Sentences just seem so wrong otherwise.

Olivesandfeta · 01/07/2011 22:09

I dont think commas have a place in todays society in fact lets just get rid of all punctuation and make all sentences run like this in a really really long way because everything has autocorrect now and we dont need to put anything in ourselves because the computer will do it for us and that is all thanks

bigkidsmademe · 01/07/2011 22:10

I always use it. My boss always gets rid of it in my work. It is a constant source of irritation

PaisleyLeaf · 01/07/2011 22:11

So I've just google 'Oxford comma' to see what you're on about and now something makes a bit more sense to me.
I've been getting so cross with the commas before the 'ands' in some of DD's reading books from school (they keep coming up) - I really believed they'd messed up.
Well, now I know.

love that tune cubiks

Zwitterion · 01/07/2011 22:13

I'm not a fan. It's unnecessary and clunky.

MoreBeta · 01/07/2011 22:17

Nope not a fan and in fact I was taught at Primary school it is wrong about 40 years ago so I'm not adopting Americanisms now.

I do however like the semicolon very much as a way of seperating clauses in a bulleted list.

MrMan · 01/07/2011 22:19

Unnecessary you say! OK, consider this non-Oxford example (shameless ripoff of wikipedia):

My favourite things for breakfast are pancakes, sausages and eggs and toast.

Now, am I a fan of sausages and eggs? Or eggs and toast?

Yabu. It's clunky. I am, however, a huge fan of ;

azazello · 01/07/2011 22:34

YANBU. It is an elegant example of punctuation.

WillowFae · 01/07/2011 22:35

YANBU. It makes everything so much clearer!

TheOldestCat · 01/07/2011 22:37

You are definitely not being unreasonable. It aids clarity.

YANBU. I bloody love the Oxford comma. Mind you, I love all commas.

Al0uiseG · 01/07/2011 22:46

I love a nice comma or two. Interestingly (yawn) we interviewed a builder on the strength of his use of a semi colon. As far as I'm concerned they've got the job.

AgentZigzag · 01/07/2011 22:57

PippiLongBottom · 01/07/2011 22:59

Alouise, I would be seriously impressed with a builder that can punctuate. So impressed that I may have to run away with him.
