bound by alw to stay within it; wrt to disability / homophobia / race it's quite a wide definton, more so that I expected when I looked it up. With other charactersitics and groups it's ahrder; I actually think a simple rule of thumb is that if teh wording was aimed at an individual rather than a defined group would it be deleted? If so then yes that should happen. Aiming it at a group changes zero; it can add to it.

'SN parents on here are bun fight starting harridans'

V

'you are a bun fight starting harridan'

First is worse IMO.

Second more likely to be deleted.

Dittany CiF is appalling isn't it? And quite often you think you've accidentally clicked on the DM but that's an aside.
