happy4eva · 06/06/2011 21:34

And as for picking up after them do you pick up their piss as well? thought not

WHAT!! Really how is anyone able to do that?
Little children have spills in the water too so maybe we should ban children from the beach and o yeah the swimming pools.
Don't be daft.

happy4eva · 06/06/2011 21:35

:)

pooka · 06/06/2011 21:36

I bet a greyhound would have a fantastic time on the beach - all that space and sand for running on. :)

bigbuttons · 06/06/2011 21:37

boobys bay sounds wonderful, I'll be putting that on my places to visit list, I love daft place names. The dc's have a book on stupid place names round the world. I nearly wet myself reading them out (puerile emoticon).

happy4eva · 06/06/2011 21:37

She adores it. :)
And i adore taking her.

pooka · 06/06/2011 21:38

Yes dog shit is grim. BUt it can be picked up, and most people do. I'm not keen on dogs, but it's not their fault that a small minority of inconsiderate dickheads don't clear up after them.

Dog pee - meh. Doesn't bother me like crap. Just as I've been less 'ewww' when one of the dcs has peed on me than if it were poo.

posterofagirl · 06/06/2011 21:41

Bear anyone?

pooka · 06/06/2011 21:46

And while I'm not that keen on dogs usually, I've already said that I do love to see a dog larking about on the beach. It's the only time I ever think I'd like a dog - they just seem to have so much fun. :)

I love a rude place name. Live near Pratts Bottom.

babybythesea · 06/06/2011 22:07

magazinefiend: I reckon people are too keen to count dogs as family members. they are not family members they are animals

I think we'll have to beg to differ there. I know she's an animal, but my dog is a hugely important part of my life, one I get a huge amount of pleasure from, and from whom I receive a huge amount of affection (adoration). It is returned in spades. Please don't presume you can tell me who, or what, I may lavish affection on. I won't presume to tell you who you should love either. I don't let her interfere with others, she is trained, and I pick up after her. So she doesn't impact on you. Let me live my life as I wish and I will do the same by you. If you don't get it, that's fine (there's probably a lot of stuff you do that I don't understand). She is part of my family. Full stop.

Believe it or not i like dogs (just not their shit). And i do not intend to belittle peoples love for their pets. however as long as there is one dog owner who leaves the poo then yes they should be all kept away from areas where children should have the right to play without worry about disease etc. (thats why I made the point about their piss as well, obviously you can't collect it!! so that means its there where my children play). Unfair to responsible dog owners who pick up? yes it is. sorry.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 06/06/2011 22:42

Ive been out with 2 dogs 3 times today and only once did one shit. I picked it up in my asda nappy sac. If there is shit all over outside someone needs to ring the dog warden. There is probably a few dogs doing it. Explain to the warden or e mail them a photo. They will actually lurk about if you ring them. Ive seen loads of people caught. I would also complain to the school/council.

herladyship · 06/06/2011 22:50

Yanbu, not at all... The world is all about you, it revolves around you, your needs and your views about what is 'right'. any other creature that spoils the enjoyment of your god given rights should be shot!

BonzoDooDah · 06/06/2011 23:40

Dooinmecleanin you made me laugh til I coughed!

floweryblue · 07/06/2011 00:56

I used to be terrified of dogs until we got one, wow what a difference a year makes. Not only am I happy for my dog to slobber all over me, I also don't mind other people's dogs as much.

I agree with the view that there should be dog friendly areas and non-dog areas, just pisses me off a bit that all the dog-friendly beaches here seem to be not my faves and hard to get to.

If we use St Ives as an example, why can't one of the two huge beaches be completely dog free (Porthminster, family beach with less rough water) and allow the other large beach, Porthmeor, to allow dogs within restricted areas and timescales (not sure what the restrictions are, but can completely see that dogs on that beach in the daytime in the season, would be wrong).

There are very limited beaches in St Ives which allow any dog activity at all, but there are a lot of people who bring their dogs to Cornwall, and some of our dogs live here.

pooka · 07/06/2011 06:59

That's weird flowery blue - must just be a borough/council difference. I'd say at least 80 percent of the beaches near padstow are keen on dogs.

