Names like Gemma82 or yummymummy1.

There's so much choice. Obviously I'm a sucker for a bad pun. But I love the variety of names on here - great song lyrics, obscure references that I feel compelled to go off and google (and never google again in the case of dragon butter), bizarre word combinations and so on.

There are some notable exceptions but normally I make an assumption that if a poster can't think of an interesting name then they won't have anything interesting to say.

I was really pleased when someone came on here to say that they had been at a monty Python west end show and had suddenly realised what my name meant...that made me smile!

shakey1500 · 31/08/2011 11:44

And I'm having trouble with the "o" on my keyboard.

cantpooinpeace · 31/08/2011 11:44

Does mine need changing? I've no idea which category I fall into and just simply can't poo in peace at my house!

grumpykat · 31/08/2011 11:45

But Mardy, now I feel all NAKED!

MissPenteuth · 31/08/2011 11:45

I think the reason for the number makes a difference. If you have a number because there's more than one person with your nn, that makes you a bit unoriginal. If the number has personal significance or is an integral part of the nn, that's different imo.

MigratingCoconuts · 31/08/2011 11:46

grumpy, could you write the number instead? or would that make the name too long?

MardyBra · 31/08/2011 11:46

cantpoo - very fine name. Shame we can't put apostrophes in names though.

OP posts:
MissPenteuth · 31/08/2011 11:46

cantpoo your name falls into the 'descriptive' category. Perfectly fine (although check with Mardy, she seems to be holding the gavel on this thread Grin).

Other categories are:
-puns
-film/TV/literary references

What else?

grumpykat · 31/08/2011 11:47

But if I write the numbers as letters will I need to use capitals

MigratingCoconuts · 31/08/2011 11:47

blatant swearing....

grumpykat · 31/08/2011 11:48

Obviously missing a fairly critical ? there, sorry!

hadagutsfull · 31/08/2011 11:48

Hi Mardy - have tweeted you too (sbjj24) but am worried my name is so uninspiring that you won't read me on there either Blush. Am going to have to spend the day thinking of something witty & eyecatching now!!

minipie · 31/08/2011 11:48

Phew, MardyBra

Wink

I'm probably just as bad though - I don't judge posters by their name but I do judge anyone using text speak. It grates.

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 31/08/2011 11:48

Can't say I bother too much about the bland names (well I wouldn't would I, mines not exactly 'on the edge')

I agree that the fluffy ones can be the real bitches, whilst 'ScaryCunt' is usually a pillar of support Grin

feistywtf · 31/08/2011 11:50

YABU, there is nothing wrong with the names people choose. I used to post with a fluffier name and namechanged to reflect my new personality after a rather traumatic time. I never analyse people's names but tend to focus on the thread. HTH

MardyBra · 31/08/2011 11:52

hadagutsfull - perfectly good name.

You just need to be more prolific though.

OP posts:
kingbeat23 · 31/08/2011 11:53

I have a random name and number combination - no needto explain to people why as it will probably out me in RL and feel no need to change it otherwise, does his mean my posts have been ignored??

::watches tumbleweed blow past::

UserNameNotAvailable · 31/08/2011 11:53

Every name I tried was taken, even the ones that looked like they were free weren't accepted. I got sick of trying to think of one and after the umpteenth time seeing User name not available (or nickname not available - can't remember which) I tried that and it was free.

My df always says that df stands for daft fucker.

I'm not really bothered if people think my name is crap and my post are not worth reading. I never know whose post I'm reading tbh I usually just read the op's name but have normally forgotten it by the time I get to the bottom of the page.

MissPenteuth · 31/08/2011 11:54

Only by MardyBra, kingbeat.

LeBOF · 31/08/2011 11:54

Can you have just one guts though? That is my quibble with that.

hadagutsfull · 31/08/2011 11:55

Phew thanks Mardy Now to be prolific ... Grin

Secrecy · 31/08/2011 11:56

UserName - I always imagined you came to that name after a long a frustrating time trying to register Grin

hadagutsfull · 31/08/2011 11:56

No, definitely hadagutsfull or nowt.

Oakmaiden · 31/08/2011 12:02

I don't always even read the names on posts, although I must do sometimes as there are a group of posting names that are "familiar" to me.

Now, I AM an "old time" mumsnetter, although had a break of several years where life was just too busy for forums - and have kept the same name since I first joined the site. And I strongly suspect that I am largely unknown by other posters despite this.... Which I guess is why I have never bothered changing my name - I don't reckon people will pay that much attention to me anyway....

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 31/08/2011 12:02

UserName that's definitely my new favourite MN name :o
