I did this yesterday . There is a new butchery doing loads of advertising so I popped in to have a look. Their meat was grey!! I turned to DH and said that there is no way I would consider buying here. I turned around and the owner had come up behind us. I didnt mind as it was really horrible looking but my poor DS gave me a lecture in the car about how the poor man must have felt.

you own a shop that displays prices, people need to see those prices before ascertaining whether to buy something in your shop or elsewhere, and why shouldn't they comment on whether your prices are more than somewhere else? they are stating a fact. only you can change the fact that your prices are more than elsewhere.

and yes, Lord, you're right, it's not always cheaper - and add to the fact that you can only buy in CostCo if you're a member, and you have to have some business need to be a member (eg buyer or whatever)

Costco is a wholesaler, not a retailer - the whole point of the shop/chain is to sell things to people who will then sell them on.

Booy - they can decide for themselves that the prices are cheaper elsewhere, they can discuss it very quietly with their family or whoever is with them, but it's really not fair to discuss those prices out loud in front of other customers.

I know a lot of things are cheaper online/in bargain shops etc, but I know my DC love going into a proper bookshop and browsing, then buying something. Clicking on something online and waiting for the postman to bring it just isn't the same. I've never been to Costco (not even sure what it is TBH!) but I bet the experience isn't as nice as a proper bookshop.

DS1 asked for a book token for his birthday, but stipulated that it had to be "for the proper book shop in town, not Amazon!"

Have to admit it's amazon every time for books. Sorry, but they are cheap and arrive quickly

Figgy - yes I do have a costco card - I use it to buy books at wholesale prices so that i can sell them to my customers at retail prices.

I also used it to buy the food for my wedding.

I didn't stand in every other shop and shout out loudly that I could buy x,y or z cheaper elsewhere

There are billions of places around the world that probably sell what Nickel sells cheaper but you don't get the personal service, knowledge or cup of tea if you are mnetter! Plus you get things you don't find elsewhere and the convenience of having it instantly!

It's a rare and wonderful thing these days.
I'd much rather browse in a shop like that and pay an extra couple of quid, than go to some massive outlet.

amazon is a huge company that basically has the market share on the internet.

yeah, for a lot of things they're cheaper, but that's because they're a huige company, and can demand better discounts from the publishers than normal retailers.
they're also greedy, grabbing bastards.

how is buying from amazon quicker and easier than going into your local shop and taking a book off the shelf and buying there and then? you could have read it by nightfall, instead of waiting a couple of days for it to arrive.

and what if you want a recommendation? or you want to browse? or have a conversation with a real person? or look for something that you'd not thought of before?
you need a real book shop for that.

really? you think they are deliberatelytrying to take customaway rom you? what did you do on them that tehy want your business to fail? or are you perhaps projecting your own personal fears onto your customers when in reality they are simply telling their children they can save £2 of their pocket money if they go to costco?

Tell them, 'Well yes it was cheaper, but as you have probably heard, Costco exploded in the early hours of this morning, so that avenue is now closed to you alas' with a broad smile. That will stop them in their penny-pinching tracks!
