in thinking that the film BRIDESMAIDS is totally unfunny and misogynistic

perpetuating the idea that women are all jealous and competitive even when it comes to their best friends. every character is a really nasty stereotype except for the policeman and the 'funny' bits, i.e. when she's trying to get his attention by driving while on the phone etc etc are just lame. i loved knocked up and the 40 year old virgin but this left a bad taste in my mouth. she's such an unsympathetic character with nothing likeable about her. two thumbs down from me.

I totally loved this film & I laughed from start to finish. By far the best film I have seen in a long time.

MsChanandlerBong · 18/07/2011 10:09

Eugh I am confused?! What parts do people think were mysoginistic?
I thought it was really funny. Obviously some parts were rather exaggerated, but it is a comedy, so I thought that was for comedy effect. But maybe I missed something whilst giggling to the 'gross out' humour?

Oh and I am also confused about the comparison with Knocked Up... that was written by a man, whereas Bridesmaids was written by two women. Isn't it a bit of an unwritten rule that we can take the piss out of ourselves, but it is a bit of a different matter if others take the piss out of us? (This applies more to minority groups I guess.)

ShatnersBassoon · 18/07/2011 10:12

I loved it. I thought it was quite refreshing to see genuinely funny women characters driving the humour in a film.

freeandhappy · 18/07/2011 10:12

thanks lady. i guess i just couldn't relate to the lead character. why the hell would it give someone a nervous breakdown that their friend is getting married? and if the whole thing gets on your nerves, why would you freak out and get depressed because someone else wants to do the bridesmaid duties. such a weak premise and when she wanted to make it up to her "friend' why didn't she bake her cake? i just didn't buy any of it. the sisters relationship in knocked up was really supportive and real to me, and both women were so funny. and the female lead in 40 yr old virgin was v sympathetic and funny too. anyway i know lots of women hate their own sex Confused and

OP posts:
freeandhappy · 18/07/2011 10:13

the comparison with knocked up and 40 yr old virgin is that they are all three judd apatow films

ShatnersBassoon · 18/07/2011 10:16

Women are arseholes sometimes. That's what made it so funny. There aren't enough arsehole women in films.

BlueFergie · 18/07/2011 10:17

Of course it was stereotyped and exagerated - its called comedy. Thats the whole point of it. If it was all serious, driven career women, sitting around supporting each other it would have been shit.
No matter what a comedy is about it contains exaggeration and stereotype. The Hangover was just the same, but you don't see men getting all po faced at the presentation of men in it.
I recognised kernels of truth in it that were greatly hammed up for comic effect. For example the insecurity of your best friend finding a new 'better' friend. Few of us would have got into the competitive speech making but i understood the feelings behind it.

By the way pink4ever that is actually Chris O'Dowds real accent.

messymammy · 18/07/2011 10:21

Pink4ever, I think the point of Chris O'Dowd's accent was that it was supposed to be crap? It was alluded to a few times during the film that he wasn't from America?

I liked the film, I thought it was good fun and light, and should be taken as such. No, it wasnt groundbreaking film making, did you expect it to be?

MsChanandlerBong · 18/07/2011 10:24

OK hadn't spotted the Apatow connection - sorry!!

I thought she got depressed as she felt like she was losing her best friend as she was getting married, and in effect moving to a different social group (as represented by the Rose Byrne character). This was on top of lots of other things stalling in her life (failed business, losing her much hated job, having to move in with her mum, horrible love life). I think in those circumstances people do freak out... obviously this doesn't always result in them having a fit in a massive chocolate fountain etc etc but that is where the entertainment value comes in.

I don't think that makes her a woman hater, I think it was just that her friend was going through a massive, positive life change at a point where everything turned to crap in her life... with HILARIOUS consequences (because it is an American film where $$$ is king!).

Guess it is a matter of opinion, but imo yabu because I thought it was a great film Smile

MsChanandlerBong · 18/07/2011 10:25

Also, can confirm that was Chris O'Dowds real irish accent!

