Disclaimer - I am not a poncetastic twat. Get that in before you lot accuse me. Grin

At MILs last night, couple of SILs there. My MIL loves champagne, it was a distinct luxury when she was younger and I don't think she bought a bottle until she was in her 40s. Now she is making up for lost time and I always buy her a decent bottle for her birthdays, mothers day etc.

We were talking about different brands, and she was remembering the different ones she has tried, I said that a cheapish one which I had bought from Sainsbos (Charles something) was rated in the Sunday Times as being better than the more recognised brands such as Moet etc.

At which point my SIL laughed scoffingly and said 'I would have thought you would have known that the French don't5 pronounce the t on the end of the word, it is pronounce Mow-AY' (said in full on condescending terms).

I said fuck off dicksplash 'no it is pronounced Mo-ETT, theword is Dutch anyway'

She carried on 'no it's not, champagne is French not dutch, next you will be saying Edam comes from Wales' Hmm

She really got on my tits.

Dont hit her with a champagne bottle
You might spill some

nickelbabe · 03/06/2011 09:58

it is Mo-ett.

I watched a programme a while ago about champagne, and there was a representative from Moet Chandon on the programme and he said "it's pronounced Mo-ett"

LittleOneMum · 03/06/2011 09:58

While we're on this, can you settle an argument between me and DH?

Porsche. The car. he says it is Porsh-ah. I say it is Porsh. ??

I never knew that! I feel all enlightened. Now when my sister asks what new fact I have learned on MN lately I can enlighten her.

I do feel for your MIL a bit, GetOrf. 5 SILs under one roof does sound rather fraught!

Yes. You are not only justified in clouting her but you are also justified in pointing out that she is Wrong. And then drinking more :)

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/06/2011 09:58

If I recall my French correctly from school, if you have a letter "t" before a word that starts with a vowel, then you pronounce the t as a proper t.

So...... if the & becomes the french word for "and" i.e. "et", which starts with a vowel, then you should pronounce the "t" at the end of Moet loud and clear.

i.e. Mow-ett Ay Shondon kind of thing.

Feck knows what you're supposed to do if you're not prouncing the whole thing and only want to say just the Moet bit on its own!

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 03/06/2011 09:59

Ahem, I have been to the Moet et Chandon building in Epernay.

It is definitely Moet - he was Dutch.

And the waiter may think you were a fool if he was an uncultured knob. Grin

If your MiL likes champagne it is really worth taking her for a weekend to Epernay. It's a beautiful place and there are loads of places that you can visit for tastings.

iwasyoungonce · 03/06/2011 09:59

I went to a Champagne tasting event once (with work) and the man hosting it was an absolute expert, and Champagne fanatic. he told us it was pronounced Mo-ett. And that "Moet" as a Dutch man, and this is why.

So YANBU.

I'm almost embarrassed to pronouce it "Mo-ett" though, because everyone always thinks you're saying it wrong.

The fools! Grin

ratspeaker · 03/06/2011 09:59

GetOrf that's wicked
true though
Hugs hun

GetOrf · 03/06/2011 10:00

Porsh-A.

I feel very self conscious in saying it though, but have to as DP is a german speaker and he gets very annoyed if people say it wrong Hmm

Oooh we sound like a fun family don't we Grin

DeepPurple · 03/06/2011 10:01

Car dealers call the ka k a. I think it's so you don't get confused between car and ka!

nickelbabe · 03/06/2011 10:01

oops, missed the "et" out of the compant name.... Blush

JamieAgain · 03/06/2011 10:02

I'm orf to an hotel now. Laters

nickelbabe · 03/06/2011 10:02

Porsche is porsh-eh because it is German.
but only knobs pronounce it that way when they're speaking English
if you're having a conversation in the German language, it's fine.

LoveInAColdClimate · 03/06/2011 10:03

YANBU. The correct pronunciation is Mow-et. You are right.

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 03/06/2011 10:03

It's a bit like valet - do you pronounce it val ay or valet?

I know that the french pronounce it the former, but Bertie Wooster would have used the latter. But if I use the latter it sounds like I don't know that it is french...

arghh.
