and tell their children at full volume in front of other customers that "you can get that cheaper in Costco"?

I'm fucking fed up the back teeth of people doing that!!

Why don't you just fuck off to Costco then, and stop trying to lose me the precious very few customers I get????

Shock

beggars belief. AngryHmmSad

You might be able to help me again actually. 20 month old DD wakes up really early most mornings (5.20am-ish) and I've recently had some luck with keeping her quiet for a bit longer - so we can sleep for a bit longer - by leaving some books in her bed when I go to check on her. She loves to "read" so she sits happily looking at the books for a while before she calls for us.

But it's quite dark in her room as she has black out blinds and it's only going to get darker as the year goes on so I thought maybe some books with lights in might help. Do you know of any books suitable for a toddler that have lights in? I don't mind if they play a tune too as long as it's fairly quiet. I've seen some lullabye books on Amazon that look OK but there's no way of knowing if they're too loud when you can't see them - this is why we need bookshops :)

nickelbabe · 19/08/2011 17:04

i've got a winnie the pooh one with lights in.
ooh, but it's out of print so i might have the only one left in existance! Shock
it's £9.99

I would love to live near a proper book shop. I'd love to live near any book shop - even the chains are disappearing from my area - I don't think anyone buys books round here except me .

Your shop looks fab nickel.

BTW in one of the towns near me, the traders all grouped together to run a shop local campaign, would it work where you are?

nickelbabe · 19/08/2011 17:17

we've got one
i offer 10% discount :)

That sounds loads better than ours.

flyingspaghettimonster · 19/08/2011 18:29

I was in Hamleys the other day and couldn't resist telling some guy that was being given a hard sale on an animatronic dog toy that it was 75 pounds cheaper in T K Maxx... why should a store be able to charge such hiked up prices? Sure, if you pay higher rent, are a small shop pwner etc then raise prices a little to cover that, but sometimes it is ridiculous.

Desiderata · 19/08/2011 18:31

I get this in my pub. People order a drink, and then proclaim that it's cheaper at the Co-op.

Indeed it is, you twats. So fuck off, and go drink there.

DirtyBit · 19/08/2011 19:58

Ooh I've just been browsing your site, I'm tempted to spend far too much on DD who can't even sit up let alone read yet .

Blatherskite · 19/08/2011 20:28

Put the Winnie the Pooh one aside for me Nickel Wink

nickelbabe · 22/08/2011 15:06

Blather done :)

flyingspaghettimonster - it doesn't quite work like that.
especially with books - the RRP is set by the manufacturer, and then they sell it to the retail outlets according to their usual spend - the bigger your chain, the more discount you can get. that means that the retailer is able to sell the items either at the retail price, or at a special offer/discount.
It's not that we set the prices higher top benefit from it, it's that the big chains set their prices lower to entice people in.

It's easier to see with books, because the price is printed onto the book.

DirtyBit - pelase don't let me stop you

(to add DirtyBit - there are loads of cloth books etc, and you're never too early to start reading bedtime/cuddletime stories :) )

grumpykat25 · 22/08/2011 21:57

Nickel! My mum bought dd a copy of Miffy's garden from you a few weeks ago whilst on her hols. She was wittering on about what a lovely shop/lady etc and when I saw the bag I got all "ooh! She's on MN"! Thanks for the book, dd loves it and we read it before we go to the allotment. Smile

nickelbabe · 23/08/2011 14:08

Wow! That was quick nickel. DD's Winnie the Pooh book arrived this morning and she loves it. Her little fingers arw a bit weedy for pushing the button though so she kept grabbing my hand and pulling it over to the button for me to press it for her :)

And DS was very impressed with all the baloons.
