to loathe this sense of entitlement we hear/read/see everyday

the idea of some taxes is to pay into a pool for those in genuine need of some kind of benefits. but i am sick to death of people who feel that just because they paid tax for a certain amount of years they can now claim benefits just because they say "its their money". these people are making fraudulent claims but its justified to them because they have paid into the pot so to speak and now its their turn to give up working and relax.

if i hear "i am entitled to ..." one more time i'll smack someone!

we have become a nation of "entitlers".

even my own family ask why do i work x amount of hours when i coudl claim this that and the other. "you are entitled to you know"! er .... no i'm not.

Coco, you and Blue are misunderstanding my question:

What makes the money in your bank account yours and not your employer's?

Of course the money in your bank account is yours. I am not implying that it isn't Hmm. I am asking you what makes it yours, and how the process which makes it yours does not apply when you pay taxes to the government.

Any idea?

fargate · 25/08/2011 18:53

Apologies for earlier ranting.[embaressed]

coco if everyone quit their job even for a few days wouldn't that be a General Strike*? Followed by a state of emergency and bringing in the army.

Is that what you mean?

DrPolidori · 25/08/2011 18:53

well, I have just had to sign on, having had to make myself redundant, along with 9 other people. Do I feel entitled? You bet I do. I don't feel bad about it at all. I am grateful to live in a society that cares for its disadvantaged.

Don't get me wrong, I am plotting lots of ways to get the business back up and running, but in the meantime, I need to feed and clothe ds and me, and keep aroof over our heads. For which I am heartily grateful. But I HAVE paid into the system for over 40 years, so hey, the contract between me and the state stands.

tethersend · 25/08/2011 18:54

I'll take that as a 'no', then Blue.

Shame, because I was actually enjoying the debate before you decided to get personal.

Blueberties · 25/08/2011 18:57

Why would you take it as a "no"? Take what as a "no"?

I don't feel this is personal at all tethers - I know nothing about you. I taking issue purely with your extraordinary views.

Would actually love to hear more.

Cocoflower · 25/08/2011 18:59

*Farhate" If everyone woke up and thought "screw this working malarky" and quit indefinitly there would no longer be a benefit system at all because the income ceases to exsist.

It would collapse over night.

I agree with your situation *DrPolidori"- you have helped others in the past woth your taxes now its your turn when in need.

Tethers "am asking you what makes it yours, and how the process which makes it yours does not apply when you pay taxes to the government." but I do see the money in the bank or that you give the goverment as "yours"

You generated that money in the first place.

lachesis · 25/08/2011 19:00

'DH's cousin has just announced her 4th pregnancy, has never had a job, neither has her partner, and they are getting a Surestart payment and a bigger house on the council.'

The Surestart grant is no longer available to a mum-to-be who is not expecting her first child.

crazynanna · 25/08/2011 19:00

You are very odd
You are extraordinary. Who do you think will take you seriously?

These are a bit below the belt on Tethers,do you not think Blueberties?

lachesis · 25/08/2011 19:00

Or who has had it before.

It's only paid out once.

tethersend · 25/08/2011 19:02

"I know nothing about you. I taking issue purely with your extraordinary views."

"You are very odd."

"You are extraordinary. Who do you think will take you seriously?"

Add those definitely not personal comments to the fact that you are quoting me from old threads, and anyone would think that you're madly in love with me.

Ah. Is that what it is? Just come out and say it.

I wouldn't blame you if you were. I am pretty amazing.

Blueberties · 25/08/2011 19:06

Oh _ I mean your views. Sorry I'll put it differently.

"Your views are very odd. They are extraordinary. Who do you think will take them seriously?"

And you did repeat them at the top of the thread. And if you haven't changed your mind, why are you embarrassed to discuss them?

tethersend · 25/08/2011 19:07

Coco- "You generated that money in the first place."

Yes, exactly- which is how it works with tax. The government generates an income through taxation.

The money, once it's paid, ceases to be 'yours' and becomes the government's. If you disagree with how they spend it, you elect another- this is why successive governments continue to use taxation so heavily in their election campaigns.

crazynanna · 25/08/2011 19:07

I'm in love with you Tethers! Smile But not in the biblical sense,of course Wink

fargate · 25/08/2011 19:09

Is farhate a typo or a freudian slip Hmm coco?

If everyone quit there wouldn't be any food in the supermarkets within 4 days if lorry drivers didn't work. Or electricity. Or water.

Never mind no benefits. Reductio absudum seriously undermines your arguement. Non?

Cocoflower · 25/08/2011 19:10

Yes Tethers but the point is the goverment would not have that money had you not worked for intially. Nothing to apy.

I do wonder what would happen if people could choose where their taxes went though.... I wonder....

Glitterknickaz · 25/08/2011 19:11

What the jeff is single mother's allowance? Never heard of it in my life....

Cocoflower · 25/08/2011 19:12

Er...Your a little paranoid fargate... everyone knows Im the queen of typos on here!

Actually, you have simply added too and strengthened , (not undermined ) my argument- so thanks!

Glitterknickaz · 25/08/2011 19:13

Also "good times" on benefits? Mynotfinkso.
You do realise they're set at sustenance level? Not 'flatscreentvandbling' levels.

tethersend · 25/08/2011 19:13

Blue, why on earth would you think I was embarrassed of my views? I (re)quoted them for you.

I point blank refuse to discuss views I espoused on another thread, months ago. It's odd that you would even try to. As I said, resurrect that thread and we can talk about it there, otherwise it is very unfair on the OP. Feel free to quote me from this thread.

Blueberties · 25/08/2011 19:14

Are you saying one oughtn't to deplore theft from the state, or should turn a blind eye to it like usualsuspect, because of universal suffrage?

I disagree with that rather robustly. I deplore it. I'll deplore it again in four years with my vote but I'm going to deplore it on this thread. Shame others find it so so so so tough to do that.

tethersend · 25/08/2011 19:14

crazynanna, you're only flesh and blood. Don't fight it.

tethersend · 25/08/2011 19:15

"Are you saying one oughtn't to deplore theft from the state, or should turn a blind eye to it like usualsuspect, because of universal suffrage?"

Is that to me?

It's just that I haven't said that. Anywhere.

crazynanna · 25/08/2011 19:16

must.....resist....oh fuck it,just snog me Grin

Blueberties · 25/08/2011 19:16

But they're about entitlement. We are discussing exactly the same thing and you are not embarrassed by those views and have repeated them on the thread.

What's the problem? You aren't contradicting yourself, or hiding under a namechange, or ashamed of what you said. It's not irrelevant. We're talking about the same thing and you still hold those views.

I don't get it - are you just looking for something to be upset about?

fargate · 25/08/2011 19:16

Well. By defn I wouldn't know if I was paranoid, would I Smile

I'd no idea about yr propensity for typos.
