How are you these days?

gomummygo · 04/01/2012 22:48

Just got the mail, thank you for the card Cheerful! :) Love the photo. DH was Shock @ how much he thought our DSs looked alike!

Teaandcakeplease · 04/01/2012 23:08

That'll be our errant DNA strand, GoMummy. :)

Oh Tea, 3 is a big age isn't it! It was Definitely Not A Baby anymore in my book. Bittersweet...but such a fun age too. I hope it's a lovely day!

Teaandcakeplease · 05/01/2012 06:52

Happy Birthday to your ds Tea, hope he had a lovely day Smile

So do you like the berry then Gomummy, might start saving for an iPad now Grin. Everything is okay this end, except we are discussing moving again, my nice neighbour is moving Sad, so we may not renew the tenancy, I have never really liked the area the house is fab cos of the size and I love having an ensuite, so I have to search for another that's similar Smile, might look in your area Tea, well Watford way that is, or we could go Valiums way or even further Grin we just like a change of scenery, that is until we find somewhere we feel comfortable with and properly settled, as it does not help that our next door neighbours are awful, trying to cause trouble for us, bloody idiots. Oh well I don't really let things like that bother me, which I have told them, so they can bugger orf Grin

gomummygo · 05/01/2012 18:03

Actually I don't really like the berries, tbh, Tiredmum, but always easier to use what everyone else around is using, iykwim. Considering moving again!? I bow down to you, taking that on with 3 boys in tow!

Debated posting this in case it bothers anyone but I am SO INCREDIBLY PROUD of this young mum that I was in tears watching this!!!! Please ignore if anyone finds offensive.

mum shoots intruder

CheerfulYank · 05/01/2012 18:34

You only have to come as far as Minnesota, GoMummy. :) We can do the same here.

She's just a kid and lost her husband on Christmas day, the poor girl.

CheerfulYank · 05/01/2012 18:40

My Grandpa (a cowboy at heart) always said it's better to be tried by 12 men than carried by six. And that it's wonderful to be a peaceful, nonviolent person, but if it's kill or be killed, stand your f*ckin' ground.

Ah, I miss him. :)

gomummygo · 05/01/2012 19:17

I have always loved that quote, Cheerful. Your Grandpa was a very smart man.

And I have tremendous respect for your laws (don't know if it's state or federal Blush). Glad to know I'd only have to go that far though, don't know if I could take the heat in Oklahoma long term. Plus my accent wouldn't stand out as much in Minnesota. Grin

Yes I think she is an amazing girl actually, especially for keeping calm enough to aim properly and even thinking to give her baby a bottle. Wow. All that and just lost her husband on Christmas. Amazing girl, I say.

CheerfulYank · 05/01/2012 19:23

Though I would like to know what she was doing dating a man in his 50's when she was 14, which some sources are saying is the case. Hmm

I have always been raised around guns (we never had them but my grandfathers did) and am not afraid of them. I understand the anti-gun position but I just don't think it would work. And in Minnesota hunting is a big part of our culture and part of the "we do for ourselves" mentality that we are so proud of. A lot of people make it through the year within their food budget because neighbors share their game and garden produce.

CheerfulYank · 05/01/2012 19:26

I think here you might have to say that you have a gun and are prepared to use deadly force if necessary. Which I would do anyway, I've got no desire to shoot anyone. Ever. But if it came down to it...

Tiredmumno1 · 05/01/2012 23:41

???? just testing something else out, feel free to ignore.

gomummygo · 06/01/2012 04:12

I was also raised around guns, though they were primarily for farm use & hunting. As a child I was taught respect for them and how to use them properly - they were important and valuable tools.

I don't hide the fact that as an adult, I became trained, licensed, legal, registered and authorized to use these tools. And I had to jump through unbelievable hoops for it.

I always say I invite anyone else who has also had to throw their dinner at a bear to argue the merits of guns with me. Grin

I certainly would never want to have to shoot a person, as I'm sure that poor girl in the news didn't. But if it was my family vs. someone breaking into my house with a 12" buck knife.....

CheerfulYank · 06/01/2012 04:19

Hey you! Still awake? Are you earlier than I am or later...I always forget. It's quarter after 10 here. :)

I think the main thing with us (America) is, it's only been a few hundred years since we gave the big "eff you" to the UK. (Sorry, guys :o) The founding fathers didn't want anything like a monarchy or anything that would infringe on someone's personal freedom. (As long as that person was a white man, anyway, but you get the point Angry) And guns were a part of that...they wanted everyone to have the right to take up arms in defense of themselves against anyone they saw necessary, including the government. So...basically our guns are England's fault. Wink

Tiredmumno1 · 06/01/2012 09:02

Shock @ giving the uk the big "eff off". Grin

CheerfulYank · 06/01/2012 09:05

You can keep your damn tea and taxes. :o :o

valiumredhead · 06/01/2012 10:05

Hello! I am back on line. We bought a new computer and it took forever to transfer data. It's lovely and swanky though, I'm drooling over it! Grin

How's everyone? :)

gomummygo · 06/01/2012 18:56

I think I am two hours ahead of you Cheerful, it was about midnight when I made my last post. I am usually up until about midnight. DS gets up anywhere between 5 and 6, so if it's any later than that I'm a zombie the next day.

I have tremendous respect for the American approach to personal freedom. Especially with respect to self defense; massive Envy @ "the right to bear arms," which we are constantly reminded that we do not have. I think a big part of our challenges stem from our odd geographic/demographic situation. Most of the country doesn't actually live in the few major cities that we have - but that seems to be where all the laws are designed for, iykwim.

(Oh and I think our miserable taxes are as bad as in the UK, but without the social programs that they have. Confused Perhaps it all goes to snowplowing. Grin) I was approached by American headhunters a few times, and though the salary wasn't actually that much greater than I made, I would have taken home about 27% more of it!!! Shock

Congrats on the new computer Valium. Getting everything transferred can be such a pain! Hope you got it all.

Tiredmumno1 · 06/01/2012 19:18

Grrrrrr

Oi cheerful leave our tea alone Grin

Hi Valium ooo another new gadget joins the bench Grin I hope you are enjoying it Smile

CheerfulYank · 06/01/2012 19:19

I do love tea :o

I was actually going to have some and realized we were out of sugar. Blast!

CheerfulYank · 06/01/2012 19:21

I love Google Earth! I saw Tea's house once. :)

You can't get far enough to see mine, but you can see an overview of the town.

PigletJohn · 06/01/2012 19:36

"I have tremendous respect for the American approach to personal freedom. Especially with respect to self defense; massive @ "the right to bear arms," which we are constantly reminded that we do not have."

It is worth remembering that homicide rates in the USA are about five times as high as in the UK.

Murders by being hit on the head with a frying pan, or drowned in the bath, are fairly similar rates, the difference is overwhelmingly because murders by guns are vastly higher.

There is a view that humans (like all other animals) are genetically programmed not to kill their own kind. For example, it is quite difficult to train soldiers or policemen to kill. However a gun makes it very much easier than, for example, strangling someone with your bare hands, and the ready availability of guns does make it very much easier to kill people.
