To think that "place marking" is just fucking rude

I've just read a distressing thread (as opposed to an amusing thread where I don't really mind so much) on which the OP needed help support and the number of posters who have just typed ".", presumably to place mark has really pissed me off.

It's not fucking entertainment folks and if you want to treat it as such at least have the decency not to be so blatant about it and try one of these approaches:

i) Add something useful

or

ii) type something appropriate: you've clicked on the message box and are going to click and wait on the post button so why so hard to type "good luck" of "OMG that is awful"

or

ii) Add to your watched threads

AIBU to think it is really not that hard not to behave like a rude rubbernecker

OP posts:

Saul, I never use watched either. I had a look the other day and the last thread on it was from 2008. Same as I never search topics unless looking for a specific thread. Everyone mns differently. I use TIO and active convos.

As someone else said, I loathe thread about threads and threads (usually in aibu) moaning about being bullied on another thread. You got flamed, deal with it and grow up!

ZZZenAgain · 14/08/2011 11:14

I have put a few threads on "watch" . I forget all about them and never look them up, just never think of it. It is always education, things that might be relevant one day but not atm and I have nothing to contribute to.

I think most of us just aren't used to using that facility much, at least not the way we use the TIO

OracleInaCoracle · 14/08/2011 11:15

Belgo, agree there.

Ps, sorry for multipost. Twatphone again.

belgo · 14/08/2011 11:16

lissielou - I dislike 'threads about a thread' because I never realise they are a 'thread about a thread' and get caught out posting something that ends up being misinterpreted.

ZZZenAgain · 14/08/2011 11:17

2009 Sport and Exercise: I need to run, can anyone make me? That's on my watch list

I still need someone to make me do it 2 years on. I never went back to read it in all that time

bananamam · 14/08/2011 11:19

Because like others have said in forget to watch. And it is a public forum. I have the right to . And Mark a place in my reading like I would when reading anything else. This a a reading/interactive site. It's very rude of you to assume people are just being rude or lazy. But you know what? Each to their own and all that. I think it's a silly thing to get riled up over. Even sillier to start a thread over. But then I am silly for commenting on said silly thread Grin

Off to start a thread about a thread about a thread.......

LongWayRound · 14/08/2011 11:19

Saul - thanks for explaining TIO.
Why is it easier to use "I'm On" than "I'm Watching"? They sit right next to each other on the screen. And clicking "Watch This Thread" has to be simpler than posting a blank message?

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 11:20

My threads I'm watching contains a thread about extended bfing and a cheesecake recipe thread.

That about sums me up tbh. Both from several years ago.

ZZZenAgain · 14/08/2011 11:20

it's not easier, it is just people don't usually click on the threads I'm watching facility as much as TIO

belgo · 14/08/2011 11:21

TIO is far easier to use then TIW because TIO is limited to three or four days, and updates the most recently posted on threads.

takeonboard · 14/08/2011 11:21

I know which thread you mean, it made me feel uncomfortable too, a bit voyeuristic I thought. I am glad to read that you and so many others agree that this is rude as I often think I am over-sensetive or too uptight because things like this bother me.

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 11:22

I just don't use TIW. Never have. It's about useability I suspect. I tend to be participating in something or not, I'm not a lurker. I think the majority probably use MN the same way or with the advent of bookmarks on 'new' they perhaps use that instead.

ZZZenAgain · 14/08/2011 11:23

seen some very good cheesecake recipes on MN, always worth watching IMO

plupervert · 14/08/2011 11:24

What a good thread to have started. I agree completely.

belgo · 14/08/2011 11:25

Saulgood - interesting point - TIW is probably used by lurkers, people who never post (and I suspect that there are a lot of people who read and never post mainly DM journalists); whereas 'marking my place and '.' are used by people like Lissie who actually post quite a lot.

worraliberty · 14/08/2011 11:28

But every single person here is 'voyeuristic' Confused

NevermindtheNargles · 14/08/2011 11:38

It's interesting that that particular thread made you think of it. I found the thread this morning. Although I was worried for the op, it was too late to offer any advice as the situation would have resolved itself by the time I got to it. I actually considered putting a . But I thought it would be inappropriate.

I think it's up to you if you do it, but you should be aware that some people will think it rude and decide accordingly.

SardineQueen · 14/08/2011 11:38

I don't think the people posting in gardening, pets of general chat thread are voyeuristic!

CurrySpice · 14/08/2011 11:39

Ithink it is rude. Even if you don't intend it to be rude, it is.

SardineQueen · 14/08/2011 11:39

Believe it or not there are many people who are here for conversation rather than voyeurism. To talk about politics. Or fish. Or baby names. Not to goggle at other people's problems.

LadyFlumpalot · 14/08/2011 11:40

And now I feel like a complete bitch for posting my last on that thread when "rubbernecking" was not my intention.

BatmanLovesRobin · 14/08/2011 11:48

What I like about the TES site is the 'Add to Favourites' button. You click it when you are on a thread you are interested in, then the thread title appears in a column on the right of the screen. Any new replies are numbered in brackets after the thread title, so you can see if it is worth opening again. You click on the thread title and it takes you straight to where you were last time.

This is the ting I like most about TES, and really wish they would implement a similar idea on Mumsnet (which makes me laugh more Grin)

BatmanLovesRobin · 14/08/2011 11:49

'thing', not 'ting'.

I am not Rastamouse's sock Grin

usualsuspect · 14/08/2011 11:49

If you post your problems on a public forum ,people are going to goggle at them
