at the shark-chasing. You need a dog with you there. I'm sure my terrier would be a match for a great white shark in his imagination

Glad so many are happy with children digging sand castles in sandy poo and panicing on a field of lovely grass with a lovely trail of doggy doo.

you are being unreasonable.

I didn't know beaches banned dogs, I think that's awful.

MmeBlueberry · 03/06/2011 22:30

I let my dog off the lead but I can assure you she is not interested in you or your children. She is really only interested in other dogs, and anything that is hiding in bushes.

Stop being so egocentric :)

MmeBlueberry · 03/06/2011 22:31

Indeed, btp.

lisad123 · 03/06/2011 22:32

We had to drive miles to find a dog friendly beach last summer in bournemouth.
Think I would rather a dog than a group of loud drunk adults anyway [grin

Threadworm8 · 03/06/2011 22:32

It seems fair enough to ban dogs from lots of the most popular beaches, given that some owners don't clean up behind their dogs. But it is a real nuisance if you are on holiday with a dog. Can't leave them at a campsite; can't leave them unattended in lots of holiday rentals; obviously can't leave them in the car. And can't take them on the beach.

WineComesInAtTheMouth · 03/06/2011 22:32

Only if they also ban the feckwits who leave litter, broken bottles and piles of vomit.

My dogs leave no shite litter behind, I pick it all up. On my beach walk tonight there were more discarded disposable BBQs than dog mess. And beer cans, carrier bags and fag ends. I agree that some dog owners are lazy but please don't think we are all irresponsible. Our beach has a section especially for dogs but that does not stop non dog owners using it and leaving their mess behind.

I agree standing in dog mess is disgusting, but a few covert wardens handing out on the spot fines would get the message across better than an outright ban.

EggyAllenPoe · 03/06/2011 22:33

do you think...if that's what was there.. you might stop them? and move them to some non-pooey sand?

i mean with regular tides you only get 12 hours maximum for the beach to acquire dirt in.....it never gets that bad.

There are loads of beautiful beaches by me and many ae no dogs allowed for the summer months and quite a few are dog friendly all the year round. My favourite is the beach which has a cafe that has an annual celebration of the day which marks dogs being allowed back on the beach with dog treats and free pet pampering sessions.

I feel my dog is part of my family and as such I try to include her whenever possible in our outings, which include the beach if we so choose. Maybe it's some humans that need to be banned from the beaches, particularly the fat ones in speedos and the terminally miserable

Bollocks, stupid pc posted twice

PaddingtonStare · 03/06/2011 22:36

On the subject of seals, please keep your dogs away from them. For the past few years at some beaches they've been found to be carrying the Parvo virus. As you doubtless know, Parvo is very contagious and the virus can last a long, long time. Your dog may be immune but those he or she comes into contact with may not be.

Ban bloody jet-skis. And those little jellyfish that sting.

Mmeblueberry When DS was 13 months old he was attacked by a dog. On a no dogs beach. He had to have stitches on both legs. He was only toddling along minding his own business. This morning, on my run, on the path which has big 'No Dog' signs, a large dog ran up to me, jumped up at me and bowled me over, luckily his owner stopped her texting and ran over to get him back on the lead. 'He was only being friendly'. Yeah right.

But your reaction is typical of arrogant dog owners.

MillyR · 03/06/2011 22:36

I think there is a good balance of dog beaches and non-dog beaches. Some areas that don't get a lot of tourism rely on the fact that many people will go there because they have some beaches that allow dogs.

Threadworm, my dogs rolled next to a dead seal on one of the Farne Islands and stank, and then we had to take them back to the mainland on a little boat full of tourists.

tryingtobemarypoppins2 · 03/06/2011 22:37

It is a real issue here though. Every grassy area is covered. TBH I never see many of those bins or dog poo area things but still allowing a dog to poo where you know children are playing is mad.

Out of interest, those with dogs, do you let them poo in your garden if you have a crawling baby??

Thetasigmaman,

Remind me where I advocated using a no beach?

Threadworm8 · 03/06/2011 22:38

Oh, thanks Paddington. I didn't know that. I'll keep the dog further away if we see another.

I think there had been a big storm. There were dead starfish too, and loads of stones had just vanished from the beach. (And it was the weekend of The Rapture, so think on.)

ILoveYouToo · 03/06/2011 22:39

thetasigmamum I apologise for my foul and confrontational language.
I have noticed that my posts this evening are a bit free with the fucks, so to speak.

You are partially right; it is the irresponsible dog owners that piss me off the most, because they ruin it for all the responsible dog owners. I wouldn't dream of leaving dog shit on a beach, and I find it disgusting when I see dog shit lying around or (worse) bagged and hung on things. ??? Confused Hmm

But the indiscriminate dog haters rile me too. Why should I not be able, as a responsible dog owner, to go on any beach at all during the summer, due to others' irresponsibility?
