I only answer my phone if I can see it's one of about three people ringing, so I can't give out about anyone who's just really unsociable, of course.

Alone in the house - if only. I can't remember the last time I was alone in the house. If I was ever lucky enough to find myself alone in the house I doubt I'd answer the door lest someone came and gatecrashed my rare moment of blissful solitude.

Does it matter?
If they don't want to answer their door why should they?

I suffer with crippling anxiety and it just causes me too much stress.

I don't answer the door in the daytime but it's not because I'm alone in the house,it's because I'm fucked off with door to door sales people and Jehovah witnesses.

I don't let people in unless I know them or are expecting them. Not because I am a pathetic, delicate butterfly, but because it's my house fgs.

Sometimes I don't answer. But then sometimes neither of us answers. Tis not because I am frightened because I am simply not interested in seeing anyone or dealing with sales etc. However, if DH 'forbid' me to answer the door I'd probably answer every time...but that's just me.

I don't always answer in the daytime, but I agree with Thingumy. I have left what I am in the middle of and rushed down the stairs so many times only to be greeted by a Jehova's Witness, somebody selling cloths, a charity collector, etc that now I don't always bother.

Of course friends know to shout my name and then yes I will answer the door. And I always answer the door in the evening.

If I am not expecting someone or if it's not postman/delivery I don't open the door. Regardless of if I'm alone or not.

Nothing to with being a woman, I'm just a moody bugger.

I don't answer the door.

Simply because we live too far from friends and relatives so we always know in advance. And besides, my living room looks out onto the car park area too - and visitors always park along our windows (because we're at the end of the car park - far from the entrance gates).

So there's no need for me to open it in 99% of cases.

It's always religious botherers (unwelcome), sales people (unwelcome) etc.

In the whole time I've lived here (4.5yrs) I've rarely opened the door, and the times I have, it's been a waste of my time.

So why would I get up off the sofa, stop cooking dinner, make someone I'm on the phone to be on hold, put down my book, get out of th bath for... or whatever?

No incentive here.

However, DH doesn't open the door either. So there we are!

I tend to have a good look, and if they are wearing suits (sales) or sandles (JWs), or are my irritating neighbour, I don't answer. I usually do though.

However, some people like Madame really suffer from anxiety, and I'm not sure it's your place to criticise their coping strategies.

Oh yes, and DH gets parcels for me and him delivered to his workplace anyway, so the post is dealt with.

I answer it but if I can't be arsed to chat I tend to look through the spyhole first and see who it is in case I get collared by my neighbour, a Jehovahs Witness or similar

I never answer the door in the evening unless its someone Im waiting for etc etc. My house is very near a main road and you do get a lot of people strolling past as well. Plus Im a miserable bitch anyway! ha ha . I only answer the phone if the number is displayed

or a delivery guy saying " can you take this for your neighbour"
or... someone saying "I found your kids school bag"

I'm far too nosey not to open the door

before I had kids it would never have occurred to me not to answer the door regardless of whether DH is in or not. Now if I'm on my own, the same applies, but if the kids are here and DH isnt, I wouldnt answer the door after dark as we dont have a porch light so I cant see who is there.

I can see why people who have anxiety issues with it, and if they dont feel comfortable answering the door, thats up to them, nothing to do with anyone else, on mumsnet or otherwise.
