in thinking that the film BRIDESMAIDS is totally unfunny and misogynistic

perpetuating the idea that women are all jealous and competitive even when it comes to their best friends. every character is a really nasty stereotype except for the policeman and the 'funny' bits, i.e. when she's trying to get his attention by driving while on the phone etc etc are just lame. i loved knocked up and the 40 year old virgin but this left a bad taste in my mouth. she's such an unsympathetic character with nothing likeable about her. two thumbs down from me.

Sorry, have to disagree.

One of the funniest films I have ever seen. Yes there are stereotypes but I saw a little bit of alot of women I know in some of those characters.

yabu

timidviper · 17/07/2011 23:59

I haven't seen it yet but DD (aged 20) and her friends all tell me it is the funniest film ever and I really should see it so they wouldn't agree with you!

freeandhappy · 18/07/2011 00:05

horrible portrayal of women, really self hating imho

Curiousmama · 18/07/2011 00:08

I loved it so yabu. Agree with girly you do recognise traits. I howled at the engagement speech Grin

ZacharyQuack · 18/07/2011 00:12

I loved it, and thought Knocked Up was fairly woman-hating, so there you go.....

seasalt · 18/07/2011 00:18

yabu, it is hilarious.

ifancyashandy · 18/07/2011 00:28

What the others said! Loved it, laughed loads, saw myself others in the women and loved the a) main character and b) the sister of the groom.

Would see it again!

freeandhappy · 18/07/2011 00:28

gawd...women as neurotic, envious, selfish and bitchy=hilariousConfused

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 18/07/2011 00:32

Haven't seen it, but was told by a 20 yo male acquaintance that it's not funny.

Not even for old farts like me.

HowlingBitch · 18/07/2011 00:35

Neurotic, envious, selfish and bitchy

Aren't we all of these at one point or another, Male or female? DP can be wonderfully bitchy!

musicposy · 18/07/2011 01:16

Oh, I loved it! I went with my sister and eldest DD (15) and we were laughing throughout the rest of the night. DD, sat beside me, was just in stitches of laughter from start to finish. She is now the envy of all her 14 year old friends who couldn't get in Grin.

Sorry, but I'd have to disagree, OP. It was brilliant. Not to be taken too seriously, but brilliant. I think the neurotic, bitchy bit is all part of it being funny IMO.

ZacharyQuack · 18/07/2011 01:54

"women as neurotic, envious, selfish and bitchy=hilarious"

Were you not paying attention when you watched Knocked Up?? Confused

I liked Bridesmaids and didn't find it or Knocked Up particularly misogynistic.

hairfullofsnakes · 18/07/2011 05:53

You thought bridesmaids was misogynistic but knocked up was not?! Me thinks you have the films the wrong way round?!

Chris o Dowd... Yum!

CheerfulYank · 18/07/2011 07:30

Chris O'Dowd was great. "I got a special dispensation...because I'm so strong and tough." :)

EssentialFattyAcid · 18/07/2011 07:39

Loved this film and didn't find it mysoginistic

pink4ever · 18/07/2011 08:58

I watched this film at the weekend and was planning a thread myself about how shit it was! It wasnt funny, the characters were all stereotypes and chris o'dowds accent was atrocious!. I was really disapointed as had heard all the good reviews. I actually didnt like knocked up either but at least I laughed at bits of that.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 18/07/2011 09:07

Oh, I'm so curious about this now! In RL people have told me it's great. Must see it.

Domesticbodess · 18/07/2011 09:13

Hadn't thought that deeply about it TBH. Loved it. Only criticism for me that it was unnecessarily rude in places.

fedupwiththisnonsense · 18/07/2011 09:58

off you pop to Feminism then OP, where you are likely to get the answer you really want. Seems that most of us see it for the lighthearted comedy it is.
really fed up with almost everything being 'misogynistic' and patriarchal repressiveness on MN.

cumbria81 · 18/07/2011 10:00

Well I am very intelligent and I enjoyed it. So there

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 18/07/2011 10:02

That's a bit harsh, fedup. The OP was just voicing her opinion. Other people have managed to disagree without being rude and dismissive.

AnyFucker · 18/07/2011 10:03

my 15 yo loved it

say no more Smile
