In the last 5 days I have been spat at, sworn at, screeched at, pushed and had a chair thrown at my head (succesful shot)

That sounds awful. Sad.

Are you a teacher?

DontCallMePeanut · 11/06/2011 09:33

Crikey... What do you do?

breadandhoney · 11/06/2011 09:34

teacher or medical worker?

breadandhoney · 11/06/2011 09:35

sounds dreadful by the way. No one should have to put up with that!

allhailtheaubergine · 11/06/2011 09:35

You are either a teacher, a carer / nurse, or the mother of a 2 yr old.

duchesse · 11/06/2011 09:35

Got to be teacher. Secondary at a guess, although these days you never know.

rainbowinthesky · 11/06/2011 09:36

You must be a secondary teacher.

Goblinchild · 11/06/2011 09:36

Parent, careworker or teacher.

duckdodgers · 11/06/2011 09:37

You sound like a Psychiatric Nurse. That was an average day in the psychiatric acute admission ward for me - fair enough if it was true mental illness that caused people to be disturbed because they cant help it, but a lot of the time in my experience it wasnt.

ScarlettIsWalking · 11/06/2011 09:37

Yes you must be a teacher Sad

Oakmaiden · 11/06/2011 09:37

Teaching Assistant.

tallulahxhunny · 11/06/2011 09:38

working in dss?

Goblinchild · 11/06/2011 09:38

And if it is your job, you need to go back because someone has to do it.
I'd try and create some better strategies or preventions if possible, but sometimes all you can do is duck and count the bruises.

activate · 11/06/2011 09:38

I am not a teacher or support worker but I work in an educational environment with teenagers who have behavioural, social and emotional difficulties - My job title has nothing to do with what I end up doing on a daily, and sometimes nightly, basis

I cannot be too specific due to confidentiality issues of course

but I am running out of steam

bigTillyMint · 11/06/2011 09:38

Goblinchild · 11/06/2011 09:38

why are you making people guess?

I don't understand this thread. Either you want advice if you continue in your line of work, in which case you should state your line of work otherwise the thread is just a guessing game with no actual advice or you just want attention for what has happened to you hence the guessing game.

bigTillyMint · 11/06/2011 09:40

It is very tiring working with SEBD children and I imagine teens are even worse.

Can you start looking for something else?

DontCallMePeanut · 11/06/2011 09:40

For a minute there, I did wonder if you were Jeremy Kyle...

Have a great big Sounds like you need one.

Goblinchild · 11/06/2011 09:41

A good team makes the difference between coping and breaking IMO.
Doesn't tethers work in PRU too? It's one of the toughest jobs going.

Lilyloo · 11/06/2011 09:41

My sympathy , probably not on a great wage either. I did his kind of work with primary age children it is very tough i left after 3 years as had run out of steam. Still bear the physical scars today.

bigTillyMint · 11/06/2011 09:45

Yes, you have to have skin like a rhino (literally) and obviously be part of a fantastic team. But I love my job, admittedly not with teens.

Oakmaiden · 11/06/2011 09:45

I think the questions you really need to ask are: was this what you were expecting when you took the job? Do you enjoy your job? And are you supported by other staff members?

When I worked as a TA with children with BESD I used to be on the receiving end of all of the things you list. Although I did never have a chair hit my head, I have had to duck a fair few, and have been kicked or been hit by smaller things (books/pencils/sticks etc) several times.

And to a great extent I didn't mind - because I didn't take it personally and in general I loved my job. What I DID mind was that my management team made no effort to help deal with the issues (until it was one of them who got kicked - then the child was excluded).

I guess you need to question whether this is the right job for you, and if it is what your team can do to make life less anxious for you.

catinthehat2 · 11/06/2011 09:46

Is it a Drama related job?
Are you a Royal?

Maybe it's both simultaneously?

Do let everybody know when the thread show signs of petering out.
