AIBU to think that this woman is taking the bloody piss?

www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3673011/Nigerian-mum-Bimbo-Ayelabola-flew-into-Britain-and-had-quins-on-the-NHS.html

I very much doubt she will be sent back. Who is paying her legal fees is what I would like to know?

Are we a soft touch or just a lovely compassionate country with enough resources for all?

We need a working population for things to improve and we haven't got that, because of a lack of jobs given to the UK population.

Don't blame the ordnary public for the problems that exsist. Just out of interest what party pledge to spend on public services?

Just to add, i am the daughter of an immigrant, so i won't take my lead from the tabloids (i have never read them).

DamnYouAutocorrect · 04/07/2011 20:28

It's an 'interesting' story in the sense of 'highly unusual and not representative of anything'. Somewhere in Britain today (statistically speaking) someone will have been seriously injured by a donkey. Is that worth a 400-post thread about the nefarious tendencies of donkeys, and lots of outraged posts about how We Must Crack Down on This Sort of Thing?

DamnYouAutocorrect · 04/07/2011 20:29

birdsgottafly - you'll be aware, then, that every single recent study has shown that immigrants make a net contribution to the Treasury?

catgirl1976 · 04/07/2011 20:30

Oh we must crack down on donkeys. I am totally against donkeys - they take the absolute piss they do. My Aunt once met a donkey and it showed no respect whatsoever and bit her arm. They are all like that. Can't trust them. Something needs to be done - totally out of control the donkey situation.....

Bandwithering · 04/07/2011 20:32

No. You're wrong. The NHS is something which affects almost everybody in Britain and the fact that it is so easily abused is relevant and newsworthy.

You can try and make out that everybody who recognises this is a racist!! but actually, I wish the woman herself good luck as I said before she, as an individual is not the issue.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2011 20:32

There is a thread on wether being on a horse is unusual. Cat poo (don't mention dogs on beaches) get lots more posts, so you have got that wrong. Personally I am so pleased that the BLW has died out.

Just don't ask if the woman now needs a fire guard, please.

pigletmania · 04/07/2011 20:36

No I don't feel hate for the woman, we cannot afford to provide the world with free health care, my goodness taxes will have to go through the roof for that to happen. No its not limited to women coming her when their ready to drop but others with other ailments, from Western and Third world countries. Just because I find people coming over to the UK specifically to gain free health care annoying does not mean I am not kind and compassionate that is an insult! And nor do I side with the BNP, well they would tell me and my mum to go back to our own country would they not! So would DH and my very good friends from Armenia and Uganda.

DamnYouAutocorrect · 04/07/2011 20:36

Grin catgirl

birdsgottafly - you've lost me there Grin

bandwithering - I disagree (somewhat predictably). People aren't giving any weight here to how INCREDIBLY UNUSUAL this is, and how it REALLY DOESN'T represent any sort of significant problem. If this was being discussed with full recognition of the complete outlier that it is, it wouldn't bother me.

And with that, I'm off to bathe my kids.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2011 20:37

Yes and those that enter the country and apply to stay do not get benefits, but they are separate issues to cases where there is deception involved.

In my voluntary job i deal with immagrants and the benefit system, all i have met are actively seeking work and looking to build a decent standard of living, but this, is not a racist issue, it is a common sense one. I hate usuing the term comon sense as it rarely is used sensibly btw.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2011 20:39

Damn- the threads on fireguards turn nasty and go on and on.

WiiUnfit · 04/07/2011 20:39

Just to add my own experiences on 'health tourism', while I was in hospital having DS, two women on my ward openly admitted they had travelled to the UK to have their babies on the NHS, one even asked if their DD could have her 8wk immunisations when they visited for a wedding, now I thought that was bloody cheeky! Shock

pigletmania · 04/07/2011 20:40

birdsgottafly my Armenian friend and her dh was one of them, she came to the UK on a lorry with her young son and dh, they were able to stay, and they gained UK Citizenship. The dh works and pays taxes, and they own their own house and do not get benefits. They managed to make a good life for themselves and they said that they would never return to the poverty of Armenia.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2011 20:52

My point is to question why countries in the EU, ( i know this is slightly going off topic) are poverty stricken and we are not fighting for global growth, as i said i am glad for the babies survival, but many babies back in Nigeria will die, this will not be helped by this woman doing what she did and just being allowed to stay. If we really care allowing this to continue isn't the answer.

spudulika · 04/07/2011 20:59

"We need a working population for things to improve and we haven't got that, because of a lack of jobs given to the UK population."

