Disclaimer - I am not a poncetastic twat. Get that in before you lot accuse me. Grin

At MILs last night, couple of SILs there. My MIL loves champagne, it was a distinct luxury when she was younger and I don't think she bought a bottle until she was in her 40s. Now she is making up for lost time and I always buy her a decent bottle for her birthdays, mothers day etc.

We were talking about different brands, and she was remembering the different ones she has tried, I said that a cheapish one which I had bought from Sainsbos (Charles something) was rated in the Sunday Times as being better than the more recognised brands such as Moet etc.

At which point my SIL laughed scoffingly and said 'I would have thought you would have known that the French don't5 pronounce the t on the end of the word, it is pronounce Mow-AY' (said in full on condescending terms).

I said fuck off dicksplash 'no it is pronounced Mo-ETT, theword is Dutch anyway'

She carried on 'no it's not, champagne is French not dutch, next you will be saying Edam comes from Wales' Hmm

She really got on my tits.

Waiting staff saying tortilla instead of torteya makes me want to give them basic Spanish pronunciation lessons!

kat2504 · 03/06/2011 12:08

no you are not wrong it is noo-gar!

said · 03/06/2011 12:14

I thought theatre people just called it Les Mizz as a sort of in-joke, aren't we ironic thing?

I say Nikey - am I wrong?

nickelbabe · 03/06/2011 12:18

Moss-co in British English,
Moss-cow in US English.

HeadfirstForHalos · 03/06/2011 12:19

Thanks kat2504 :)

I pronounce Nike to rhyme with bike, but I don't have a clue if that's correct!

GiveMeStrength2day · 03/06/2011 12:23

aquavit Grin Grin Grin

nickelbabe · 03/06/2011 12:23

it is ch'batta because the c and i together make ch.

nougat is actually one of those words that you can get away with pronoucing how you like! Grin

(except to my ears, noo-garrr sounds so fucking poncy)

nugg-et
or nugge' (like the t is a clottal stop, like we pronounce things in Common english)

AbsDuCroissant · 03/06/2011 12:25

Thanks nickelbabe.

ShirleyKnot · 03/06/2011 12:26

GiveMeStrength - yes a filthy sarf lahdan one.

Noo-Gar. not bloody NUG-It.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/06/2011 12:32

Ooh gosh I learn a lot on here.

For everyone pronouncing it wrongly (including me) - I blame

quiddity · 03/06/2011 12:35

Moët isn't pronounced mo-ett because of the diaeresis/trema?that only affects the pronunciation of the vowels, not the consonant at the end.
The diaeresis indiicates a diphthong, ie the vowels are pronounced separately (eg the New Yorker, ridiculously, uses one in words like "coöperate").

trixymalixy · 03/06/2011 12:38

My Mum asked for a croissant somewhere in the US, pronouncing it correctly the French way. The waiter said, " actually ma'm I think you'll find it's pronounced crossantt"

Cue us ROFL and probably getting our food spat on, was one of those moments you couldn't help but laugh though.

If you're going to correct someone on pronounciation, you should make damn sure you are right. Hence why I never do Grin.

Cosmosis · 03/06/2011 12:39

I think it should be moett because of the ?et? after. You do pronounce the t in words followed by a vowel because ?mo-ay ay chandon? doesn?t flow.

Not read the thread so someone?s probably already said that.

Hullygully · 03/06/2011 12:44

well i never did and no mistake

kallima · 03/06/2011 12:47

shinyshoes · 03/06/2011 13:11

How about VASE. My friend laughs because I say it so it ryhmes with FACE

She says VARZ

ShirleyKnot · 03/06/2011 13:12

You never did what Hully?

VARZ not VACE you maniac!

nickelbabe · 03/06/2011 13:13

it's varz in British English,

and in US English, it apparently varies from region-to-region.
I think the most popluar (on the East Coast, so New york etc) is vace (like yours shinyshoes)

TheFlyingOnion · 03/06/2011 13:20

not sure if anyone has mentioned this but:

can i add that bruschetta is pronounced broo-skett-a ?

ithankyou Smile

oh and I once heard a lady in my local deli ask for a slice of quicky (quiche)

Punkatheart · 03/06/2011 13:21

Sometimes I ask for a quicky.

I don't mean quiche.

montmartre · 03/06/2011 13:21

Ha! I knew this because Freddy Mercury gets it wrong in Killer Queen.

How do you say Taittinger? (tay-tan-djay?)
is it Bow-lan-djay for Bollinger?

bringmesunshine2009 · 03/06/2011 13:26

AlpinePony "poo" my brain has just hemoraged. The first time I heard that I was 19 and my then BF (aged 35 hmm pervy) brought round champagne and strawberries, which was lovely, until he dunked a strawberry in the champagne (mwett now I come to think of it haha) and said "nothing better than strawbs dipped in poo" eerrgh mental visions still with me.

ZXEightyMum · 03/06/2011 13:28

My Mum said it was, "Crozzont" when I was little. And Tag-lee-a-tell.

Best pronunciation of Les Mis was from my ex, deliberately, when he kept talking about having booked tickets for us to see, "Lez Mizz-ra-balls" aka the Miserable Buggers.

I was once "corrected" three times wrt Bruschetta and stupidly tried to engage the waitress for a second by saying that the "ch" is a hard sound as in, "Chianti".

But she didn't know what Chianti was, despite it being available.

I resigned myself to having a meal full of phlegm and said it didn't matter, was only making conversation etc and was told that it was fine, she was used to people like me assuming she was ignorant and that she was actually studying MFL at Uni Grin
