to think smokers should be made to smoke away from people?

I've always been quite anti smoking had a gran who dies of lung cancer, but since I was pregnant with DD and now that I'm out and about with her it really angers me when people are smoking in public areas, if it were up to me I'd ban smoking in all public places ie high streets, door ways to, restaurants, childrens play areas etc and don't even get me started on the bit outside the hospital and make people smoke in smoking rooms or back streets. I got abuse from a woman the other day who came over to speak to DD and puffed her smoke all over her when I asked her not to.

Fabby am with you on that...Amberleaf is great. Although when I am feeling extravagent I go for Drum. Golden V is vile.

LadyBeagleEyes · 22/08/2011 22:23

I smoke amberleaf too, probably about 4 50g pouches pm.
I went to the Canaries last year and it worked out about £15 for a pack of 5 fifty gram pouches.
Cigarettes are so cheap, they must be dropping of like flies there, as after all the taxes here are only there to protect our health.
Yeah right.

notlettingthefearshow · 22/08/2011 22:24

I'm not keen on smoke either, especially while pregnant, but come on! Smokers already have to smoke outside. There has to be somewhere for them to go.

I would rather stand next to a smoker than someone who is visibly drunk and reeks of the stuff (it's lovely, my bus stop!). Plus the drunk person is more likely to behave unpredictably/violently. I have never felt scared of a smoker unless they were also drunk. The effects of tobacco are minor in comparison to alcohol.

MrsDBouquet · 22/08/2011 22:25

That's good, LadyB. Wow.

It annoys me intensely that we are always being 'encouraged' to give up. Can you imagine if we all did ? I would love to know where the lost tax would come from then.

alphabettyspagghetti · 22/08/2011 22:26

Thats when they would tax us for fresh air Mrs B. Or are they already doing that by stealth?

MrsDBouquet · 22/08/2011 22:27

Grrr Angry alpha Wink

MrsDBouquet · 22/08/2011 22:28

'Fresh' air ?

With all us smokers outside ? Don't be daft.

Proper fresh air would probably kill me ! Grin

alphabettyspagghetti · 22/08/2011 22:28

Have a fag Mrs B, anger isnt good for you. Grin

MrsDBouquet · 22/08/2011 22:29
Grin
alphabettyspagghetti · 22/08/2011 22:30

If everyone gave up it would be (if you ignore pollutants from cars, waste grounds, chimneys, industrial sites etc, etc, etc..)

alphabettyspagghetti · 22/08/2011 22:31

What about chemicals from air fresheners? eh? eh? They cant be good for you either and more people have those than fags (for now).

adamschic · 22/08/2011 22:31

I think they are well aware of how much revenue is lost due to people giving up and people are giving up now. That's why they keep on putting up the taxes, I'm sure they are a lot more expensive in relative terms.

This thread reminds me of a scene I witnessed a couple of months ago. I was in a shop next to a train station and a young woman was having an argument with the manager. She wasn't being rude to him but voices were raised enough for me to wonder what was wrong. Turned out she had been refused the sale of some cigs. She was clearly in her late 20's and was trying to appeal to him to overturn the assistants mistake. He wouldn't budge and I felt sorry for her epecially as she was about to get on a train for a long journey. I thought it's nanny state gone mad and would have given her a cigarette had I not given up.

alphabettyspagghetti · 22/08/2011 22:33

Why was she refused the sale adams?

adamschic · 22/08/2011 22:35

Think 25 campaign and she obviously didn't have photo ID with her. She was saying, I just want to have a cigarette before I get on the train and she could understand it if she was 20 but she is 28.

alphabettyspagghetti · 22/08/2011 22:38

Ah. Fair enough. It's fustrating when you get asked for ID and you really, really need a fag for something like that. Sometimes it's hard to take it as a compliment when someone asks you for ID.

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2011 22:39

I haven't read all the thread - can't be bothered.

The OP is re-hashing a boring old theme so well done her Hmm

But I will say this - you don't own "outside". Got it? Good.

I am absolutely not going to give you a run-down on the other synthetic environmental chemicals that your child is being exposed to constantly, every day, because you are surely smug enough to know them all anyway.

A few puffs of smoke will do absolutely nothing to you or anyone else compared to the other crap that is out there.

Scholes34 · 22/08/2011 22:56

Perhaps it is rehashing a boring old theme, but the response will always be a reminder to smokers that they, and the air around them, stinks. It's a real disappointment that on a nice day you can't sit outside a cafe without having smoke blown across your table.

So, if the OP doesn't own the outside air, does that mean the smokers do?

I really don't care what a smoker does to their own health, but the mere whiff of a cigarette gives me a headache - that's why I don't like smoke around me.

reelingintheyears · 22/08/2011 23:03

BORING..

If smokers/ing give you a headache then stay awy from them

And i don't believe that the merest whiff gives you a headache.

Scholes34 · 22/08/2011 23:13

reeling don't really care if you don't believe me in this virtual world - don't know if you're a smoker or not, but the majority of smokers don't realise the impact their smoking has on others.

So, I'm sitting outside a coffee shop, halfway through my coffee. A smoker comes and sits at the next table and you're saying I should move? Actually, now I think about it, I usually do.

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2011 23:14

Jeez, you proselytizing anti-smokers got what you wanted!!

You forced us outside... which I don't actually have a problem with (and never did).

And now you are moaning about that as well.

As for your "merest whiff" comment - do you get the "vapours" as well? Are you "of a delicate constitution"?

How on earth do you cope with BBqs (same chemicals - you know that right?) or diesel fumes or bonfires?

Do you live in a bubble?

Scholes34 · 22/08/2011 23:20

Don't live in a bubble and definitely don't have a delicate constitution. My mother was a smoker until she was pregnant with me, then instantly gave up and cigarettes made her feel ill. Have never been able to stand the smell of cigarette smoke. Also don't like vanilla based perfumes. That has the same effect. Found that out when I was pregnant with DC1 when I shared an office with a colleague with expensive tastes in perfume. Didn't ask her to stop wearing the perfume though.

It's my outside too, and I'd like some fresh air, thank you very much.

Crosshair · 22/08/2011 23:23
Hmm
reelingintheyears · 22/08/2011 23:24

Scholes34

You can sit inside while drinking your coffee.

The smoker can't sit inside while he smokes.

reelingintheyears · 22/08/2011 23:25

And the smoker's taxes (help) pay for your health care.

Salmotrutta · 22/08/2011 23:30

Perhaps you should run a controlled experiment to find out which is worse - cigarette smoke or vanilla-based perfume?

I, for one, would be very interested in the results. Hmm
