Quick recap:

The name "Trillian" was taken when I joined, but it had been used on only one thread that was 3 years old.

Obviously if there had been an active Trillian I would not have chosen this name, as I feel that I want to have a distinct identity on here.

The name was then not used for another many months, and often goes for months between posts. The owner of the name Trillian claims to have been around and posting the whole time under other names, and I think it would be less confusing for everyone if she stuck to using one of those names, but she disagrees.

I was unhappy about the other comment deleted not what the op said.

I know SEA - I did say she had it first. She also claims to have plenty of other names to use, and didn't feel the need to use it for 3 1/2 years once. Another gap of 3 1/2 years wouldn't go amiss, IMO.

Namechanging doesn't make anything hard for MNHQ. They know what names are all the same person.

"They" delete for things if people complain. Simple as that. You can say whatever you like if no-one reports the post. It's not automatic.

It's not about the offensiveness or not, really.

It's about how easily confused the two names are.

Same endings are less easily confused than same beginnings, especially if one name is the same as a common contraction of the other.

I woulnd't want to be confused with someone even if they were lovely and sweet to everyone, because it would be confusing if people thought they had had a conversation with me that they had actually had with someone else.

My mum is a bit of a casual racist. Nothing heavy, just the usual Daily Fail shite about dem immigrants nicking all of our jobs and benefits. If I ever felt it necessary to talk about how my mother thinks about certain minorities I would qualify it with "Obviously these are not my views but my mother says xyz..." If I simply came on a thread going "ugh bloody immigrants dirty bastards" I wouldn't expect everyone else to know that they were not MY views.

I think it's a flimsy excuse.
