AIBU to think colouring a childs hair is a bit ugh?

An old school friend has posted pictures on fb of her colouring her blonde daughters hair bright red with proper permanent dye. Child is 7. Everyone is commenting, saying "it looks fab". I dye my own hair, it's harmless as far as I know, but is it ok to do a 7 year olds?? I really don't know now. But then I'm very tired and it's none of my business so I guess this is a bit pointless really.

i don't think it's appropriate at 7, kids usually have sensitive scalps & are more prone to reactions.
but, people will do whatever they want with their own kids.

not appropraite, I have been really tempted to spray some sun in in dd's hair but told myself how eugh and wrong it was. (they would look cute with surfer style blond bits though.)

Is it harmless? I thought it ruined your hair over time.

There's a lad in DD's year 1 class with dyed hair (bleached or highlights or something) - I feel sorry for him tbh.
Like in some way, he can never match up to his mum's idea of how he should look.

There are some things that you can do when you are a grown up. And dyeing your hair is one of them. You want to tie a 7 year old into permanently dyeing her roots every 4 weeks or looking god-awful while it grows out? Ick.

I say this with pillarbox red hair BTW.

Children are cutest when left as nature intended. They do not need beautifying in any way and that includes hair dyes and piercings. It's nasty, tacky and yuck!

YANBU. That's pretty grim. Just fail to understand why anyone would do that.

dita please don't use Sun In, it's terrible stuff and wrecks your hair!

I would judge and think that someone who died their 7 year old kid's hair was a completely stupid MORON.

My gran put sun in on my hair when I was about 5 . I can't remember what my natural colour is (I carried on dyeing it).

And the way to get surfer-style blonde highlights is to get your children outside doing lots of watersports!

I wasn't allowed to dye my hair until I was 14 (with henna), but I haven't stopped since! I think any younger is a bit of a no no.

YANBU My daughter is 14 and we were told by the hairdresser to not put anything permanent on until at least age 16, so when we do put colours on we make sure they have no amonia and wash out after about 8 weeks

Maryz - I would love to know the outcome of that too!!

YANBU. I started dying my hair when I was early teens, as a matter or routine from 15 onwards, as well as using product and hairspray and everything else. My hair started falling out a couple of years later (when I was still a teenager!) It thinned out horribly and I used to panic whenever I looked at the pillow or brushed my hair and saw all of the long hairs that had come out.

I don't know what did the most damage but I think using dye, hairspray and straighteners all at once taxed it too much. I imagine some people can do it and their hair will be fine, but mine sure wasn't.

I think the wash in wash out dyes are ok for the kids maybe in the summer holidays. Maybe do some silly colours because why not, no different to sparkly nail polish at that age IMO.

I let dd1 use Fudge Colour Box occassionally. She is 8, it washes out after about 3 washes usually.No way would I let use permanent dyes.

I let my 9yo DD spray her hair bright green at a festival last week; but it was wash out jokey stuff.

Permenant dye is YUCK on children.

DD coloured her hair with shaders and toners crap when she was about 10.

She then started dyeing it all different colours when she was 14, using semi permanent colours. Then she died it bloody BLUE BLACK one day with permanent when I was out. She regretted it hugely and is only back to a decent natural colour (blondey brown) 18 months later.

I used to use loads of those toners when I was about 14/15 and coloured mousses

Wow, 18 months to grow the colour out! My daughter keeps saying stuff like 'people keep saying black would suit me....' She has pale skin and I think it would look terrible! I shall tell her of that GetOrfMoiSamsungFridgeFreezer!

modern hair colours do NOT ruin hair so i really do not see what the problem is.

what each parent chooses to allow their child to do is surely up to them (within reason - obviously not talking about young weird piercings or tattoo's).

Yes cheer - that is irresponsible imo.

Purple really try and discourage black hair dye. It looks ghastly once it starts to grow out, and you quite simply cannot dye over the top. DD ended up getting shedloads of peroxide put on by a hairdresser (2 appointments at a cost of £130 each) to get rid of the black. And her hair was knackered after that. She had to have her hair cut short (and she used to have a timotei mane). I think also (don't quote me) that the chemicals used in black hair dye are potentially carcinogenic.
