To have a (genuine) list of things which DD and DS are not allowed to do when they grow up? and if not, what are yours

Let me finish. So when DS was born, DH and I decided that we'd each be allowed one thing which we were permitted to tell our children that they would not be allowed to do when they grow up.
Mine is going into the armed forces. Not because I think it's not an incredibly valuable thing to do and I do have enormous respect for those who do, but because I know myself and I would CONSTANTLY worry.

DH's is that they can never appear on X factor.

Anyway. ILs round this weekend took great exception to this concept, saying that DCs should be allowed to do as they wished etc. Its actually quite lighthearted of course but they could not see this. AIBU?

and if not, make me feel better by telling me what you have banned

in answer to your Q though,.. I've told the ds' they are not allowed to ride a motorbike.

I haven't banned anything, as when they are grown up and living away from home I'll have no control over their decisions anyway, but I would probably disown them if they got a tattoo and DH would probably disown them if they started smoking :)

Although i appreciate that everyone is entitled to make their own choices, personally i would be uspet if my DCs

  1. had a sex change
  2. joined the armed forces (DH has a motorbike so i fear that one is already lost)

Funny isn't it? All manshapes family are bikers, and i'm not bothered in the slightest about them getting on a motorbike, but the very thought of any of them sgning up and risking their lives sickens me.

Much respect to those who do it though, they are indeed brave.

I never wanted my boys to ride motorbikes and 2 of them are old enough now and have actually listened to me. Not sure I would have been able to stop them but we made the effort to live close to town so they would be independent early on and helped with a car when eldest needed it.

Eldest also went into armed forces but didn't sign up thank goodness - My mother was horrified but I promise you - you have to let them live their own lives or they will resent you for ever.

It's incredibly hard but you will still love a child with a tattoo or a smoking habit!

If my DS wants to become a drug dealer in the future then he can (provided he does not hurt anyone else and he buys me a house in Jamaica).

I really do not understand all of these restrictions parents put on children. No sweets, no tv etc I feel sorry for kids of today!

DH and I have quite a comprehensive list:

Marry a clone (bit too SF for me)
go on X Factor (or similar)
wear sportswear when not participating in sport.

That's all.

OP, is it genuine or lighthearted though?! I don't think it can be both!
And, you do realise, if you make it known to them it is forbidden you are going to end up with a DS in the army who auditions on X-Factor - they have been quite a few soldiers on there to my knowledge!
