Health Tourism - woman has 5 babies on the NHS

AIBU to think that this woman is taking the bloody piss?

www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3673011/Nigerian-mum-Bimbo-Ayelabola-flew-into-Britain-and-had-quins-on-the-NHS.html

I very much doubt she will be sent back. Who is paying her legal fees is what I would like to know?

Are we a soft touch or just a lovely compassionate country with enough resources for all?

I like the one at the end Grin
Mum's name is Bimbo, she may want to change that if she want's to stay in the UK.

Firawla · 02/07/2011 23:31

cant blame her though really, i think most people if they were pregnant with 5 babies and not able to get good care for them in their own country would try to do what they can to go somewhere they will have a better chance. it may not be 'fair' but anyone in that position would do it for their kids, so cant really feel outraged about it. of course irresponsible for her being on such a high dosage of the fertility drugs rather than a normal amount but what's done is done. they are very cute, good luck to her

asecretlemonadedrinker · 02/07/2011 23:35

ah, just let her stay. THe poor woman has just had five babies and her husband has buggered off. She is a human being, just as we are. And god knows I'd screw over any country to get the best for my children. Free world and all that.
roffle@thesecondcoming - I like the look of the two book ends - so cute!

BlimmingCheek · 02/07/2011 23:37

Duchesse yawn. I wonder, do you live in Islington per chance?

OP posts:
biological · 02/07/2011 23:38

how sensible of her. i hope she got the care on the nhs that every pregnant woman in the world should get. i can spare the extra penny on my tax bill.

suzikettles · 02/07/2011 23:43

She will be billed for the health costs (although the article says she's unlikely to be able to pay).

It's no different than what would happen if a British person had a baby uninsured while on holiday in the US (although probably cheaper).

They will all probably be deported.

Not sure where the moans and groans about the UK being a soft touch comes from.

What would you have preferred? The hospital to stick her on the next plane out when the pregnancy was discovered and sod her health? For them to have refused to treat her?

The woman is living with her five newborn babies and her sister in a 2 bed flat with no recourse to public funds and an uncertain future. Life. Of. Reilly Hmm

LordOfTheFlies · 02/07/2011 23:51

So if I went off to another country outside of the EC and wanted treatment for whatever kind of medical condition, what kind of answer do you think I'd get?
The NHS is not a bottomless pit. Staff are being laid off for lack of money.
The NHS does charge for visitors but it is very difficult in alot of cases to get the money.
Did you know it costs in excess of £75 per 30 mins for an interpreter. If someone is a different language then a relitive isn't supposed to interpret, you don't know if the information is 100% accurate.

Come to Queens Hospital Romford which is having horrendous problems in their maternity and tell the staff/mums to be whats been said on this thread. I hope you can all run fast and dodge missiles!

LolaRennt · 02/07/2011 23:52

Assuming you're a mother OP, if you lived in a country where 1% of mothers died in child birth... and you were giving birth to 5 children would you stay where you were? Just because you dont want to take the piss out of the NHS. I sure as fuck wouldn't.

Pats OP on the head for being dumb enough to read the sun and take it seriously.

JamieAgain · 02/07/2011 23:59

TSC - they are very very cute. They can stay.

Second- tbh probably quite a good use of resources if it prevents an old person from falling and fracturing a hip. afaik sticks should have a decent rubbery thing on the end- if it's worn, the person could be at quite some risk in wet weather. There may be quite a lot of sense in going to a shopping centre/town centre- it's probably the only way they can "catch" people outside with their walking implement iysqim.

JamieAgain · 03/07/2011 00:05

ferrule - that's the name of the rubbery thing at the bottom of the stick

JamieAgain · 03/07/2011 00:07

A worn or absent ferrule is very dangerous

duchesse · 03/07/2011 00:08

Thanks Jamie. Grin

JamieAgain · 03/07/2011 00:08

You are most welcome

'how sensible of her. i hope she got the care on the nhs that every pregnant woman in the world should get. i can spare the extra penny on my tax bill.'

Beautifully put biological

edam · 03/07/2011 00:36

Thing is, cots in SCBU are rare (and expensive). Someone else's baby may well have been denied a place because the SCBU where her quins were born was full. At the very least, babies will have been transferred to other hospitals, possibly different hospitals from their mothers. Multiple births are so expensive that it actually makes economic sense to provide IVF on the NHS to discourage people from going abroad and having more than one embryo implanted.

I don't blame Bimbo exactly - except for popping the clomid, she showed quite a lot of initiative. But her actions had consequences for other peoples' children.

JessKM · 03/07/2011 00:52

edam, i think I lie with you....while she did the best for her children, and god knows we would all do the same given the chance!!

I was lucky enough to have my children in SCBUs near my home, there was twins there whose mum was 200 miles away recovering from a complicated c-sec,and there was a baby there whose parents could only visit once every few days because they lived so far away and there wasnt a bed in their local SCBU!

An average SCBU/NiCU that iv seen probably has 10-12 specialist beds, which means Bimbo's adorable novelty babies were probably taking up 50% of the specialist resources that probably serve a large UK district and local babies were denied this.

Id hate to come accross as a hater, but if Bimbo had a single baby 5 times, she wouldnt have been flown here and even if there wasnt amazing facilities in NIgeria and PLEASE dont assume its all 'third world', there are countrys very close by which have excellent health care options.

Well done to her, and I wish her well, but I cant help but feel for the 5 displaced families who would have otherwise been cared for in those beds.

JessKM · 03/07/2011 00:56

Also, I doubt they would deport her, Name me an airline tht will let her carry 5 babies!!! Jeebers I had to ask a stranger to pretend to carry my DD on holiday because I can had 3 kids travelling alone! Grin

Empusa · 03/07/2011 00:59

"Makes me boak when idiots bring up stuff that happened 100s of years ago to excuse people taking the piss of this country today."

Don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting a real feeling of deja vu here

FabbyChic · 03/07/2011 01:09

This is why the NHS costs so much, anybody can come into this country and get free health care whilst those that have lived here for years either are refused treatment or die waiting.

A1980 · 03/07/2011 01:11

If I went to any country outside of the EU I would receive no sympathy and be turned away unless I could pay the bills. The British tax payer cannot fund free treatment for the entire world who decideds to come here, therefore I have very little sympathy for this woman.

Because I like to travel and frequently do go outside the EU, I am acutely aware that if anyting happens to me there is no NHS. I always buy insurance with the maximum cover for medical expenses.

People from many countires outside the EU cannot come here without a visa. Therefore buying private health insurance should be made mandatory before a visa is granted and a visa should be denied if they don't buy insurance. If they cannot afford it, how the hell can they afford a plane ticket and to put themselves up in the UK in the first place. They should need to show the insurance docs before being granted a visa.

The words "no recourse to public funds" on the visa means exactly that. You don't pay tax or NI and you are therefore not entitled to take out of the system.

edam · 03/07/2011 01:15

Fabby, no, they can't, in theory at least. The NHS will always offer emergency treatment free but non-EU nationals who don't have a right to remain here don't qualify for free healthcare beyond that. In practice getting them to pay the bills is often quite tricky.
