JemimaMuddledUp · 03/08/2011 11:30

New official prom clip for the 4 Georges

helenovtroy · 03/08/2011 12:49

Dashing costumes, really actually funny, and frequently half-naked foxy men?

There hasn't been anything this, um, interesting on Childrens BBC since Chris Packham's cycling shorts.

I am slightly addicted to watching the songs on the red button Sad

KimberlyClark · 03/08/2011 13:41

i can do the dance to stupid deaths

i do it in public and sing really loudly

dd2 is only 5 and even she runs to clap her hands over my mouth before i get to "...hope next time it's not you - hoohoooo "

LOVE IT

KimberlyClark · 03/08/2011 13:41

isn't dick turpin deano from gavin and stacey

my gawd he is funny

paulapantsdown · 03/08/2011 14:50

I think HH is the best written comedy on telly - MUCH funnier than any adult programs.

Raahh · 03/08/2011 14:58

I love HH- my favourite song is def - do the Pachacuti ...will be singing that all day....

and my favourite sketch is the description of why the first world war started- very, very clever!Grin

Twit · 03/08/2011 15:03

I'm so glad I have found you all, agree we need to be able to ipod it and there is something slightly moreish about a couple of them. We have them all recorded on skyplus and they frequently trotted out when I'm bored for rainy days.
Not good they didn't see the fans though.

Banana.

carriedababi · 03/08/2011 15:42

i've never seen this, what station is it on?

Twit · 03/08/2011 15:45

BBC1/CBBC

Tonksthecat · 03/08/2011 17:37

apparently the Prom coming out on CBBC / BBC one "towards the end of August"

Tonksthecat · 03/08/2011 17:43

oh so great to find some like-minded folk.. poeple next to us in the Prom queue weren't real fans Wink
Did you notice in the 4 Georges they tweaked George 2's words so it didn't sound like the wrong one died of dirrhoea? And the girlie whistles when Matt did the lip bite thing? (can hear on that Georges link, thanks Jemima!)

How about the series 3 songs..even Richard 3 gets in your head...

MavisGrind · 03/08/2011 18:01

Tonks I have been trying to avoid posting too much on this thread as it rather outs me as a huge saddo fan. I currently have time on my hands and access to Youtube so what's not to like!

I was teaching a Yr5/6 class and reward was HH songs (particulary 'Literally) with special mention to those children who could name the British monarchs in order.....

NorfolkNChance · 03/08/2011 18:14

I melted at Matt's lip thing

Tonksthecat · 03/08/2011 19:33

Mavis ha ha - William William Henry Stephen, Henry Richard John (oi) ... that's what wins over the suspicious older relatives to HH's educational value (Grandma thought that Balckbeard glorified violence -sigh-only tried her cos she likes Gilbert and Sullivan.. but it doesn't stop ds and dd being word perfect)

Norfolk wonder if your melting extended to wolf-whistling?? I think it's the wink first that sets it off..
Btw we too erm managed to concoct a cd of the songs via a bit of lifting sounds from youtube (ahem, your honour) but only cos they weren't available by other means - will of course buy the real thing when it comes out.

kayb123 · 03/08/2011 19:41

great stuff, all the family love it.

edam · 03/08/2011 20:28

yeah, I get slightly irritated by William William Henry Stephen. It SHOULD be 'Stephen or Matilda' or even 'Matilda, Stephen, Matilda, Stephen (repeat a few more times) Henry'.

But typical of history books to leave Matilda (Maud) out. She was just as much Queen as Stephen was King.

NorfolkNChance · 03/08/2011 20:46

Ohhh the wink

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 03/08/2011 21:32

We made it to page two, and Discussions of the Day!Grin

Dare we think we have a likeminded soul somewhere at MNHQ? If so, please out yourself, and state your favourite tuneWink

OP posts:
oooggs · 03/08/2011 21:35

oi Wink I think our 2 year old shouts that bit in the right place louder than the older 3 Grin

Erebus · 03/08/2011 22:39

We-e-ll...

Page 5 and... DISSENT.

I find HH all over the place historically, rather inaccurate, all singing, all dancing and bugger the time-line- and SO 'Easee Histree for the Masses', it isn't funny.

Yes, my DSs watch it but they could no more tell you where the Romans arrived, before or after the Vikings than place The Georgians in time.... IF I allowed them to consider HH to be any more worthy than Scooby Doo, educationally. Sure, they could chant some catchy tune, I might remark on the placement of an actor's codpiece etc but if we think we are advancing our DC's education in History, we are as deluded as the Home Edder who considers weighing out a bit of flour as tantamount to 'Maths: covered'.

FWIW a very good friend of mine is devastated that her unwell DS was unable to take up an invite to the Albert Hall thing as a guest of Someone Very Big in the making/producing of HH... BUT the bloke's son and my friend's son attend a selective prep where such vox pop nonsense would not be entertained as bearing any true relevance to the teaching of actual History.

He who does not learn the lessons of history is doomed to repeat it.

We ought to offer our DCs better.

edam · 03/08/2011 22:56

erebus, I think the idea that children shouldn't have a bit of fun with history is quite depressing. No-one is claiming Horrible Histories is the equivalent of a Master's, or even a GSCE. They are saying it is entertaining and may inspire children to feel more well disposed towards history as a subject.

And you might want to check that link to the HH version of the causes of WW1, which I think is reasonably accurate.

MavisGrind · 03/08/2011 23:25

Erebus - I have a degree in history and I am a teacher. I, in no way, think that HH is a substitute for a thorough teaching of British or World history - however I do see that it ignites an interest in history in children which was sadly lacking when I was a child and a history nerd.

Think of HH more as comedy with a historical slant than any supposed gospel.

And anyway, it's chock full of fit men.

JemimaMuddledUp · 03/08/2011 23:34

I don't think anyone is saying that it is 100% accurate or a substitute for proper history teaching in schools!

But just as twaddle books like Rainbow Faries and Beast Quest can help to children get interested in reading, a few silly songs can help children get interested in history.

My 7 year old is actually turning into a bit of a history geek, he enjoys sitting in reconstructed iron age round houses and identifying roman coins. Give him a wicker man to burn accompanied by an animal skin drum and he is a happy bunny. He doesn't actually think that stone age man invited the neanderthals round for a dinner party, or that the romand sang a version of high school musical. But it doesn't stop him enjoying the books and TV series!