People give jobs to immigrants because they are often smarter, better educated, and harder working than unemployed people in the UK. And despite being all these things, usually prepared to do poorly paid work.

lachesis · 04/07/2011 21:02

'People give jobs to immigrants because they are often smarter, better educated, and harder working than unemployed people in the UK. And despite being all these things, usually prepared to do poorly paid work.'

No, people often give jobs to immigrants because they can take advantage of them and circumvent the law. Such immigrants often come to the UK without a family in tow, and can therefore afford to live in far cheaper, shared rental accommodation.

If accusations of generalisations and bigotry are going to be slung around here, then realise they can work in any direction.

spudulika · 04/07/2011 21:04

Oh, and the biggest problem for the health service in the UK isn't the one in a million mum of quins coming from a non EU country to give birth illegally on the NHs. It's the one in four UK citizens who are overweight, the drinkers, the smokers, and the middle class elderly who WILL go on living to 90 and costing us money, when they could just considerately die at the age of 65 like manual workers. Hmm

pigletmania · 04/07/2011 21:05

I agree with that spudulika totally

People give jobs to immigrants because they are often smarter, better educated, and harder working than unemployed people in the UK. And despite being all these things, usually prepared to do poorly paid work.

They are also willing to work hard and do the jobs that the British born Citizens do not want to do as they see it beneath them.

spudulika · 04/07/2011 21:06

Yes - you are right. They're easy to exploit. But I live in London and it seems the MAJORITY of those working in catering are immigrants. And very good they are too. When was the last time you got served by an English person in Cafe Nero? One who wasn't shit?

pigletmania · 04/07/2011 21:07

My BIL is Albanian and worked in a restaurant with other chefs from Albania, he is an excellent chef

spudulika · 04/07/2011 21:08

How many working class people in this country would have the energy or the enterprise to make a life for themselves in a foreign country? How many ordinary English people could learn enough of a foreign language to get by from day to day, let alone hold down a job?

lachesis · 04/07/2011 21:11

I guess no one just watched Landlords from Hell, where they found hundreds of illegal immigrants from India living in garden sheds.

Yes, they're willing to do jobs for less than minimum wage because they are slaves who have been trafficked in by organised criminal gangs.

That is why you see so many employers willing to employ immigrants.

pigletmania · 04/07/2011 21:11

He came from Albania in his teens and got accommodation and found a job as a souse chef and is doing well. He is now head chef

lachesis · 04/07/2011 21:15

'How many working class people in this country would have the energy or the enterprise to make a life for themselves in a foreign country? How many ordinary English people could learn enough of a foreign language to get by from day to day, let alone hold down a job?'

Well, most leave out of desperation and hunger. You don't tend to see much net emigration from democracies with stable governments and relative wealth.

There are a variety of legal means for a non-EU/EEA national to obtain entry to the UK for purposes of living and working.

This person did not do so. This person abused the visa system. The net effect of visa system abuses is that it then becomes more and more difficult for legitimate applicants from countries were a large number of illegal entrants/absconders to obtain legal clearance.

Birdsgottafly · 04/07/2011 21:21

Spud-many do, but then don't blame the older working class for not learning languages, the education system didn't support it. Why would you think that people working in this country couldn't 'hold down' jobs in other countries. Mind you i have worked with many nurses from all over the world who like the high standards in this country. I also know people who have not stuck to working elsewhere because they will not put lives at risk because of a lack of health and safety.

You have just insulted the majority of the working population here and that comment is racist as you have just put down the Uk population, or is that acceptable racism?

pigletmania · 04/07/2011 21:26

I don't mean to generalise, there are a lot of hard working British people, but there are some who do not have a good work ethic at all. Watch the Fairy Jobmother and it highlights some of them, who get up late, don't give a damn
