I just don't want their dog here

Pil are coming to visit this weekend. They stay in a hotel as our house is too small to accommodate them.

Mil has this ancient dog that is blind and well, imo, ready to be put down. She wants to bring it with them. It will have to stay with us whilst they are in the hotel.

I don't want the dog here, especially not a disabled one that will probably poo and wee every where. We don't have a garden as it's currently a building site.

If I wanted a dog, I'd get one. I don't so I won't. I've got 3 dcs and that's really enough for me. Plus all the cooking and hospitality for pil this weekend - which of course I don't mind but I think bringing the dog is an imposition.

What!!!

You would if you'd ever met him. He was far more intelligent and affectionate than the average child.

MsPlaced · 18/07/2011 15:20

Well if he's that intelligent I imagine he could get himself out of trouble before #I'd be of any help. I'm not really that bright.

Kladdkaka · 18/07/2011 15:23

CurrySpice I do actually have a butlers' pantry in my house, which is really weird as it's only a 2 bedroomed house that didn't even have a bathroom when we moved in.Confused

CurrySpice · 18/07/2011 15:25

That must be your intrinsic poshness coming out *kladd" Wink

Kladdkaka · 18/07/2011 15:26

Clever cat, stupid cat or un-trained dog? Hmmm. I think I'd try to save the stupid cat first because there's nowt funnier than a stupid cat.

Kladdkaka · 18/07/2011 15:29

Oh my! I've never seen my name and poshness in the same sentence. I wellin up.:o

reelingintheyears · 18/07/2011 15:41

DrunkenDaisy...did your cat wipe it's bum aswell? Grin

And how did it not fall down the loo?

DrunkenDaisy · 18/07/2011 15:45

Hi didn't wipe his bum. I assume he washed it the normal kitty way.

And he didn't fall down the loo because he cleverly squatted himself astride the bowl with his paws on either side of the seat.

reelingintheyears · 18/07/2011 15:50

Did you photograph it?...That's brilliant. Grin

Kladdkaka · 18/07/2011 15:55

reelingintheyears there are lots of videos on youtube of cats that have been trained to use the toilet. They're well funny.

TheLadyHare · 18/07/2011 16:28

My old lab is blind, senile and arthritic, sometimes she gets me up in the middle of the night to wee as her bladder control is not what it was. Yes, she does have the odd accident but that is part and parcel of dog ownership. The joy she exhibits when out on her walks or when she's eating her food with typical labrador gusto, tells me she adores her life just the way it is.

However, I would not leave her somewhere for someone else to look after, unless they offered and I could 100% trust they were dog lovers and aware/accepting of her condition. I owe that to her, she has been a faithful companion for many years. To put her somewhere strange would be confusing enough for her, and if I thought that the people looking after her resented her presence, well I would not put her or them in that situation.

Kennels or a dog hotel would not be an option for her, I had to kennel her once (for 2 days) to attend a funeral. The owner of the kennel ended up taking her into his house with his own pets as she was so distressed. Once there she settled down and slept in the dog/cat huddle beside the aga. I was lucky he was so understanding but I'm aware this was above and beyond normal kennel care.

Winky I hope your MIL's dog has seen the vet today, and that the wee thing is no longer suffering.

Daisy Does your cat ever sprinkle the seat or do you assume it's your DP?

knittedbreast · 18/07/2011 16:32

id say no.

Claw3 · 18/07/2011 16:39

I had a gerbil when i was kid that drowned.

Ambergambler · 18/07/2011 16:40

Have you tried googling to see if there is any pet friendly accommodation near you? It's becoming more popular now, so worth a try. That way they can bring the dog, but you don't have to look after it. HTH

2rebecca · 18/07/2011 16:42

I wouldn't want anyone's dog in my house. If people want to visit me they can put their dog in a kennel or leave it with a friend.

DrunkenDaisy · 18/07/2011 19:41

I never managed to photograph dear Hippy on the toilet as this was the 80s and i didn't have today's gadgetry to hand.

And i tell you he never dribbled ever. He was a surprisingly good aim. I miss my sweet Hippy - he was my best friend and i think of him every day even though he died almost 20 years ago Sad

DrunkenDaisy · 18/07/2011 19:45

OMG that you tube cat is amazing. Thank you Kladdkaka. Hippy used to paw the seat after he finished too. [happy/sad memory emoticon]

Heavymetalmater · 28/07/2011 20:40

Im puzzled. Even if they stay in a hotel with the dog what do you propose they do with it during the day. Surely they will be with you during the day so the dog will be too.

2rebecca · 28/07/2011 20:48

I have no flooring that I would want a dog urinating on. Now the kids are older most of the carpets have been replaced. Thankfully none of my relatives have dogs, we all either work so are out of the house all day or have busy lives and like to go away at weekends.

What happened in the end?

WinkyWinkola · 28/07/2011 21:03

Well, they came for the weekend without the dog. He stayed at his breeder's house as he usually does. Mil was obviously upset over the weekend. Even the gcs couldn't really cheer her up and she kept calling the breeder about him who said he was quiet and not interested in walks or food. I felt sorry for her but was actually glad the dog was not with us because I think the dcs would have been distressed too.

She called last night to say she'd taken him to the vet and he'd been put down. I think she now feels guilty she went away for the weekend and left him (even though he was in good care) or that she didn't have him put down last week.

Just to clarify, they wouldn't rebook into a doggy friendly hotel because they'd lose their bargain booking in Holiday Inn.

I still believe that one should never impose one's pets on anyone.

Dh now wants to get kittens to replace our three cats who died one by one this year at the vet's! I'm not convinced.

Thanks for the update Winky.

Longtime · 31/07/2011 00:57

Sorry to hear he had to be put down but I guess it was the best thing for him really.

DogsBestFriend · 31/07/2011 01:00

Thank you for the update. I feel for your MIL and hope that her dog's passing was a serene one - it clearly was for the best.

You know the answer re the kittens - if all the family aren't in agreement qith having a pet then it shouldn't be undertaken, for the sake of both the animals and the humans.