Those that aren't do have total may-sept ban I think (though I don't have a dog so I'm not certain).

Samantha0104 · 07/06/2011 07:02

I think during peak times i.e April - September then yes, the beach is to busy (during the day) to alow dogs to be running around, however its down to the owner to be sensible and know how their dog will respond to a busy environment and most of all pick up what they leave behind! I have two dogs & as they are very young I avoid places like the beach because I know its too much excitement for them, I wouldn't leave their mess behind either its just rude!

babybythesea · 07/06/2011 07:41

they should be all kept away from areas where children should have the right to play without worry about disease etc

Ahh, but that isn't what you said. You started to discuss how people should feel about their animals. If you look back over this thread, you will see that I, as a responsible dog owner, happily keep away from beaches and other areas, that are non-dog friendly. And I accept that some people don't. I also think that reacting by banning me from those areas which allow me in isn't going to solve the problem caused by those who are already ignoring restrictions and that what we need is a way of better enforcing these. That way, there would be areas where children can play without worry. Although my child is unlikely to be there - she'll be playing on the dog friendly beach with her dog and having a great time! All a lot of us who have dogs are saying is that while we respect the rights of people to be able to visit dog free areas, we also have some rights and don't wish to be banned from every single beach, or every scrap of countryside, on the offchance that someone who objects to the dog may walk there.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/06/2011 08:58

Haven't read whole thread but everywhere I've been has a mix of dogless/ dog-rich beaches in season; on the latter clearly any mess should be picked up - as everywhere else. I grew up by the seaside, the onlytime I saw a kid with shit on his bare foot it was up on the prom not the beach.

As for health issues on beaches... dogs are a very minor issue, just more obvious because they run around and bark. Looking back on 50 years of beach-going, I honestly can't remember ever seeing a dogshit on a beach (on the prom, yes, lots - yuck) . I picked up a dead rat as a toddler; its not uncommon to find condoms/needles among the flotsam. And you're much more likely to be made ill by human waste or farm runoff from poor sewage/drainage control than from a few dogs.

misssugar · 07/06/2011 18:25

Not sure if anyone has made this point but I am a dog owner and I am delighted that we have a dog free beach in the summer and a dog friendly beach just so I can tell the miserable people who seem to feel entitled to have a go at me just for having a dog - despite him being well behaved and me always picking up after him - that if they don't like it they can go to the dog free beach and stop hassling me!

I had no idea such self righteous people existed before having a dog - i have lost count of the people who feel that they have the right to be rude to me because I have a dog - for example - I was told off for having a wet dog on the beach! (My dog dared to have a dip in the sea on the dog friendly beach) I mean ffs!

DooinMeCleanin · 07/06/2011 18:45

A dog sniffed you insertclevername Shock!!!!?

Dear god! Are you okay? Do you think you will survive? I'll contact the local decontamination unit for you if you need me to?

A dog sniffing! Oh the horror.

pingu2209 · 07/06/2011 19:21

I went to St Ives in Cornwall and the harbour beach is full of children and families. No dogs are allowed on the beach from April to October (including both these months).

However, a family still took their Staffordshire Terrier onto the beach. It wasn't muzzled and its lead was loosely hooked onto their pushchair. The family were not watching it and pretty much totally ignored it. If the dog suddenly decided to make a run for it, it would not have been stopped in time.

However, that breed of dog has a bad reputation and I was very concerned that whilst it may be fine around their family, would it be around my 2 boys and little girl.

I was furious that they felt that the rules didn't apply to their dog somehow. I was going to say something but a guy who sells boat trips/hire got in there before me.

ddubsgirl · 07/06/2011 19:35

park where i am it isnt the dog mess u need to worry about its the little fuckers that burn out stolen mopeds, cars etc, broken glass(ds3 had massive shard stuck in his foot).
the school has had work done and no have no grass to play on so they have had an area fenced off on the playing field over the road and what makes me mad it dog owner using it to let the dog run around in and letting it shit, but school cannot padlock it as the locks just get broken off :(

DooinMeCleanin · 07/06/2011 19:48
