to think that evicting hundreds of travellers from their site is unfair and immoral

It's an illegal site. They didn't have planning permission. It's greenbelt...

but it used to be a car scrapyard (not rolling fields and thatched cottages then), they own the land and it's right next to a legal settlement.

They've obviously broken the law by settling here, but on balance, wouldn't it be more ethical to let them be? The children are settled at school and getting an education. Lots of people are prejudiced against gypsies and travellers but they've got to live somewhere.

I've seen the news articles about it. It makes me feel sad.

Will the UN getting involved change anything, I wonder? Will there actually be an eviction any time soon?

FellatioNelson · 03/09/2011 13:36

That post of 13.04 is spot on Blueberties

working9while5 · 03/09/2011 13:37

I reported one, SS. I suspect MNHQ are now monitoring and removing ones that demonstrate ethnic hatred.

There is no ethnic hatred here. There is hatred of selfishness, law breaking, anti-social and hostile behaviour, bullying, intimidation and landgrabbing.

There is no ethnic hatred here.

SarahStratton · 03/09/2011 13:40

They aren't an ethnic minority. Roma people are an ethnic minority. These travellers are Irish tinkers. Even back in Ireland they are not considered to be an ethnic minority. And back in Ireland they would be facing criminal charges. As they should here.

You're going to have that deleted too AWA...

I would just post your experiences again without the judgement, if you can be bothered. Somebody's got a beady eye out now. I got deleted and didn't say a thing. I think they've gone into anaphylaxis mode at HQ in case somebody says something really bad.

lachesis · 03/09/2011 13:44

'If it were a family of Muslims who had built on the land, in exactly circumstances, the uproar would be horrific. But because they are 'Travellers' they should be made homeless?'

No, it wouldn't. It would be, 'Shrug. They knowingly broke the law. They knowingly tried to circumvent the law. Now the courts have found in favour of the law, so they are being evicted. Meh.'

Blueberties · 03/09/2011 13:45

Yes I don't get the ethnic minority either. Are Irish people an ethnic minority in the UK? Maybe I don't understand the word ethnic. It's just a different nationality I thought.

Blueberties · 03/09/2011 13:46

Oh my goodness - I'm just listening to Joan Bakewell now. What a silly sausage. Now there's a woman without a clue about what she's on about.

well, that gem of a comment has just been reported

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2011 13:47

you will have to find a more subtle way of being racist if you don't want deleted

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2011 13:47
Hmm
working9while5 · 03/09/2011 13:48

Really? You can dispassionately say that calling a group of people scum, liars, thieves etc doesn't qualify as ethnic hatred?

AWA, you absolutely do not strike me as being even vaguely liberal in outlook. I am "stupid" because I don't share your opinion. Muslims apparently leave footprints (who would have thought it, they are not vampires!) and, of course, open shops. Travellers are scum and parasites and entirely lawless.

Very little of your writing makes sense, by the way. You would seek to improve and read? What does that mean? Improve what? Have you explained yet how you singlehandedly did something with the "exodus from Uganda", yet? You are not making a lot of sense right now.

SarahStratton · 03/09/2011 13:50

My niece is training to be a teacher and this time next year may well be teaching the children of the traveller hating people on here.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2011 13:53

Resorting to "fuck off". Hmm

working9while5 · 03/09/2011 13:54

Travellers are mentioned as a distinct group in several pieces of Irish legislation e.g. the 1988 Housing Act, the 1991 Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act, and the 1993 Unfair Dismissals (Amendment) Act, albeit not specifically as an ethnic group.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2011 13:56

What do you mean by "travellers are existential"?!

and Islam is a religion, not a race

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 03/09/2011 13:58

IMO, you're absolutely on the button Fellatio.

I suspect the Joan Bakewells and Vanessa Redgraves of this world find, that, wherever they go, the people they meet appear to be exceedingly charming and accomodating.

In that respect they're not dissimilar to Her Maj who most probably believes that all of her subjects live in sparkling clean premises that are redolent with the smell of Dulux.
