We got the exam results in Scotland today, and whilst my son has passed two out of three highers ........they are C grades.

I'm dissapointed because he is really clever and A's were predicted but he got a girlfriend and a new xbox game and really didn't take it seriously.

With the current economic climate is there any hope for someone with two C's given the competition for jobs.

AIBU to feel extremely worried for his future ???

please someone tell there son only had one C and is now thriving indepently with his own flat/house......career, wife and kids

that's a really good point rubyx

I think i am lucky in the fact my son isn't running about being a twat and trying to kill people or get himself into fights or taking drugs

I'm worrying about his exam results but at least he went to school

How about he spends a year working with his uncle and takes it as a time to find out what he wants from life? 17 is still terribly young, and it's not that surprising that he's not worked as hard as he could on his exams at this age.

clearing

I doubt they will take the paper issue into account - after all if he managed to get As in his prelims then he was obviously able to deal with it then. OTOH since he got As in his prelims he may be able to get his results upped a bit on appeal - the school may do this automatically or he may have to ask them to do it. Get him to get in touch with the school, or do it yourself, to see if you need to take any action to make this happen.

I failed my Higher English, and got a "Compensatory O grade" for it - not sure if that means it was a "just-failed" mark or what - but because I'd got an A in my prelim, the school automatically appealed it and I got a C pass. (In fact the fail/scrape a pass was a fairer result than the A - I must have had the wind behind me on prelim day!)

If the issue with paper gives him problems with books as well as exams, then I think he needs to seriously consider doing something practical with his life instead of academic qualifications. If it is just the exam, colleges and universities (and schools if it had been raised earlier) might be able to make alternative arrangements. But if it affects his reading books and making notes then I think he'd have to put a huge amount of extra effort in to find ways to deal with it.

Do you understand about clearing now? - as mentioned before it's a "sale of leftover places" - he would need to pick a course that has places, and phone up the institution to ask if they will consider him. But before he does that, I think a call to find out if he has any realistic chances with 2 Cs would be a good idea, rather than put alot of effort into choosing courses and repeatedly being told his results just won't do.

But before that, he needs to think if university is the right place for him!

A plumber is not a bad choice. It keeps him away from paper, at least.

If he has an adversion for paper, wont even read a newspaper, I really dont understand how any of you thought he was cut out for Uni or an academic career?

Or are all library collections and reading material already downloadable into Ipads and Kindles these days? (Id love to catch up on my Plato on the bus)

QuintessentialShadow · 08/08/2011 10:03

I meant, in original.

Oh God, you sound like my OH. He was horrified when he visited the local Uni library and found shelves of literature in translation for language students.
He's the sort of man that discounts those 100 must read book lists if they recommend literature not in the original. Smile

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 08/08/2011 10:13

Can Kindle cope with other languages?
Spanish, Latin?
What about Cyrillic and Mandarin?
That's going to bother me now. Smile

He needs to try to come up with a plan, if he's in the right frame of mind for it. If you went on to this clearing website he could get an idea of the sort of courses that might appeal to him where there are vacancies for this year. Then contact the college direct.

Or he could decide to get a job and earn money for a year. See where that takes him.

If he doesn't want to make a plan and he just fannies about saying he doesn't know what he wants to do, then it's hard. You can't make him.

I know I'd end up saying 'study or make money!' but I'd try some gentle encouragement first.

well the one he failed is being investigated.

His school were already on it on his behalf!!!! His teacher thinks it's likely he's forgotten to write to his name and number on the paper (he can be a dozy twunt at times)
