The sad thing is, i really like persephone as a name but with my families, someone would be bound to call a DD named this Percy phone!

My sil has a DC who has the most outrageous name I (and anyone else I've mentioned it to) have ever heard. Its so outrageous that I can't put it in this post for fear of being outed. Suffice to say that we were at a family wedding which SIL and family couldn't attend. When their card was read out at the reception, with all names, 100 people burst out laughing and the lady next to me asked if that was the dog!!

No yanbu. I have an 'old' first name, I also have three middle names as well...I have close relatives called Algernon, Piers, and Tarquin. We all have more than one middle name. Oh dear.

I love reading the birth announcements column in The Times and always give a small cheer when another Maximillian is born. That and Mungo. Fabulous names that require a certain accent and bearing (neither of which I have - my name is more supermarket checkout girl )

Hairy - its not a classical name as such - think mad rock star affectation along the lines of Moon Unit Zappa and Zowie Bowie. What's worse is it is copied from a rock star's child.....so just the two of them on the planet !

A lot of the names on the baby names thread here I feel are pretentious and laughable, I think a lot of people forget its going to be a real human being living with the name for 70/80 odd years. Im never rude I dont reply and take the mick or anything but some of them.

Some people pretentious twits seem to think they are so out there with silly names like Monty and Mungo when, in fact, all the other pretentious twits people they know are also calling their kids the same names. They are clearly all reading the same, " How to be Middle Clarss " book.

I love Penelope. I know two and they are both Spanish, so not always a 'Posho Poshington-Jones' type name

The rest are vile, though, and yes, they are 'I am Mrs Posho-Poshington-Jones...or aspire to be' type names.

Why do some parents announce their DC's arrival in the Times with "at the Portland Hospital" though? This annoys me more than any naff name. Why does it matter where you gave birth, dripping in sweat and blood?

There was a thread somewhere that mentioned Boris Johnson's full name is Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson and the de Pfeffel part made a lot of potential names for pets. I can't think why he doesn't insist on being called his full name whenever anybody speaks to him. It's wonderful.

There was a mother at the local fete yesterday, whose child was called Wentworth.

I have met an Ozzy Merlin and know another child who was allowed to change his name to Buzz. Another that used to make my family laugh was Ruby Isabella (shortened to Rubella perhaps?)
