I just don't want their dog here

WinkyWinkola · 17/07/2011 11:18

Pil are coming to visit this weekend. They stay in a hotel as our house is too small to accommodate them.

Mil has this ancient dog that is blind and well, imo, ready to be put down. She wants to bring it with them. It will have to stay with us whilst they are in the hotel.

I don't want the dog here, especially not a disabled one that will probably poo and wee every where. We don't have a garden as it's currently a building site.

If I wanted a dog, I'd get one. I don't so I won't. I've got 3 dcs and that's really enough for me. Plus all the cooking and hospitality for pil this weekend - which of course I don't mind but I think bringing the dog is an imposition.

Aibu?

having now read the thread, i am sorry to hear the dog is so poorly, i may not be a dog fan but its sad if the dog is suffering, hope your mil can have the dog pts and feel some peace with the decison.

re the saving dogs/children without a shadow of a doubt i would ALWAYS save a child first, whether it be my own or some random strangers, infact i would save any person first, because rightly or wrongly i DO hold human life in a higher regard than that of an animal.

i would never mistreat an animal or allow one to suffer etc, but if there is a fire or whatever then i would have to save the person first, if i could i would have a go at saving the animal, but no so as to put MY life in danger i am afraid, if some think that cruel or heartless, then whatever [shrug]

adn there is nothing unreasonable about not wanting ANY animal in your house, its choice, and even if the animal is old or ill then its OWNERS have a responsiblilty to sort out appropriate care for that animal and not to bring it to someones house if they do not want it.

the dog is too old and ill and is to be put down anyway.

but ultimately someone who doesnt want a dog in their home doesnt have to do so!

Malcontentinthemiddle · 18/07/2011 10:48

OP has said space is at a premium - that's why the PIL are staying in a hotel! I doubt she has a spare tiled room which she is ok with everyone staying out of and stinking of dog and probably dog crap!

megapixels · 18/07/2011 10:54

YADNBU. Doesn't matter if it's only a weekend or only a night or whatever, it's their bloody dog! Why should someone who doesn't like dogs have to put up with it, especially an old one that needs extra TLC.

4madboys · 18/07/2011 10:59

well i dont know about you mal, but the only rooms in my house with a wipeable floor are the dining rm and the kitchen, i wouldnt want dog poo and wee all over the floor in an area where i prepare and serve food!

but the point is she doesnt want the dog in HER house, so she doesnt have to have it there! we are argueing a moot point as the dog is to be put down.

but i am amazed at the posters that think its ok to take a dog in a house where its not welcome, thankfully many dog owners have posted and said they woudl NOT do that. a pet owner has to be responsible, that means NOT taking it into a house where its not welcome, for whatever reason.

and i said above and still hold that point that i would ALWAYS save a human life over that of an animal, even a strangers life! if i could also save the animal then i would do but the people come first, if you dont get that then [shrugs]

Malcontentinthemiddle · 18/07/2011 11:03

Agreed re. people first (as have said!). Which is why Oxfam commands a bit more support, quite rightly, than the Cats Protection League.

In my house it would be - living room: carpeted, where we sit in the evening. Dining room - a thoroughfare to kitchen, wooden floor. Kitchen - erm, nope. Funnily enough, I don't think I've ever seen a house with a little tiled room in it that you could store a dog in.

smartyparts · 18/07/2011 11:03

I have a very elderly dog - she has lost fecal continence and is extremely doddery and smelly. Her back legs have just about given up so I have to carry her down onto the lawn to get her to wee.

Looking after her is a labour of love, I don't think I'd expect anyone else to do it, unless they were insistent.

So, I don't think YABU, OP.

4madboys · 18/07/2011 11:15

nor have i mal, my house is the same as yours by the sounds of it.

but hey the op has the builders in, she could get them to build a little room with a tiled floor especially Grin

oh wait she doesnt need to as the dog is sadly having to be put to sleep.

You'd lock an elderly frail dog in a bathroom all night? And what about the people who might need that bathroom?
Don't assume everyone has the same kind of house as you either. In my house, for example, it would be a huge amount of bother to have a dog there. Not that it matters how much bother it is, if someone doesn't want dogs in their house, why the fuck should they have them?

Kladdkaka · 18/07/2011 12:20

My oldest dog gets cold at night so he sleeps under the douvet next to my feet. :o

lesley33 · 18/07/2011 12:24

I looked after a blind nearly deaf, very old dog for a friend. It still has full control of its bladder and bowels, although it needed to be let outside to go to teh toilet a bit more often than a younger dog. So don't assume because it is on its last legs that there are continence problems.

Malcontentinthemiddle · 18/07/2011 12:30

Oh yes, the utility room! Or failing that, your pantry, OP? Or why not the gun room?

Bunbaker · 18/07/2011 12:35

"I really, really don't see how this is a problem or indeed much of an inconvenience."

I do. I think it a massive imposition to ask someone else to look after your sick dog, regardless of whether they actually like dogs or not. I don't understand why you think it is OK.

"but i am amazed at the posters that think its ok to take a dog in a house where its not welcome, thankfully many dog owners have posted and said they woudl NOT do that. a pet owner has to be responsible, that means NOT taking it into a house where its not welcome, for whatever reason."

I totally agree.

Is there an update Winky?

4madboys · 18/07/2011 12:48

thankyou bunbaker :)

and having a dog in a bathroom if its the only one in the house could be a huge inconvenience, i dont want a dog in there when i am going to the loo, taking a shower its bad enough having a baby and or toddler in there! and my bathroom is small.

dont know that many people who have a utility room tbh!

CalamityKate · 18/07/2011 14:23

I love my dogs but humans always come first.

If it came to saving a human life over that of one/both of my dogs, the human would take precidence.

I would also NOT risk making my children motherless in order to save any animal.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 18/07/2011 14:47

Of course, the gun room! Failing that, the boot room?

DrunkenDaisy · 18/07/2011 14:57

I have actually rescued a drowning dog.

I just want everyone on the thread to know that.

DooinMeCleanin · 18/07/2011 15:01

Oooh snap DD. And well done. You and me are a hero Grin

CurrySpice · 18/07/2011 15:05

What'sWrong I think the best place would be with the butler's pantry Wink

DrunkenDaisy · 18/07/2011 15:08

My old cat was so clever that he used to go to the loo actually on the toilet.

Would the non-dog-lovers sooner rescue him than s stupid cat or unskilled dog?

MiraNova · 18/07/2011 15:14

I haven't read the whole thread, but has anyone suggested that you and DH go and stay in the hotel, and let PIL look after dog and DC in your house?

DrunkenDaisy · 18/07/2011 15:15

Someone please answer my cat rescue question.

MsPlaced · 18/07/2011 15:16

I don't think I'd bother me arse rescuing either of them to be honest.
