Disclaimer - I am not a poncetastic twat. Get that in before you lot accuse me. Grin

At MILs last night, couple of SILs there. My MIL loves champagne, it was a distinct luxury when she was younger and I don't think she bought a bottle until she was in her 40s. Now she is making up for lost time and I always buy her a decent bottle for her birthdays, mothers day etc.

We were talking about different brands, and she was remembering the different ones she has tried, I said that a cheapish one which I had bought from Sainsbos (Charles something) was rated in the Sunday Times as being better than the more recognised brands such as Moet etc.

At which point my SIL laughed scoffingly and said 'I would have thought you would have known that the French don't5 pronounce the t on the end of the word, it is pronounce Mow-AY' (said in full on condescending terms).

I said fuck off dicksplash 'no it is pronounced Mo-ETT, theword is Dutch anyway'

She carried on 'no it's not, champagne is French not dutch, next you will be saying Edam comes from Wales' Hmm

She really got on my tits.

LRDFeminist - collective noun for MNers is a squabble....

ScatterChasse · 04/06/2011 19:39

Oh I know nickel, it's just writing the bit about hyphens made me wonder if there was any way to differentiate, if it's a verb used for two purposes, other than context.

sausagerollmodel · 04/06/2011 20:09

Anyone know how to pronounce Rombouts (coffee)?

AlpinePony · 04/06/2011 20:27

I say lambrini as in lambreenee not lamBRYnee, you dig? Grin

SnuffleTurtle153 · 04/06/2011 21:41

When I worked in a bakers we had little shiny labels on all the food saying what it was, including 'N. Dairy Dougnut' where the 'N' stood for non dairy. I was once asked for 'A piece of that qwuitch (quiche) and an enderry dog-nut' which sounded like the most unappatising lunch ever! Grin

Mag-ners.
Grin

I drink Pol Roger and raise a glass to Mr Churchill who had a special relationship with Mme Pol Roger. Allegedly.

emmanana · 04/06/2011 22:38

As trendy as Magners is in the UK, a friend from Ireland swears it has a real pikey image in Ireland (Bit like White Lightening here)
Is she pulling my leg?
I prefer Bulmers for the record. Not that I expect any one to give a shite Grin

I said 'Panino' yesterday and got a look as if to say 'shut up you snob' Grin.

My MIL is adament it's a 'panini ' and ironically goes into a posh italian deli for said 'panini' I told her to ask her italian friend in there.

I'm still waiting for the phone call to say I was right Wink

MardyBra · 06/06/2011 15:54

"I said 'Panino' yesterday and got a look as if to say 'shut up you snob' "

I rest my case.

Was thinking about this thread and remembering that preDC when I still had a life we lived v.near a street in west London called Beauchamp street.

Apparently it ought to be Beecham. When I tried to say Beecham to people they corrected me "no no, it's Beau-champ. It's french dontyaknow."

Pennybubbly · 07/06/2011 02:39

Oooh, I'm getting all itchy reading this.

The Lauren in Ralph Lauren is pronounced like the girl's name.
IKEA is pronounced Ih-Kay-A (my colleague is Swedish).

But PLEASE don't get me started on incorrect pronunciations of Italian foodstuff. I start to wriggle uncomfortably.

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 07/06/2011 03:52

Ooh, do go on Penny !

I was trying to explain italian pronunciation to my dc the other day and they looked at me like I was a weirdo...

Pennybubbly · 08/06/2011 07:50

Give me your list of words MrsD and I'll try and sit still (can't promise, maybe I'll have to pace) and try and give you the correct pronunciations.

And I also would like to SHOUT to anyone who cares to listen and is an offender that the word is pronounced as pronUnciation, not as pronoounciation.

(walks away grinding teeth with head held at funny angle in indignation)

mummaberry · 08/06/2011 22:48

It is "Mow ETTE" - Worked in the wine industry for a while and your SIL is wrong wrong wrong!

tinkertitonk · 08/06/2011 23:31

Getorf, I can answer your Cirencester question: it's pronounced "Serster".

By toffs like me anyway.

MardyBra · 08/06/2011 23:37

mummaberry Thank goodness you came along to sort it out after 200 odd posts.

tinkertitonk · 08/06/2011 23:44

Come to think of it, how do you pronounce Magners? Is it Mag-nerz or is Mahn-yerz? Or wot?

nickelbabe · 09/06/2011 11:13

the advert says Mag-nurhs

emmanana · 09/06/2011 11:23

But is Magners considered Chav fuel in Ireland, despite its attempts at uupmarket promotion here?

stleger · 09/06/2011 11:29

In Cork it is Mag ners, but we don't have chavs. (We have another abusive wordWink.

SuePurblybilt · 09/06/2011 11:48

Magners in Ireland IS Bulmers. The Bulmers factory in Clonmel (worked there so I know) provides what we call Magners in the UK. Something to do with the company splitting and the rights to the name in the UK being divided.
Magners in Ireland is different. Unless they've changed the Irish branding in the last three years and I don't think they can, our Magners, from Clonmel, is called Bulmers in Co.Tipp. So the chav fuel is a different product.
