to think it is just not necessary to have a dining table anymore?

Traditionally it has always been the look of a good home to have a dining table, preferably with its own area/ room in a house for family gatherings.

But, with modern life as it is, I just don't think it is necessary to have one anymore, unless of course you genuinely use it at least once a week. But do most families anymore?

I don't know many families who still go through the process of sitting around the dining table every weekend let alone every day, possibly for the fact that it is a little extra effort people are not as formal about anymore and sitting together doesn't have to be around a table but even just in the living room watching the telly together IYSWIM.

Plus, houses are not always big enough to accomodate a large family sized table and some may just feel it isnt worth the hassle to cram one in.

I also think this about the large cabinets that traditionally housed all a households fine dining wear that would come out on special occasions.

Aren't these bulky pieces of furniture that take up lots of space and are rarely used outdated now except with older people?

My MIL has a six seater table in the living room that could easily fit eight diners but is used properly about once a year. Half the reason for that is that it is too big and has to be crammed against a wall so isnt convenient to sit around daily or even weekly anyway. She also has a very large display cabinet full of her best dining wear wich is only used when special guests such as family travelling from abroad are visiting, which is rarely.

She is about 60 and in her eyes these two items of furniture are essential to beautify a home as well as for practical reasons, which IMO is questionable. My DM and all the older women in my family feel the same way.

But isnt this just all outdated and unecessary faff a house can do without in a time when people are no longer as formal when it comes to situations such as dining?

I use our table everyday!

Quenelle · 07/07/2011 11:57

I don't get why you keep saying eating round a table is 'formal'. It's practical, and not only if you have young children. Tbh, I've been known to drop the odd bit of sauce so I wouldn't trust myself to not mess up the sofa.

Besides, if tables weren't the most comfortable and practical way to eat a meal with others restaurants would be full of sofas wouldn't they?

And I would love a dresser (hint, hint, if anyone wants to get rid of theirs). We don't have enough kitchen cupboards so loads of our tableware is still sitting in packing boxes.

Congrats on your impending LO by the way.

I think it is essential to have a dining table for the family to eat around. We all eat together as a family at the weekend and during the week I eat lunch with the DDs on my days off.

What I don't think is necessary anymore is a separate dining room. Many people now have a dining table in the kitchen and then use the room that would have been a dining room for something else, I certainly am not fussed about having a formal dining room and would much rather have an extra bedroom or a playroom for the DDs. I think when people entertain these days it is now much more informal with people happy to gather in the kitchen.

I agree. I would far sooner have a dining kitchen, but it is too small, so we eat in the dining room, but not formally with cut glass, crystal and three types of cutlery for each of many courses. I find eating at the table the most practical and comfortable way to eat. How on earth do people manage to sit on a settee and eat a roast dinner on their knees comfortably and without slopping gravy on the furniture?

adi1000 · 04/09/2016 08:27

Dining table is required frankly only when guests come. That too,if they are relatives one do not need a dining table. All prefer ACs.Reason is builder flats now a days upto 2BHK are practically not good in space as promised by them. You have to manage your space very wisely.Where you keep a dining table, airconditioner, tv is must and firstly layout must be so that ac will reach on dining chairs and television should be visible. This is complex because seating area is mostly separate from drawing room so ac can do justice at only one place. Now if you hold a good monthly income, only then there's a point putting two ACs.Frankly 2 bhk holders are normally midincome group.Better is to keep a side small table on your bedrooms ,enjoy tv and eat.

We always sit at the table either the small one in the kitchen (generally breakfast) or at the bigger one in the dining end of the lounge, in nice weather we often eat outside.
I don't get how kids would be able to eat off their laps on the sofa- mine would spill
Gravy everywhere!

5 YEARS OLD PEOPLE

How do threads like this even get resurrected??

Gingernaut · 04/09/2016 08:47

Aw come on OP, where do you do your jigsaws?!!

A specific room, just for dining may not be necessary, but a dining table in the kitchen is a necessity.

FeckinCrutches · 04/09/2016 08:48

Ginger op won't answer because the thread is from 2011..

m0therofdragons · 04/09/2016 08:49

It's only when guests come like in laws who stay for a few days that we don't all sit st the table. It sits 6, 8 when extended which we do when dfs come for dinner but generally we don't want to lose the space. We sit as a family for breakfast and dinner at the table. Not really formal as there are 2 5-year-olds and an 8-year-old.

Gingernaut · 04/09/2016 08:49

Ooops. 5 year old thread resurrected by someone who appears to have copied and pasted blurb. Possible spammer.

witsender · 04/09/2016 08:50

What do you do without a table? We have just eaten toast in the living room because one of the kids is making something on the floor, but normally we eat every meal at the table. It is used for crafty things every day, sitting at for home admin etc etc. We would be lost/messier/less organised without it.

Loulou2kent · 04/09/2016 08:52

Love my dining table. It gets used for breakfast, lunch & dinner everyday. If it's sunny we sit outside. Occasionally we might have a takeaway pizza or burger & chips in front of the TV, but personally I hate eating in the front room.

My table also gets used for homework, craft, sewing, when my hairdressers comes & if I'm doing of my paperwork. I couldn't be without it.

FeckinCrutches · 04/09/2016 08:52

Oh my goodness, people really don't RTFT do they??

woodhill · 04/09/2016 08:53

I have a dining table which is used with guests and pulls out seats 8 in dining room, we also have a smaller table in the kitchen/ diner area which we sometimes eat meals at.

Tbh dh and I often eat in the lounge but when all 3 Dcs were at home we ate at the table. It is better for your digestion I think and less messy.

I also have at least 2 dressers of good China and I love setting the table and using cloths etc.

chocoLit · 04/09/2016 08:54

We love ours! Right in middle of home. Family meals. Homework. Parties. Poker nights.

Wouldn't be without it Smile

Our dining room is now a playroom and the dining table is in the kitchen. It gets used everyday. I agree that most people no longer have a room dedicated to dining unless they have plenty of space.