BlueFergie · 18/07/2011 10:26

Sorry OP x post with your last post.

I had no problem buying the premise of the film. The point was it wasn't the wedding that gave the lead character the nervous breakdown. She was already on the brink of one anyway, it just tipped her over the edge. She had lost her business and been dumped, ended up house sharing with people she didn't like and was in a job she hated. I have known people (men and women) in RL to be driven to nervous breakdown over losing businesses and failing relationships so its not hard to believe that this character was heading that way anyway. On top of all this she is threatened as she sees it by losing her best friend no just through marriage but to another women. Don't think the premise was weak or ridiculous at all. Of course her reactions were surreal and bizarre but like I said thats comedy.

Anyway I loved it.

freeandhappy · 18/07/2011 10:27

er i expected it to be funny. mind you i didnt think the hangover was funny either and everyone else loved tha. i also seemed to be the only one at my film club to think that black swan was the biggest load of bollox ever and gross and boring to boot!

OP posts:
SockMunkee · 18/07/2011 10:31

I saw it on Friday evening and loved it, its really funny.

fedupwiththisnonsense · 18/07/2011 10:37

Not meant to be too harsh, just soooo fed up with people attempting to make the majority of people feel that they are 'letting down women' for enjoying films, taking their husbands name, or generally anything that doesn't agree with all principles of Feminism.
(maybe OTT reaction this morning but very hormonal) Blush

freeandhappy · 18/07/2011 11:18

Well I was looking for opinions fedup! And maybe I am turning into a po faced feminist. Am going to dig out my dungarees and grow my airpit hair out. Will let it drop now. But before I go may I recommend Win/Win? From the same director as The Station Agent. Really lovely life affirming and funny.

OP posts:
KeepingUpWithTheCojones · 18/07/2011 11:34

I thought it was the biggest load of bollocks i've ever seen.

It was so unfunny it was awkward. They took ideas that could have been passibly amusing and stretched them out into way too long excruciating arse-clenchingly unfunny scenes.

Was too busy rolling my eyes and consoling myself with malteasers to notice if it was misogynistic. And i'm sure as hell not watching it again to form an opinion.

capricorn76 · 18/07/2011 12:13

I thought it was ace. I literally laughed until I cried during the engagement speech. Funniest film in ages.

corlan · 18/07/2011 12:25

YABU.
I loved this film. Didn't pick up any misogyny from it at all.

It was such a nice change to see a funny film with women as the main characters.

AnyFucker · 18/07/2011 12:49

KeepingUpWithTheCojones, can I just say that your name is brilliant Grin

strawberry17 · 18/07/2011 12:53

Loved it too.

BaronessOrczy · 18/07/2011 12:54

I thought it was fantastic so YABU Grin. I cried laughing - but I agree with a previous poster, there were points where it was a bit too crude, but overall I loved it.

Mumsnet The world would be a very boring place if we all liked the same things, no?

rockinhippy · 18/07/2011 13:10

YABU - I've only seen clips so far, but enough to get the gist & think its very funny - I personally don't "get" Women like this either - another planet as far as I'm concerned, but I've been on this planet long enough to realise that

A. they do really exist & I personally know/have known many over the years, even if to a lesser degree
B. thats actually what makes the film so funny

freeandhappy · 18/07/2011 13:36

Rockinhippy I think yab a bit unreasonable when you haven't seen the film yet to pronounce it very funny. It Really Isn't. The jokes are wafer thin and as cojones says, dragged out interminably. I honestly think it's a marketing trick. Nobody could watch it twice.

OP posts:
rockinhippy · 18/07/2011 13:40

I meant to put YPBU Blush - but I still stand by it looking very funny & I'm quite looking forward to seeing it - though I don't go to the cinema so often, so not breaking my neck & will happily wait for the DVD/ filmflex - I tend to save Cinema trips for more scenic, fab special effects type films

CurrySpice · 18/07/2011 14:37

OK, we get the message, you didn't like it OP Hmm

I did! :o

And just because some of the characters were unsympathetic, doesn't make it misogynistic imho
