An establishment like 'Hooters' is pathetic and wrong?

BrawToken · 07/08/2011 19:37

Bollocks supply and demand. Surely we all know capitalism is a flawed system where someone always ends up being exploited? Usually a woman.

neuroticmumof3 · 07/08/2011 19:38

I don't understand how they can legally advertise or restrict the serving jobs for women only. I thought only certain jobs, like refuge workers, were exempt from the anti discrimination legislation.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 19:39

yep I do- objectifying women. But you know thats fine- when men wolf whistle women who walk down the street with their children or yell 'look at the ass on that' out of their white vans its all well and good because as long as those who CHOOSE to objectify themselves it will never ever affect anybody else right?

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 19:39

Not if it is a "Bona Fide Occuaptional Qualification" *neurotic, which is how they get round it. Same as a male clothing manufacturer can advertise far male models only.

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/08/2011 19:41

worraliberty "So you don't judge those who dress in a provocative manner and enjoy being looked at....but you do judge those who enjoy looking at them?
"
Yup. The workers accept money to be treated in a disrespectful way by the customers. The customers pay money to disrespect the workers. These situations are very different.

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 19:41

Braw of course it's supply and demand.

The staff want to dress provocatively and show themselves off

The customers want to see what they show off

That really is supply and demand

One simply wouldn't work without the other...well not in the free world anyway.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 19:42

But they are NOT models they are minimum sodding wage waitresses.

OP posts:
worraliberty · 07/08/2011 19:45

And have you been to Hooters and seen this disrespect you talk of Essential or is it all guess work on your part?

And how are the situations different? There are only a tiny handful of Hooters establishments in the UK....yet there are literally 1000's of waitressing jobs in normal bars and restaurants.

If the ladies are happier working for Hooters than in any other restaurant, why shouldn't they be allowed to enjoy it without people assuming they're being disrespected in some way?

It's all about open minds and freedom of choice imo. There are some very narrow minded women around who quite frankly, do less for a woman's freedom of choice than a lot of men do.

Live and let live Smile

worraliberty · 07/08/2011 19:46

But they are NOT models they are minimum sodding wage waitresses

I think you'll find most waitresses are on a minimum wage? Confused

I would imagine they earn a lot more in the way of tips in Hooters though.

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 19:46

Yes because women who get all excited about men ogling their body and paying them tips judged on how much they fancy them do so much for womankind don't they?

OP posts:
BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 19:48

Which is even more insulting. You have to be slim, look good in a skimpy outfit grin and be happy with the lecherous men who are eyeing up your tits and ass- ohh and another perk of the job is we pay minimum wage!

OP posts:
EssentialFattyAcid · 07/08/2011 19:50

worraliberty are you ok with the idea of blokes ogling and leering at your 13 year old child's breasts and making sexual comments that make her feel uncomfortable? Or should she learn to feel good about it perhaps?

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 19:51

I think paedophillia is a slighty different issue EFA?

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/08/2011 19:52

13 year olds often have the bodies of adults and not of a child

catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 19:56

Oh well that makes it ok then? Hmm I really think you are trying to make a point in a very tasteless way

spout · 07/08/2011 19:56

so it's not themed around owls? Confused

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/08/2011 19:57

I think it is naiive to imagine that the existence of Hooters does not fuel unwanted sexual comments to thirteen year old girls

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 19:57

PMSL Spout. Of course its all about the owls. The waitresses wear the tight clothing as it emphasises their likeness to owls!

OP posts:
EssentialFattyAcid · 07/08/2011 19:59

They have to be short sighted and clever but have good night vision to get jobs which is somewhat discriminatory

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 20:00

I wouldnt want my 13 year old daughter or son to go to such a place with their friends for instance and believe the level of sexualisation in the workforce is normal. Imagine your children thinking wow I cant wait til I can get a job here- first I need to start losing weight, getting the tangerine dream on and making my face up. And THEN it will be great because all these men in here who are obviously ONLY interested in the wings (which no other restaurant serves of course) will look at me approvingly!

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 20:00

I think it is horrendous to suppose that if a man admires the breasts of an adult woman he will then somehow beome lose the ability to distinguish between an adult and child. What a disgusting and offensive thing to say. If I have a perv over David Gandy, am I then in danger of hanging around scout clubs and shouting sexual abuse at 13 year old boys.

Disgusting EFA you should be ashamed of yourself

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/08/2011 20:02

Thirteen year olds often look like eighteen year olds, I wouldn't expect men to necessarily spot the difference in many cases

BimboNo5 · 07/08/2011 20:04

I was as developed as I am now at 13, and looked far older. I did get sexual comments from men is cars etc as they hadnt got a clue how old I was. But thats all well and good as some women are happy to have their norks and ass ogled so its empowering right?

OP posts:
catgirl1976 · 07/08/2011 20:04

Would you not? Well it certainly wouldn't be a denfense in court EFA, nor should it be. "Oh she looked 18 your honour". Not going to wash really, but if you think it should.... Hmm

Alsdo - just becasue a man might enjoy going to Hooters does not mean he would think it appropriate to shout sexual abuse at anyone in the street, regardless of how old they look.

EssentialFattyAcid · 07/08/2011 20:06

Aaah, so men know its OK to letch in hooters, but not in the street, because they worry that they may have misjudged the age of the woman concerned?
