To be irritated by people who say they can't lose weight?

BeerSnake · 24/08/2011 17:00

umm just eat less and get out more. Or am I being unreasonable?

OP posts:
rhondajean · 25/08/2011 14:33

Right lets be reasonable about this

Some people - but a small minority - have medical conditions which affect their weight.

Most do not.

You lose weight by reducing calorie intake and increasing movement - thats simple. So to lose weight IN ITSELF is easy.

The big problem I think is the food we are being sold. Ive been doing a very specific diet and weights programme and walking round the supermarket its really made me look at whats on the shelf. Its actually AWFUL how much crap is projected at us and its far too easy to throw in low value foods. Then they dont keep you full, so you eat more, because its simple carbs which you digest fast.

Im also constantly horrified by how little a lot of people really know about food and how it works. And I was one of them until a few years ago. As Ive said before, DH is training to be a personal trainer and very interested in this stuff.

And yes we do eat rubbish, but in moderation.

I think we are fighting an uphill battle against marketing, free availability of poor food choices, people using cars etc and walking less, increasing costs of gym membership, a society which presents a "perfect" body image so far removed from reality most people give up, and our western civilisation which has taught us since rationing ended that food is our friend.

Im going to sit inthe corner now with my riot shield up and see if anyone agrees.

cadelaide · 25/08/2011 14:43

But I didn't swear.

I just said something like;

"...but of course I know

SDTGisAnEvilGenius · 25/08/2011 15:14

Rhondajean - it is NOT just about the food we are sold.

Take me as an example. I weigh in the region of 20 stone. Lets assume a 'normal' weight for an adult woman is 10 stone. So for me, going for a walk is the equivalent of a normal woman with another normal woman strapped to her back going for a walk. It's not easy, I can tell you!

Add to that the fact that I quoted earlier, about fat producing hormones that affect your energy levels, making you feel permanently tired, and just taking a bit more exercise is a lot less easy than it sounds.

I'm not throwing missiles at your riot shield - I am trying to make you see the very real difficulties someone like me faces - and that's before we consider the issues of depression and catastrophically low self esteem that also contribute to my condition.

Threads like this, that say that losing weight is easy really hurt me - because I know that every one of you that's saying this on here is also a real person who might be judging me in real life, when I venture out of the house, and condemning me as lazy - and too stupid to realise what I need to do and what I need to eat.

Come out from behind the shield and try to empathise with the pain I am feeling, and then tell me losing weight is easy, as the OP states.

SouthernFriedTofu · 25/08/2011 15:17

Um MNHQ can you please come on the thread and explain why the disguting comments by xenia and mr gimpy were allowed to stand but not the understandably fucked off responses?

Or could you exen explain why a name like mrgimpy is allowed in the first place?

Pretty please

TheRealTillyMinto · 25/08/2011 15:22

Hi SDT but the fact that you weigh more, means you will use many more calories just moving around the house.

also the OP is referring people saying they cannot loose weight, which IMO is very different than it not being the right time to even try.

SouthernFriedTofu · 25/08/2011 15:23

urband dictionary- gimpy

wikiy- gimpy

It's not our policy to delete swearwords (we are all adults, after all) but we do draw the line at obscenity, racist and disablist language, and wording that is truly beyond the pale. So, if you're not sure which side of that line your swearword of choice may fall, it might be best not to use it.

PinotsWolefCubs · 25/08/2011 15:30
MoominsAreScary · 25/08/2011 15:30

But it's ok to make stupid comments about Auschwitz where thousands of people were starved to death

MoominsAreScary · 25/08/2011 15:34

And obviously the disablist word gimpy is fine too

SouthernFriedTofu · 25/08/2011 15:37

moomins don't be silly, it's perfectly ok to say the mass genocide of 7 million people was a really good diet plan and that Mr Gimpy is a really hilarious screen name.

SouthernFriedTofu · 25/08/2011 15:40

I have reported my post to ask MNHQ to come on line and respond moomins

SDTGisAnEvilGenius · 25/08/2011 15:43

I was going to do that for you, SouthernFriedTofu - great minds think alike! Grin

Anyhow - off to psychotherapy group to deal with all my issues. Sad

SouthernFriedTofu · 25/08/2011 15:45

Evil geniuses must stick together

RowanMumsnet · 25/08/2011 15:49

Hello

We had a look at the Belsen/Auschwitz comments and, while we think they're unpleasant and misplaced (to say the least), we don't delete purely on the grounds of bad taste.

We do delete for troll hunting and personal attacks, which is what the deleted posts were.

Please remember to report any trolling suspicions directly to MNHQ using the report button rather than posting on the thread.

Thanks,
MNHQ

PinotsWolefCubs · 25/08/2011 15:50

Oh Rowan....

Can. Open. Worms. Everywhere.

This will not end well.

RowanMumsnet · 25/08/2011 15:51

Apologies SouthernFried, only just seen your post about 'gimpy'; that's a new one on me and we take that on board. It's probably not giving too much away to say that our friend with the unpleasant name won't be posting any more.

PinotsWolefCubs · 25/08/2011 15:54
SouthernFriedTofu · 25/08/2011 15:56

Thank you rowan, I don't agree with the aushwitz/belsin comment but I see your point and why you won't delete.

Devastated we won't be hearing from mrgimpy in the future though, obviously.

MoominsAreScary · 25/08/2011 15:57

I did notice his thread about harrodans had vanished

Pan · 25/08/2011 15:58

and Holocaust ref. re weight loss isn't a rather cruel and unpleasant ref. to the experience of German and Jewish people being slaughtered,( largely), because they were Jewish, and hence more than a tad racist?
And this is okay?

TheSecondComing · 25/08/2011 15:58

This reply has been deleted

Pan · 25/08/2011 16:00

sorry, "and Polish people" not Jewish.

RowanMumsnet · 25/08/2011 16:08

TSC - your post mentioned the 'T' word twice (and the 'fcking cnt' words once Grin)

Pan - no, we don't think it's racist (or anti-Semitic) to make thoughtless/tasteless remarks about concentration camps. We would definitely delete if we thought a post was racist or anti-Semitic (in case anyone was in any doubt about that).

Empusa · 25/08/2011 16:10

Are we not allowed to mention the T word anymore?

Even if someone's message is trolling*? (Not necessarily the same as calling someone a troll)

*To troll - has always meant posting something offensive in order to get a response

ShirleyKnot · 25/08/2011 16:15

I'm not being funny, but saying shit about concentration camp victims in the context of this thread is more than "bad taste"

Going to have to throw you a Hmm face MNHQ.
