An establishment like 'Hooters' is pathetic and wrong?

OP posts:

Oh good god Bimbo. Care away. But I find your level of sexism annoying and I find your need to judge other womens choices unhelpful. I believe that women should have free choices and equal rights. Its a shame you don't.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:37

Encouraging the sexualisation/objectification of women in an everyday kind of situation, people KNOW that pole dancing/brothels etc are about naked woman and selling sex but this is just passed off as 'harmless fun'

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:38

Is there a problem with "naked women"?

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:39

Im not judging other womens choices, but i'd rather it not be a 'choice' that someone who needs a job also needs to be slim young and attractive and wearing skimpy clothing to earn a living as a 'waitress'. They are waitressing NOT stripping so why do they need to dress in revealing clothing?

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:39

And I owuld prefer to have the freedom and choice to use my bosy to make money if I wish to. Stop trying to limit my freedoms based on your own views. You don't get to dictate WHAT I do with my body anymore than a man should.

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:40

would and body obvioulsy.

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:40

So you are not judging other womens choices, you just would rather they didn't have that choice at all Bimbo? No that doesn't work really does it.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:41

Nor do you get to dicate how everybody else should feel about that choice sadly.

OP posts:
BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:41

Did you not read what I wrote properly? Guess not Catgirl.

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:43

You can feel how you want. You are perfectly entitled to hold whatever view you like. But do avoid calling youself a feminist as I find it offensive when you say you wish to limit womens choices based on your own views.

To me you saying you wish women did not have the choice to work in Hooters as you believe it is damaging to society is no different from a pro-lifer saying they wish women did not have the right to chose to have an abortion as they believe abortion is damaging to society.

You can hold that view, so can the pro-lifer. You both have the same right to it, but I would struggle to see the feminism in either of your views.

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 12:43

Yes yes im sure the women really appreciate the skimpy outfits and tan in a can look

Yes of course. If they didn't, why would they bother to go there?

I think at best your attitude is extremely old fashioned and narrow minded and at worst, it's quite oppressive to women who choose to do as they see fit with their own lives.

BelleDameSansMerci · 07/08/2011 12:46

There was a point made by Lockets earlier in the thread wondering if the same people who complain about breastfeeding might also frequent Hooters. I'd suggest that places like Hooters and the objectifcation of women, and the breast in particular, are what lead people to feel uncomfortable about seeing breasts outside of a sexual context...

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:47

I do believe they have the right to choose to work they, and men. I do believe they shouldn't have to wear revealing outfits to make them pleasing to the eye. Huge difference there really isn't there?

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:48

It would rather defeat the point of Hooters if they didn't wear the revealing uniform. There are plenty of normal waitressing jobs.

Whatmeworry · 07/08/2011 12:49

Bimbo you are making no sense at all - there are women spraying on orange tans and getting their tits out for all sorts of reasons up and down the land, why pick on Hooters?

( PS am amused at Hooters in Bristol )

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 12:51

That's like applying to work at Asda and refusing to wear a green uniform.

If you apply to work at Hooters, it's because you want to wear a revealing outfit and have some fun.

If you don't, there are 1000s of other places to waitress at. Hooters only has a few outlets in the UK.

I really wouldn't spend time making cat's bum faces at pretty young women who want to work there and dress like that.

SoupDragon · 07/08/2011 12:53

So you're OK about pole dancing and brothels but not Hooters? Confused

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:53

Thats their choice. But in a place of employment why the fuck is it acceptable to be a condition of employment? Why should it be acceptable for a company to say 'we only employ women who are pretty little objects for people to look at'.Like I say what if people didnt want to employ someone in wheelchairs or with disfigurements because it wouldnt fit the company image- is that okay too?

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 07/08/2011 12:55

I do believe they shouldn't have to wear revealing outfits to make them pleasing to the eye.

They dont have to, because nobody is forced to work there. Do you not realise that the girls in Hooters work there because they WANT to. They enjoy the attention, so they apply to Hooters because it is their CHOICE.

Just as, you have the choice not to go into the place, but you do not have the right to choose for anyone else.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:55

EXACTLY- thats the POINT of hooters and thats what I object to. Not whether people want to work there or whatever.
Yes lap dancing clubs, brothels, everyone knows they are selling sex (and they are not family establishments either- they are for ADULTS who know what they are all about). Not something thinly veiled as a bit of fun but all about sexualising women.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/08/2011 12:56

How about Abercrombie and Fitch. Don't they only employ good looking staff (male and female)

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 12:57

Because if Hooters employed a bunch of plain Janes/flat chested women/obese women/ugly women....it would totally defeat the point of Hooters.

Can you not see that? Confused

Hooters is about pretty waitresses with nice bodies It's not about your average looking woman on the street.

The same applies to catwalk models and male and female models in general.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 12:57

Yes and thats why I dislike the concept FFS!

OP posts:
BrawToken · 07/08/2011 12:58

I used to wear revealing clothes and work in bars. I wish I hadn't been objectified, patronised, leered over and, on numerous occasions, assaulted) in such a way. It definitely affected the way I saw myself and that someone had taken me in hand and explained feminism and womens' issues to me like I am doing with my teenage daughter. She may well go on to disregard entirely my advice, but she has at least heard it.

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 12:59

Oh well done soup. I forgot about Abercrombie - excellent example. I have always wanted to go in one for a bit of a perv. Blush
