'All right love..'

don't know whether to put this here but it's bugging me. People who use 'love' to refer to women when they disagree with them. 'All right love...' kind of thing. Usually men but sometimes women do this as well.

Being called "Missus" makes me want to grab marshmallows and shive them up the utterer's nostrils.

[gah]

Honeydragon · 23/08/2011 16:00

alright Missus?

ShoutyHamster · 23/08/2011 16:03

I don't mind it - but if it's being used to patronise me I generally drop in a couple of 'darlings' or even a 'sweets' a bit later in the conversation to even up the score Wink

ShoutyHamster · 23/08/2011 16:05

I grew up in South Wales where it tends to be 'bach'. Which can be quite FULL ON if used in a certain way. 'Alright BACH???' 'Come on BACH time to GO NOW' Grin

ShoutyHamster · 23/08/2011 16:07

Beefy men in markets Grin

The north is HEAVING with them Grin Grin

HeifferunderConstruction · 23/08/2011 16:45

I doesnt bother me unless its meant to patronise

AnyFucker · 23/08/2011 16:51

I use "love" all the time

I am from Manchester, that's what we do

corny...you should know that love

TobyLeWolef · 23/08/2011 16:51

Men do it with 'mate' to other men just as much. Can't stand it.

TobyLeWolef · 23/08/2011 16:52

I use 'love' or 'lovey' quite a lot, btw, but only when I mean it.

AnyFucker · 23/08/2011 17:03

I use "mate" sometimes, but only with blokes

I dunno why Confused

Honeydragon · 23/08/2011 17:09

I call male friends matey. I find they call me matey too, but all other females darlin'. Sad Clearly I have no femminity left at all. Wink

LolaRennt · 23/08/2011 17:09

Hate it on mumsnet.

Also "run along dearie" etc the person saying it always thinks they are being really clever as well... Yeah very original

TobyLeWolef · 23/08/2011 17:09

I will stand for being called many things, but I absolutely loathe being called 'mate' by a man or a woman.

MittzyTheVixen · 23/08/2011 17:23

The only one that gets my goat, is Dear... Ok with shopkeepers, bus drivers, trades people etc but otherwise , I do do a tiny inward mental wince..

And it should never, ever, EVER be used in a chat up line

MrsBradleyCooper · 23/08/2011 17:27

A chat up line with the word Dear in it sounds like something only a feathery stroker or Ken Barlow would say.

SouthernFriedTofu · 23/08/2011 17:29

I hate being called mate by men, find it funny when other girls do it though

cornsilx · 23/08/2011 18:02

AF -I don't mind the term in itself.... it's when it's used in a sneery way that annoys me. When you know that the person saying it is really using it instead of something like twat. Grin

lazarusb · 23/08/2011 18:29

I like being called 'Miss'. I'm 40 Grin Perhaps it's the hidden dominatrix in me!

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 18:59

I remember being highly amused when I moved to Edinburgh for a while being referred to a "Doll" - I think women used it for women and men and men used it just for women (obviously!)

I didn't mind it and preferred it to "Hen" which people use round the Glasgow Central belt areas.

Don't mind "darlin'" or "love" if it's just a cheery greeting.

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 18:59

Glasgow and Central belt

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 19:02

feathery stroker - arrgh

You knew my ex neighbour didn't you MrsBradley

He said dear and clutched at my arms .........

Sharney · 23/08/2011 19:10

I read somewhere once that a photographer once called out to Princess Anne "give us a smile love" to which she replied "I'm not your love, I'm your Royal Highness". Don't know if it's true but it is funny.
For the record I don't mind being called love or babe or sweetheart. :o
