Two words: DOGS MESS!!

OP posts:
mrsdonkeybucket · 03/06/2011 23:20

We did (very foolishly) try to train our girl to run off-lead when she was a pup. Learnt the hard way. It just cannot be done. Usually people who tell you they can have a cross-husky and weren't aware.

It's something to do with the 'wolf' instinct. And hunting. And the fact that they just love to run.

I adore my 2 sibes, they are 12 and 9 now, but am never having another one. It makes me so sad that they cannot run off-lead, and it must be a killer for them to see all the other dogs having a good run about and they can't ! It's also quite restrictive as an owner. But, we have good flexi leads so they can have a good stretch and feel as though they are running free ! Makes me feel better as a responsible owner too that I can 'reign them in' if the need arises....not running up to people etc. When we are in town we use a small lead, so they walk right next to us.

I just wish people would extend the courtesy. Just because they once saw them in "Snow Dogs" it doesn't mean you are all welcome to come and kiss/hug my dogs !

orienteerer · 03/06/2011 23:20

Long live Northumbria (& its' beaches)Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 03/06/2011 23:21

It's kids that ought to be banned from beaches then not dogs. Most dog owners pick the poo up but over the years I have seen numerous toddlers shit on the beach and it gets left.

fifi25 · 03/06/2011 23:21

My mam had a huskie and the 1st thing the breeder said was are you aware you can never let them off the lead. Their son let their price huskie out by accident and they chased it in the car. It was never to be seen again. A girl on my estate had one for 3 years and used to let hers off the lead and it always came back. One day it didnt, Luckily she got it back.

mrsdonkeybucket · 03/06/2011 23:22

Paddington

No. Not obedient huskies. Very lucky owners. Smile

Heph

That's the only trouble with the flexi's ! Grin

MillyR · 03/06/2011 23:22

I too love Northumberland.

mrsdonkeybucket · 03/06/2011 23:25

For anyone who is interested in Sibes, head over to the Siberian Husky Club Of Great Britain. (sorry don't know how to do links).

fifi All responsible breeders will tell you that. I know too many people who thought they were the exception to the rule, until the dog went and didn't come back/got run over, etc.

hephaestus · 03/06/2011 23:30

SHCGB :)

For what it's worth both SHCGB Welfare and the Siberian Husky Welfare Association include a clause in the adoption paperwork that you must agree to never, ever let the adopted dog off the lead unless in a completely enclosed area. I think the official breed club know what they're talking about.

Meeting our second rescue husky (from SHWA) in a couple of weeks, I've just ordered a new collar and lead in my excitement. Grin

mrsdonkeybucket · 03/06/2011 23:33

Thank you, Heph. Smile

Wow ! Girl/boy ? Name ?!

WorzselMummage · 03/06/2011 23:36

It must be absolutly miserable for a dog to never be let of the lead Shock

hephaestus, far be it for me to argue with the experts. I bow down to their superior knowledge. :)

I'm lucky that my own dogs don't share that trait and can be allowed off lead - in one dog's case I can boast that he has absolutely, turn on a sixpence, fantastic recall (but I don't take it for granted and am never blase about it). They're big dogs though and can be scary to those who aren't dog savvy which is why I will always recall and lead up or sit and stay command to one side when I see people coming, out of courtesy. Though that said I used to get a bit humpity when walking dogs and DC when my DC were small and people approaching would still be abusive or clutch their own children to their breasts as if my dogs were child-eaters and that I'd have them in the home with my own children if that were the case. Hmm I always wanted to point out, "Helloooo... look! I have children of my own, why on earth do you think my dogs are going to hurt your children, you silly fool!".

hephaestus · 03/06/2011 23:41

A boy, a little under two years old and no name as yet, his current name is a bit rubbish and his fosterer reckons he doesn't answer to it anyway so we'll come up with something when he comes home. :)

Well, fingers crossed anyway, it depends if the ASBO bitch likes him or not! Grin On paper he sounds perfect so I'm really optimistic, aforementioned bitch really put us through the mill with separation anxiety and complete lack of socialisation so I'm looking forward to an 'easy' dog now she's sorted.

mrsdonkeybucket · 03/06/2011 23:41

Well, the flexi leads go a looooong way, I just have to be careful not to cut people in half who get in the way are around. Smile

We regularly hire out tennis courts so that ours can have a "lead free" run about, and we have a big(ish) garden for them to run around in.

mrsdonkeybucket · 03/06/2011 23:44

Heph Ahhhh. Don't make me consider another one, I wont, I wont !

If your bitch is anything like mine, she will baby him like crazy ! Smile

hephaestus · 03/06/2011 23:45

Worzsel, they are (or at least ought to be) working dogs that are running in harness daily in the season for many miles at a time.

I'm very lucky to have permissive access to a number of secure fields to let mine have a blast off the lead daily but, with a bit of care (and a Flexi Giant or a 50ft line) and bearing in mind that most sibe owners are doing 2-3 hours a day of walking in addition to their training, they are certainly having their needs met. :)

mrsdonkeybucket · 03/06/2011 23:48

Sibes are not for lazy people ! Wink

ILoveYouToo · 03/06/2011 23:52

I didn't get to the end of this thread before my eyes refused to focus any more, and I thought I'd return fresh in the morning....Smile

But thank you, you wonderful dog-loving women, for making me laugh out loud (you really did; not just some random lol) Grin at this thread.

I shall sleep now ....

GetOrf · 04/06/2011 00:09

YABU

What a crock of shit.

WHY should dog owners who want to walk their dogs on the beach all year round have to restrict their activities in the summer months because of the tourists? Madness.

Yes you have wanker dog owners who don't pick up the dog mess but you get them everywhere.

I don't own a dog but I can imagine that dogs (esp. water ones) love dashing about on a beach.

I grew up near Woolacombe beach (3 mile long beach) which had a very sensible policy - the beach near the village which gets very populated has a dog ban, the middle portion of the beach you can have dogs on a lead, the rest of the beach the dogs can run free.

I actually think that they should ban TOURISTS from the beach, they get in the fucking way of the locals and nick all the best spots Grin

GetOrf · 04/06/2011 00:10

For tourists read GROCKLES

GetOrf · 04/06/2011 00:12

viva have you really seen a toddler shit on a beach? Christ!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 04/06/2011 00:12

Yabu

VivaLeBeaver · 04/06/2011 00:18

I've seen numerous toddlers shit on the beach. In the depths of rural eastern England there aren't toilets at the beach. Infect I've seen older kids be caught out as well. Parents don't even have the sense to use a carrier bag to pick it up in.

cymruoddicatref · 04/06/2011 00:27

Wow. We wouldn't even dream of going to a beach without our gorgeous cocker spaniel. Duh... It would be too dull for words.

madhattershouse · 04/06/2011 00:32

YABU I would always pick up any mess left by my dog..shame the idiots who leave broken glass in the sand aren't as thoughful!!
